I like investing in close-end funds that pay monthly dividends. The trick is to hold long term and reinvest the monthly dividends plus buy more shares on a monthly basis or whenever you can afford to. This can be easily done because close-end funds are bought and sold on the stock market just like regular stock. That'd be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between $50k to $70k in dividend income

51 years old. I have $295,588.25 in my Fidelity retirement account. I cranked my contributions up to 35% and I do all the investing on my own. Fidelity just holds my ETFs/stocks. I made that change earlier this year. I'm hoping to end the rat race by 60 but it's looking more like 63-ish. I want to have $1.5M and bring in about $60k in dividends each year. Pedal to the floor! Bottom line. When deciding between a long-term CD or putting money in the stock market, always take into account your goals and how long you'll need to achieve them. For long-term plans like retirement, the market offers better returns than locking up your cash in a CD.

There are MYGAs (Multi Year Guaranteed Annuities) that are paying 6% guaranteed for 10 years. Keep in mind the primary advantages over CDs: 1. These are compounding daily. THIS IS HUGE. 2. You are able to withdraw your accumulated interest (6%) on an annual basis. These are huge advantages in growth & flexibility over CDs. If 10 years is too long, there are 3 year MYGAs offering the same rate.

The S&P 500 averages in the range of 10% annually. The problem is that it doesn’t average 10% every year. It may be down 10% one year….then be up 25% the following year. If you don’t need the money until quite a ways in the future, it’s not a real big issue. If you are going to need the money in the short term though, and you have to withdrawal while it is down…you just lost money. It doesn’t make sense to lock money into a CD if you know for certain you aren’t going to need the money in the short term, as you’re likely to beat the returns elsewhere over the long term.

$250K in a CD is a goal of mine. It will provide about $1K per month and coupled with my projected minimum SS check of take home $1,600 will be more than enough to live on in South America. We take comfort in knowing that regardless of what the stock market gambling machine does, or what the idiot bureaucrats do, we will never out live our money, even if rates drop and we're only earning 2-3%. Hell, we'll be fine if it goes to zero. It just means our daughter may get a little less when we pass. As a result, we do what we want, we own what we need or want, and we sleep well at night.
