What’s the key to building and tuning a turbocharged engine for sustained top-speed runs? How do you catch a potential problem before it results in a blown motor? And what’s the secret to acquiring and maintaining a good reputation in the industry?
All these questions are answered in this, the 50th episode of the High Performance Academy Tuned In podcast with the legendary Jay Meagher of ‪@realstreetperformance‬.
-------------------------
Use ‘PODCAST75’ for $75 off your first HPA course here: hpcdmy.co/hpa-...
-------------------------
As far as reputations in the aftermarket performance industry go, Jay and his company, Real Street Performance, has one of the best. Podcast host Andre Simon gets Jay to break down his approach to tuning, engine building, parts supply, and customer relations to find out how this has been achieved.
Jay has been developing and tuning high-powered domestic and import engines for a good few years now, and has a lot of experience and advice to drop in this conversation when it comes to keeping big power setups reliable. Spoiler; there’s a lot to be said for building it right the first time, leaving a little power on the table when tuning, and being able to spot a problem before it causes a catastrophic failure.
Jay has spent much of his motorsport career at the dragstrip. In more recent years, though, has been starting to push the top speed limits at the famous Bonneville salt flats. This isn’t a topic we’ve ever discussed on Tuned In before, and there’s a lot of interesting insight in this episode when it comes to building motors that are built to run at sustained power and RPM levels for long periods of time.
Finishing off with a great discussion around the pros and cons of different dyno types and the pitfalls of jumping between them, this conversation is jammed with useful and interesting information in equal measure.

A big shout out to HPA for their milestone of reaching the 50th podcast. It was very interesting and informative, it helps me make wise considerations and decisions when it comes to both tuning and engine building. HPA has allowed me to expand my knowledge and I appreciate what you guys try to achieve with all the courses. Kind regards

Jay + Andre = Me feeling spoiled. 😘 What a way to have your 50th podcast HPA, bringing on the man who I consider is the 🐐 of JZ engines. It's why I went to Real St. myself for parts. Their billet main caps are just artwork, and they helped me get the turbos I wanted including finding the part number, even though they knew it would cost them personally a sale in the end. Best customer service going around. 🙏

This was a great podcast. Really enjoyed it. One of the best/most nerve wracking experiences of my engine building career was doing a 1 minute WOT run on the engine dyno with a VW 1.8T I built. It survived and I took it apart to see what it looked like- everything was fine and we went on to set the record in our class that year at Bonneville.

Motorsports, racing, high performance aftermarket, performance racing or whatever you want to call it is about 1% of the 99% of the industry. Because the world can survive without those. But those people that involve in that 1% are the passionate people that wants the "outside" world to see and be recognized. We are a niche market and proud to be part of that industry/world

Great information, I can wait to meet people likewise love building and tuning cars. I am almost done with my Military life and just looking If possible followed my passion. It’s hard to find a job that it’s not a job and hopefully I can make that dream happen. Now in Hp academy learning, enjoy and building knowledge. Next step is build that passion. Not about money but about the passion! Thanks Jay. Hopefully one day I can meet you or Andre.

For me, personal opinion. OE engine builders vs. high performance engine builders are two different knowledge, training, aspect and passion. No offense on the OE since i myself have work in that industry as my stepping stone to high performance, since it provided me with the basics knowledge and know how of an internal combustion engine. Fortunately for me i have a passion for high performance, and made me study more to know more. Cheers...

We agree! It's a shame you have to say that you don't mean offence in stating that fact either, some people take it the wrong way and I don't know why. One is not better or worse than the other outside of what interests people as individuals, they are just different 😎 Great that you are enjoying building on your existing skills too, you chose a great path that gives you some crossover to help with that too, absolutely 🤘 - Taz.

@@hpa101and to add to that. I know that OE techs go thru trainings and seminars which is, again, very different concept from the high performance. And with the advent of online training. Thanks of to HP Academy (and similar idea) along with SAM Tech. High performance, aftermarket, racing and motorsports have a proper way of gaining knowledge and experience plus a backbone way to back up some theories and tuning stories too.
