Auction is like shooting craps - sometimes you win; sometimes you lose. A Freightliner is going to give you headaches. The Memphis Fire Department had Freightliner ambulances and after problems they went to Ford. The best advice in buying a truck- ask the mechanics.

Usually, the auctions will have a set day and time for you to go there to check out the item that you're planning to bid on. I used to go to Taylor Martin auctions and they would have the day prior to check out all of the different tractors and trailers.

Here in Alaska at the Ritchie Brothers auction i buy every year cast off equipment or inoperables, some are stupidly easy to repair and cheap, on such truck was a 2015 Peterbilt 579, mx13, 18 speed, disc brakes, mid roof sleeper, inoperable due to emissions disable. I bought it and another for $2,100 and $2,400. Currently the mid roof needed a new egr cooler and a pdf cleanout. Bought a new set of driver tires for it and its going to be my HDT rv hauler for my winter trips to Florida. The other will be our company truck. Nobody understands how to repair def systems up here, most just delete as there is no emissions testing up here, sometimes you can make out like a bandit at auctions.

Check the cab mounts on that KW, or replace them if that don't work put new seals in, if that don't work look for some thing that is putting the cab in one hell-va twist

It's like gambling....you win some ....& lose some. My experience with truck auctions goes back to my 1st truck bought at a T&M auction in Denver in '82. Bought a beautiful '78 KW W900.....that didn't hold up mechanically. Sold it a couple later for more than I paid for it....so it all worked out. Have bought & sold with T & M a number of times, with mostly good results, but you can't win 'em all. Last truck bought at USAuctioneers in the quad cities turned out to be the best truck I'd ever owned. Low mileage '05 T600 Studio, cat, 13 spd...comfortable & economical. I've never bought a truck at an online auction but I have bought one sight unseen. Big mistake. I'd have trouble buying anything I didn't inspect in person before the auction started.

Hi Justin like your vids and you have a nice fleet of trucks,we had the pillars crack so bad on an Australian long hood t650 that the drivers side top mirror arm came right off had to wire it up to the sunvisor. This truck used to do a lot of building site work so twisting all the time, ours broke top and bottom we fabricated 4 aluminum inserts and fiberglassed them in on the inside top and bottom both sides, it stiffened the cab up nicely, we have had others of the same model as well as t950s and haven't seen this problem come back as bad but some do show signs of fine spider cracking in the paint which could be the difference in drivers as some think the trucks articulate behind the cab like adt dump truck,cheers from aus.

Your KW has a cab integrity problem which is much larger than just the crack that you see on the A Pillar. If you investigate you may find that the drivers door is out of adjustment or some other problem with it. The front window mask must be repaired or replaced not a small job. Fixing the window mask is a job for some one that is a expert in Fiberglass repairs. I would look at cab reinforcements in the A pillars left and right side after the repair is compleat. In my part of the world this is a out of severs under the NSC tag and tow on a roadside. We see this of problems in logging trucks and trucks that have a lots of off road work. Good luck.

Just like anything it's a hit or it's a miss. Bought my T800 from RB 4 yrs ago and got 100k miles out of her before I had to do open heart surgery and replace a crack radiator. I was really surprised it went that long. But now she's better then this new emissions crap...

You want a truck with the same brand engine that you are running in the rest of your fleet. All of your fleet needs to have same brand engines, transmissions, carriers, etc. It is cheaper to run a fleet with same brands because of familiarity to your techs, like filters, regular maintenance schedule, and other redundancy. It’s all about components and brand of truck is secondary as long as the truck brand dealership is close. I was a parts manager for a Mack/Volvo dealership for 40 years so I am very familiar with the industry and all brands of the trucking industry.

How old of trucks do you run I have a 1988 Pete 379 with a B model Cat and a 1986 R Model semi both are great trucks but we like to stay with all mechanical engines and I do the work on them and I’m a fan of old trucks not the new plastic trucks.

The risk of buying second hand trucks is that your potentially buying someone else's problems 🤔. Thats why my boss never buys second hand trucks , always brand new and bought outright as well ..

New trucks are problematic as well, emission problems are costly. Not really a yard mechanic friendly trucks to work on from all the sensors and wiring. Where as the quality and reliability of a old CAT or Detroit engine is something a child could fix, less hassle, and overall better built.

I know what you mean when you say"pre emission". But what you're really saying is "pre DPF". For those who don't know; an actual pre emission truck is 2002 and older. EGR started showing up in 2003. EGR IS an emission truck.
