With enough effort and development time, where's the limit on how much power you can extract from an engine? On this episode, Mark Mazurowski of ‪@mazworxracingengines‬ is here to talk about his own experiences in doing just that with Nissan’s iconic 90s workhorse, the four-cylinder SR20.

Mazworx is a well-known name in the industry - particularly if you have an interest in imports, but prior to starting the company two decades ago, owner Mark Mazurowski was about as far from the Japanese performance scene as you could get - being way more interested in classic domestic muscle.
That all changed after enlisting in the US Marines, which eventually saw him posted to Japan, where he was exposed to the JDM sports car scene in what was inarguably its golden era of the mid-nineties. When the time came to leave, Mark was able to ship his personal S13 back to the States just in time to catch the explosion of US import culture. One mechanical engineering degree later, and Mark waded into the deep end by starting his own business.
In this episode, Mark talks about how Mazworx quickly became the go-to outfit for all things Nissan SR20, as well as the many business successes and failures he’s seen over the years and the lessons he’s learned along the way.
As we run Mazworx products on our own SR20VE-powered Toyota 86 endurance car, Andre couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pick Mark’s brain and extract plenty of hard-to-come-by SR knowledge. As you can imagine, this means the conversation goes way deep into Nissan’s best-known four-cylinder, and there’s a lot of wisdom to be found.
Mark also discusses his SR20 billet blocks, as well as his own drag car, which runs a 2000hp version of the billet motor and was once the world’s quickest and fastest four-cylinder. Times have moved on since, and the car is now sitting in seventh place… but there are plans afoot to take that record back by pushing boost way up to figures nearing 200psi, which should see somewhere north of an insane 3000hp using a compound turbo setup.
With some great insight into what makes a tuning shop actually profitable instead of perpetually treading water, as well as an interesting comparison between the SR20 and the new gold standard Honda K20, there’s a lot to chew on in this great episode of Tuned In with Mark Mazurowski of Mazworx.

I’m running a copper head gasket on my old Ford X-flow 1600. I machined 35thou grooves in the head, and installed piano wire, and the machined receiver gloves in the deck of the block. With an annealed copper head gasket, it bites in too the deck. Easily holds 11.5:1… it could hold 14:1 compression no problem.

I always wonder about these things why it's needed. My idi diesel runs 1:23 compression (stock) using normal headgasket and you can run 25 psi all day no issues.

Try out WPC treatment on the rockers. It's like micro shotpeening that impregnates some kind of proprietary moly magic. Mike Kojima from MotoIQ recommends it. Thanks for all the insight!

Oof! Too extreme. Best of luck with the valvetrain development! You'll have to design your own rockers and cams and spec the springs/retainers to suit the ramp profile? Y'all are going deep into the confusing maths. Guess that's why y'all set the records!!

Still waiting for folks to go "old school" to the days when the head and cylinder block was cast as one piece - modern machining techniques should make it reasonably simple to machine a billet head and block assembly, and the matching crankcase assembly it's bolted to. You can't blow a head gasket if there isn't one, and with a two(?) part crankcase there isn't such an issue with big-ends fitting down the bores and compromised webs..

Mark built my VQ37VHR. Engine has been great. I have had one learning curve on it and got a headgasket. I know all about being in unknown territory. We learn and move on. Just fixed a couple of my problems and I am just about completely back together. I am ready to enjoy the car again. When you get to 900-1000whp crap happens. Just the way it is.

I think Formula Drift driver Chris Forsberg went to VQ37 turbocharged engine instead of N/A VK56 for his 370z. He eventually went to VR38, because VQ37 block started to crack at 900whp mark.

@@vvevvevvvv That's not true. None of that data has been shared. It is unknown what the true story is. I have been at 900whp for a while. The block doesn't crack.

@@vvevvevvvv We shall see. I am on a standalone now with all the extra sensors needed. I fixed my high IAT'S and emap issues. VQ's don't like a high drive pressure ratio. It causes the block to dance around and you end up with a blown headgasket.

It would be interesting to try cryogenic treating the rockers. From my research it’s the one part of a motor that makes sense! 😎🤜🏼🤛🏼🇦🇺🍀 P.S. look on KZbin for drill bits that have been treated and how they last crazy longer.

No, it's pre-recorded. We haven't really thought about live-streaming the podcast at the time of recording, but I'm not sure the juice would be worth the squeeze. We sometimes have interruptions due to connection issues, our noisy neighbours (bike shop on one side, engineer the other) and once the guest even had to take a moment to answer their front door 😂 If you have a question and haven't already left a review for the podcast on a platform that allows you to leave a written one, that is an option for you though - Taz. (Apple and Podchaser (I think!) allow you to leave written reviews) - hpcdmy.co/reviewpodcast
