If I'm not mistaken Darkthrone used this pedal with a DS-1 recording Soulside Journey.

The HM-2 was indeed used by second-wave Black Metal bands so I'm not surprised that it's able to pull off the raw Norwegian second wave Black Metal tones pretty easily. However, the most common distortion pedal used by most Black Metal bands back in those days was the Pro Co RAT. Pretty much every Black Metal guitarist used to have a Pro Co RAT on their pedalboard. It was more common in pawnshops than the Boss HM-2 so most guitarists back then used to go for it. Among Melodic Black Metal bands, the Boss Metal Zone was a staple pedal. However, it was used only as a boost, its distortion knob was kept at zero. The weirdest pedal was undeniably used by Quorthon. He used one of those old Rotosound Fuzz pedals on the early Bathory albums. That vicious, fuzzy and sizzling distortion you hear on early Bathory albums was due to that Rotosound Fuzz.

I use a ProCo Rat for a lot of Hardcore influenced music, and the ProCo RAt does a really good job at making any amplifier sound really thick without it sounding flubby and overbearing on the low end. It still manages to keep everything really tight and together in a way that you don’t get from something like a Tube Screamer or a Boss SD-1 The ProCo RAT is a truly underrated boost pedal and they sound really good in front of solid state amplifiers.

The best black metal tone is a Boss DS-2 in Turbo mode into a Marshall JCM800 or JCM800 with a hot bridge pickup like an EMG 81, DiMarzio Evolution or a Duncan Distortion..

Nothing on this earth makes my ears ring louder than an HM2. The HM2 takes a lot of studio magic to really sound good in my opinion. I love it, but the HM2 clones do it better because they allow the user to dial back the highs a little bit. Sold my MIJ HM2 to buy a clone and I'm happy I did.
