A global investigation has revealed how Chinese company Zhenhua has been mining big data from at least 24 lakh people living across democracies, 10,000 of them in India. In episode 567 of Cut The Clutter, Shekhar Gupta explains how this was done, caught & examines if it is spying or 5th Generation Warfare (5GW).

@Chirag Patel The same applies to India. We are way too good at many but way too stupid at so many. We complain about jobs and when someone tries to open a factory in our vicinity we sit on stupid dharnas. Of course, the environment is important but many of these protests are seldom linked to the environment.

Dear SG, the last story on the Hindi language actually got me so nostalgic. I remember, as a kid whenever we would go to Jorhat from Duliajan by road, we would listen to the radio during our journeys. Many times, the radio would catch the frequency coming in from China. I was genuinely surprised by the clarity with which the Chinese newsreaders were reading out news in Hindi. Coincidentally, today, i.e., 14 September is celebrated as Hindi Diwas. I guess this was part of some diplomatic relations as language and films are soft power tactics. My parents said that this was nothing new. The radio signal was the strongest whenever we crossed the AIR station in Dibrugarh. I am writing this intentionally so that readers here can visualise the India-China map! :) Also, nearby Arunachal Pradesh has some of the highest Hindi speakers (the tribal population speaks very good Hindi unlike the other North-Eastern states) in NE India and it is directly bordering China.

Shekhar sir, I am a fan of your journalism and got the opportunity to meet you briefly at IIT Guwahati. You need to understand the pattern of UPSC and the kind of questions their syllabus and question types mostly promote 'rote learning' (for prelims) and the kind of answers they want (for mains), aspirants are trained by institutes or on various other channels on KZbin. Please don't think about how it could be useful to UPSC aspirants. Your analysis and journalism is way more valuable to other kind of audiences. On the fact part, Babur had cannons which were relatively new at that time, Lodhi didn't have that technology, it wasn't the battle between armies of similar technology. Plus, some research says, kings of Bahamani Kingdom in South India also had muskets, that's before Babur came (there is an influential research paper of 1981 on this). But yeah, full fledged use of muskats came later.

Sir, as a recent subscriber, thank you for all your insightful analyses. I fully agree with your final statement. Exactly because of their differences, Indians needs to learn more, not less, about China and Chinese culture. Similarly, the Chinese need to learn more, not less, about India and Indian culture. Only then can both sides start to understand and appreciate each other. With understanding comes trust, with trust comes peace, and with peace comes friendship. As someone active on both English and Chinese social media and who has close friends from both countries, it is disheartening to read the amount of suspicion/scorn/misunderstandings that nationalists/chauvinists in both countries have for each other. India and China are two great cradles of Asian civilization, each filled with many millennia of wisdom and philosophy and arts and culture. They should see each other not as competitors, but as sources of mutual learning and cooperation. In fact, I believe with more chances to interact harmoniously, the two peoples will find that they have much more in common than differences. That, at least, is my (naive?) wish for the 3 billion Indians and Chinese in the world. Peace to everyone.

The Chinese definitely want more people learning mandarin. I can say this because there is Chinese language center in my college where Chinese government sponsors people who learn Chinese. They even have Chinese speaking teachers from China for good learning experience. As SG says I hope more people are encouraged to learn more about Chinese culture and mindset. I'm afraid the opposite might happen.

Frankly, this shouldn't surprise UPSC aspirants. And not just China. It would be disappointing if India were not doing this already, and not just with China.

Why the Chinese trying so hard??? If they just want to know which group is Anti-India, they just have to check the comment section of The Print Facebook page. And they will get a clear cut idea.

In the games like"Mobile Legends" and "PUBG" which has Chinese origin, the game has a feature to submit your locality data (city name, village name, district name etc.) so that players can see what is their ranking in their own local area and also their ranking in their own state. But if you think in terms of where dose these all data goes? You will find it all goes back to china.

In reality for most of the common citizens, it doesn't concern. Google, FB, and all social media and all cookies do it all the time. Data itself is going to be the biggest threat and there is nothing called a perfect encryption.

9:29 shekharji the primary reason for all this ruckus around huawei and 5g was centred around the possibility of disclosure of private information of citizens by chinese MNC to the CCP. Policymakers have taken note of these chinese legislations but creating popular public opinion against china was difficult until the current pandemic...

Very interesting! However my question is, did we get to know about the rule which the Chinese passed regarding the use of data from their companies just now? Or was this ignored? Does these kind of rules exist in any democratic country? Also Shekar sir, we would like to hear these kind of experiences 😊
