A great philosophy. I'm much the same....a maximum of 500 pounds per year.....so a 2k car has to last for at least 4 years....or more. However it always pays back as often I can sell the car on for more than I paid.

My best deals were a Rover 213 for £2 paid in coppers to make it look substantial...with only 20k on the clock and an old Volvo saloon with leather heated seats that only did 50 miles to a tenner in the early 2000s which i sadly lost the keys too and was scrapped, a sin but that one was free so i did my best not to fret... otherwise i was usually in the £50-£300 range, drive for a year or until it breaks and get another one... had some great cars of all sorts, Porsche 944 for £300 that no-one could fix, petrol issue, after a night of studying the wiring diagrams i found a small fuse box under the dash that had fuel pump fuse... bayonet type, originally ceramic but this one was plastic, so although it wasn't blown and easily discoverable, it had shrunk through heat so the contacts couldn't pass enough current to keep the fuel pump running... especially as they had another few fair draw items on the same fuse... bought a new fuse for £1 and drove it away... the owner had been trying for over a year to get it fixed and had enough... that one went out on black ice through a hedge which mashed the front end, fixable but got written off and payed out £1300, get in! luckily for me and the assessor there was a similar year model for sale at the end of my road on a forecourt at that price... so he got a crib and i got top end payout... been driving 50 years with usually a different car each year... never ever had a service... but i do fix stuff myself if needed, it's usually not so difficult, especially now we have KZbin demo vids... instead of deciphering a Haynes manual! Cars are fun, long live the car!

Adendum now had a Volvo V70 D5 for nearly 5 years... first time i ever put new tyres on anything! and swing arms, rear shocks, new discs and pads, couple of ABS sensors, rear wiper motor and blade... i even changed the oil twice and the fuel filter (didn't like veg oil) 5K to go to the 200K mark... i reckon i can get it to 300K at least... runs sweet with a touch of acetone in the fuel for extra zoom! seems to add 5 miles to the gallon too... best mileage was a week ago from Buxton to Malvern, 80.6mpg... never above 65mph ...average 54mpg mixed, keeping it!

You forgot to mention, that non of the Lamborghini will come even close to 280k miles (maybe all together, but not each separately) PLUS your car uses 5 times less fuel that each of them. Besides if you want to take a family of 5 for a trip to Europe with all their languages, you can take ONE Volvo, but they have to take all 4 Lambos, as there is no space for stuff that one usually take when they go for a long trip. That would make him to use 20 Times More Fuel than you and produce 20 more CO2. That suggest, that you should be allowed to go 20 times a year to Europe for holidays when he should be allowed only 1 time. Plus his lambo will probably break a few times in a short run. :)

I bought a couple of Volvo 850 saloons. This was back in the 2000's. With the diesel engine in. Paid £850 for one of them and £500 for the other. Did 80,000 miles in one of them and 120,000 miles in the other before they went to the scrap yard. They were good servants.

Ive done a few track days and found from a purely enjoyment perspective you're better in a less able car that you can master and flatters your driving, than a very fast car that is past your ability and makes you feel you cant master it.

Mark is a pretty competent race driver although not unbeatable as my brothers can attest when they used to race together in stoxkarts. He is however one of the most down to earth guys with a great sense of humour so I’m sure he will find this video funny. I feel a Geoff / McCann collaboration in the future.

I bet your 850 used less fuel to do its faster lap, so you can do more laps for the same amount of fuel and more laps equals more fun; therefore your 850 gives more fun than a Lamborghini.

Also the basis of endurance racing. Who can do most laps in 'x' minutes/hours. Fuel efficiency matters (as the electric challenges also demonstrate). Sadly most endurance racing nowadays has crappy regs that make the cars all have the same fuel range, notable exception being the Nurburgring NLS & 24hrs, where it plays a much more realistic part.

Aside from maybe Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, nobody was ever driven to school in, went on holiday in, learnt to drive in, or took out their first girlfriend/boyfriend in a Lamborghini. But a Volvo? Yes, yes, yes, and yes. So on that basis, an old Volvo has enriched the lives of more people than a Lamborghini, and therefore is a better car. In my mind anyway.
