As someone who’s been in tech since 1999 fresh out of high school, I would advise anyone coming in to GET A DEGREE. Tech has become saturated in recent years, any edge that can get you an interview do it! Also, having a degree will get you past the ATS filter. Choose a good program from a State school with cheap tuition. Just get the degree! Bootcamps are dead in 2024 and most were a scam anyway.

As someone who is starting a CS degree I'm biting my fingers as I watch this 😅 but I'm going into AI and ML so need more research based experience tbh. Now you don't need a degree but having one os better than not cause so many people know basic coding but never understand what they are actually doing. There is a high amount of programmers but low amount of high quality devs. The issue is CS is not software engineering that's what people need to learn.

CS degree is outdated it one of the reason Big Tech company have been making free course's. So many graduate are not qualify for the jobs they want cause of how scatter shot CS is. but College still has value most important thing to do is network and apply internships when they come up.

For ml/ai type of jobs , even the entry level jobs require a masters at the minimum. Stay strong

This is outdated advice. Going the “self-taught” route or Bootcamp route sounds good until it’s time to apply for jobs and you realize you’re automatically getting filtered out. Most companies have CS degree requirements, either implicit or explicit. You’re referring to a time pre-2021. Bootcamp’s are virtually dead in 2024. As the market saturation increases, the barrier to entry will also rise. The best advice is to get a CS degree if you can. The next best advice is to self-study, but with that you’re almost always going to have to have some internal connection or have built some substantial software with active users.

CS degrees also offer flexibility. Like you said, technology evolves rapidly. Fundamentals are anchors. You’ll be able to pivot to different roles much easier than someone who solely learned web dev for example. As AI advances, being able to pivot will be crucial.

Highly disagree with the "Most companies have CS degree requirements". Most companies now want competent engineers and you do not need a degree to become competent.
@AD-wg8ik

@@CodeSimplicity I agree companies do want competent engineers, but at a personal level. The problem is the initial stages of the hiring process are often automated and impersonal. The applicant pool has become extremely oversaturated in recent years, so companies have started using CS degrees as a filter to ease the hiring process. It's a numbers game, and hiring managers are more likely to find competent engineers in a stack of CS degree holders, than non-CS degree holders, even though they're likely filtering out quality candidates. This is why networking is stressed when you don't hold a degree, because sure you can be more talented than the CS graduate, but if you can't get pass some ATS filter, then you're essentially a tree falling in the forest with nobody around to hear it.

@@CodeSimplicitySo when a hiring a manager looks at two applicants with comparable skill but one with a degree and one without which one are they likely to choose? A degree can only benefit you. Cs is the only field I've seen this dogma against. But no one talks shit about math or physics degrees who are also able to get jobs in cs. But going for cs to get a job in cs is somehow stupid. It's baffling.

Im a freshman doing a CS degree, and I'm currently in the 'hardest' coding class (in C) at my university. (For context, I've been coding since 10th grade in highschool) It's crazy to me that people can complete a 4 year degree without learning how to use github and other tools that are so important as a programmer. In class we are supposed to ssh into VM's to run our code and are discouraged to code locally. It's also crazy that students are completing CS degrees without writing a single line of code on their on device, and even using a web version of vscode. I honestly don't know if I will continue for 4 years since all my programming knowledge has come from my own personal learning. I might think about a more engineering type degree but I really want to do something coding related for a job, and CS feels like a waste since I'm so ahead of the game.

You can build a portfolio and start applying for jobs as if you were a self-taught developer. This will probably open your eyes to the importance of getting a degree in today's job market if this is what you really want to do.

@@boomkablamo yeah i applied to probably 15-ish summer internships (probably applied a bit late), still waiting to hear back from most (if they don't just ghost me), but I did get rejected from 2 or 3 already without even offering an interview. And my resume and GPA are very good, I have a lot of seriously impressive personal projects. Kinda sad cuz the people reviewing your resume probably don't understand code.

I feel that recommending the self-taught route as viable is outdated and out of touch advice in the curent job market. Doesn't matter how skilled you are or how amazing your portfolio is because without a CS degree or prior experience no one is even going to look at it right now. Sure there are still people out there achieving it but they are statistical anomalies. This is coming from someone who self-taught for 2.5 years before giving in and pursuing a CS degree. I never got a single call for an interview.

Do you think that the math is hard. I am quite awfull at math so i dont knkw if i should get a CS degree
@adityaanand.

Math isn't hard it's all about practicing and yes you need some mathematical knowledge to be good at Data Structures and Algorithms and yes if you are willing to work hard then only do a CS degree else you will be no better than an arts graduate.

Your advice if you can get one and go the community college route so as not to end up with significant debt is a good option. I am a self-taught developer who started at 36 and got my first job at 39. Now I am 43. I am constantly plagued with imposter syndrome and the accessive need to keep studying. I am looking to continue my growth by enrolling in a community college part-time. I still feel a degree is used as a form of gatekeeping in jobs, but not all. Lol. This is my trolling account. But your content is pretty dope if you want to do a colab to chat about state of web dev I would be down for it. @codingafterthirty @@CodeSimplicity

In my opinion it's a big fat no. Besides the networking and social experience, it's just a huge rip off. Much better value for your money in those coding bootcamps. I was self taught before college so I kept waiting for the day I would learn something new and that never happened.
@rl1271

the problem with bootcamps now is that any idiot can go to one and pass. The job market is flooded with CS type people so naturally bootcampers arent viewed the same as CS majors.
