I would chose the. Hm2 for curving the low end and high filter of the amp

“Make sure the amp’s main distortion gain channel is ideal.” Exactly. The pedals should be there, largely, to modify or augment that baseline tone. That said, boosts and even distortion pedals (if dialled a certain way), can help articulate very thick and large low end frequency gains in certain amps. This tends to be the challenge with Dual and Triple Rectifiers where there’s just a whole lot to work with tonally and in terms of gain, and some of it could require tightening. Largely, if one has a good amp with a solid high gain and voicing, any decent tube screamer style boost will get the job done if one wants more.

The MAXON ST9 is an all around go to pedal and life saver on the road. The boss DS-1 sucks, it's main use was as a base for a specialty heavily modded pedal and is the only known configuration i have heard it used professionally by metal band on an album. The BOSS 'SD-1" however is a unique boost pedal. Even with as great an amplifier as the ENGL, the boss SD-1 is great to add to the sound because of it's asymmetrical clipping diodes that create an extra cut or a detail in the sound somewhere where it is dialed in at to affect.

I stopped using pedals. Inmostly use garageband and headphones lately, cause i have some kinda neighbours you can‘t imagine. But i have a DS-1 in my shelve, i‘ll give it a try again. Maybe crank it up and hear what happens. The cheap boost sounds nice. I was thinking of buying a boss metal thingy pedal too.

The BOSS S D 1 is the one to try. It is more metal than a tube screamer and is on countless albums as also the tube screamer. The Ds1 is a collector piece that had some use in a modified form in some specialty metal albums.

@@DevGohil Thanks for the quick reply. Rewatching your guide to black metal. I bought a keyboard the other day and started learning music theory on piano. It makes more sense now and I can understand your theory lessons better. Its weird but I found it easier to learn about major and minor scales on piano then translate it to guitar.

I hardly use any pedals. I don't think they're the best use of your money. They can rob your tone as much as they add to it. An EQ and an overdrive pedal can be useful for BM but you shouldn't even need that really if your setup is good. Not to say there's anything wrong with using them though, I just don't care for them that much from my own experience. My pedalboard is just a tuner, a delay, a distortion/fuzz and a noise gate.
@DevGohil

@Κύριλλος I just use my amp's onboard digital reverb. Personally I only want moderate, natural sounding reverb which that provides perfectly well. I've got nothing against reverb pedals though. There are a lot of good ones.
