Is a KETO/LCHF Diet Safe for Kids (One Doctors Opinion)

Is Keto/LCHF safe for kids to eat? This question is often asked and regularly worries parents. We want our children to eat a healthy, nutritionally complete diet, and to avoid anything that could be bad for them.
Have the diets recommended by the AMA, AAP, AHA, ADA been proven to be the best diet for your child with Randomized Controlled Trials? No. What about the Standard American Diet? NO. These diets are basically a gigantic (and some people would say evil) dietary experiment, with your child as the Guinea Pig.
Much better would be to provide your child with a whole-food ketogenic diet, with as many organic and grass-fed foods as you can afford. Think about the common sense of this, consider the ancestral evidence we have, and stay current on the coming research showing that the ketogenic way of eating is the best option for your child.

My daughter has been low carb for over a year. We started her in April 2017 and it has been the best thing that has happened to her. She was overweight from the age of 2 and all the pediatricians wanted me to do LOW FAT, so that is exactly what I did and she did nothing but gain weight for many many years. I hate that it took me so long to find out about low carb HIGH FAT. Not only did her weight come down to a normal level, she has so much more energy, and wants to go out and do activities instead of sitting in front of the tv and napping all the time. I've never seen her so happy. She now makes her own choices when it comes to eating and chooses to stay under 50 carbs a day because she loves the food options that LCHF offers and she loves the energy that comes from eating this way. She now packs her own mug cakes, or Quest bars when going to parties and outings when we know there isn't options. This has been the best decision we have ever made for our family.

And before anyone jumps on the "did you do your research beforehand?" bandwagon.. yes. I have been keto for 21 months and lost 146 pounds. I did my research. When your child is having to wear clothes TWICE the size they are supposed to be in, it will make you stop and think that the diet that was told to you by the pediatrician or local nutritionist office may not be the correct one. Nothing like having to buy plus size clothing and having to have someone hem the pants because they are too long. I don't think LCHF or Keto is for all children, but if they are obese, overweight or if their entire diet comes from processed foods then yes.. I think it is time for a change.

Good for you, mom or dad, for bucking the trend and doing what's right for your daughter. The great thing is that probably her self esteem shot through the roof and for the rest of her life, she'll be a healthy person. That's the best thing you could have given her. Good job!

AWESOME VIDEO!!! My husband has orderd me not to put my 14 year old on keto...says I'm gonna ruin his health! I've introduced my 28 and 29 year olds with keto and they are loving it so it's not my first rodeo! Got my 15 year old on it (still) and just telling my husband we are counting carbs...(which is the truth!) He absolutly love it especially the low carb versions of his favorite foods! He has aspergers so he doesn't like change but he loves this one! He's very proud of the baby fat he's losing and he has better confidence swimming without a shirt! It's fun doing keto with him! This is my problem. I have been eating low carb for 20 years my husband and daughter have not. My husband developed diabetes and went on a diabetic diet this year and has lost 80lbs. My daughter is 12 and has been diagnosed with early stage fatty liver disease and high blood pressure. Her Pediatrician recently said no to a Ketogenic diet and wants her to do Paleo, that will make me trying to incorporate 3 different eating styles at dinner, it is difficult at best. I would like for her to eat Ketogenic and maybe we can get Dad on board later.

+angel12824 other than sugar are there not a lot of similarities between LCHF and paleo, oh they say no dairy, use coconut oil, avocado etc, or just limit dairy intake. Trail her on keto, or make it low carb by allowing an extra bit of higher carb veggie like carrots or something, just say you are going whole food to dr, if not working after a month or so reassess

My primary care physician is the one who advised me to eat "low carb", and I have a serious cardiovascular condition. After a few months eating this way, my triglycerides went down and I lost 18 pounds. I have also had the experience of 'cheating' on the diet at a birthday party and family gathering, and I truly did feel the difference the next few days. How can anyone think that to have a child eat wholesome "real" food, and giving up junk foods, could be harmful? It's the parents who give their children sugar laden cereals, high carb junk snacks, and very few vegetables and wholesome protein, who should be considered harming them!

I want to say how much I appreciate you breaking these topics in to logical common sense terms that anybody can understand. I’ve been overweight my entire life, flat out obese. I’ve always moved more and worked harder than anyone I know, trying to lose the weight. I’ve done low fat, low calorie my entire life. No success. I finally found the answer with lchf. I’ve toyed with low carb for years now but never knew the high fat part or I was so conditioned to the low fat propaganda that I missed it. After seeing a few of your videos, it just clicked. Made all the sense in the world. My husband and I cleaned all carbs from our kitchen and pantry 7 weeks ago. We decided to do a summertime experiment, when I knew our boys had no option but to eat what we have in the house. My two boys, 13 & 14 liked to have had a conniption at first and begged to go to Grandma’s house! I’m proud to report that they have finally come around and are now making keto recipes and even inventing their own recipes! My 14 year old has my sensitivity to insulin and has been overweight since he was 4-5. It has been heartbreaking to see him go through the same things I had to. We have all slimmed down and are going keto strong. I appreciate your discussion of these topics, knowing the science behind it makes it impossible for me to ever turn back. I look forward to our new, brighter future and thank you so much for helping make that possible.

My daughter was a high school athlete when we started eating low carb everyone was saying she needed carbs before her basketball games. Let me just say by the end of high school my daughter lost weight and was faster on the court and started additional exercise because she had more energy. After first year of college she has continued to eat low carb and the freshman 15 has stayed away from her. She looks and feels amazing!

My daughter had epilepsy when she was 4 yrs old. She was taking around 120 seizures a day at her worst. She was on meds that either had her like a zombie or had her up at 2am doing somersaults on the sofa. An older neurologist, Dr. Waters said we could try the Keto Diet for 2 years. After 6 weeks her seizures were cut in half and after 2 months her seizures stopped all together and then we weaned her off of all meds she was on. This diet was truly a miracle for us and probably her last chance to lead a normal life. Fast forward 23 yrs, she’s a teacher, married and 3 months pregnant with her first baby on it’s way. The Keto Diet literally saved her life and she’s never had a seizure since. The power of eating right should be everyone’s medicine. Thank you for all your great vids. Cheers !

Me too! I had PCOS from 11, but doctors didn’t k ow that’s what it was because I don’t “look” like I have PCOS (Thanks Docs). Went to a naturopath, she identified it right away, got diagnosed by my doc after much insisting that he check me for it. Finally, an answer to persistent weight gain with “healthy” eating. The naturopath gave me natural testosterone depleting pills which reset my hormones. I gradually became healthier and healthier, eating less high-insulin-producing food as I learned more. BAM. Enter Keto and I am so excited to be healthier than ever as the weight melts off :)

Indeed! I wish more doctors were like Dr. Berry or even my PCP. When my doctor put me on insulin for my Type II Diabetes, I did not initially take charge of my diet. Two weeks in I realized that even with the insulin my numbers were still around 350ish, so I started to cut high sugar items from my diet and limited my carb intake to no more than 40g per meal. However, even then my numbers remained around 200. It was not until I went back to the doctor two and a half weeks ago and he decided to start increasing my insulin by 3 units every three days and have me text him my numbers every day until we found the right balance that I finally decided I needed to restrict the carb intake further and began to look into more low-carb alternatives. That was when I found Keto. My doctor was so surprised at how quickly my glucose levels dropped into the normal range when I started this diet that he jokingly said he needed to hire me as a diabetic consultant and has repeatedly said that I should be a nutritionist, lol. I had worried that he would balk like so many doctors tend to do the moment I mentioned Keto, but he's been surprisingly open after seeing the results I've had. I've been keeping the weight loss a surprise until I see him for my one-month follow-up in nearly two weeks though. I'm hoping when he sees that he might even consider going Keto himself, lol. Now if only my husband's Cardiologist was so open... Unfortunately, he is someone that pushes Veganism so he hates the very idea of Keto. Apparently, it's okay for my husband to be taking 13 different pills that make him feel terrible and only superficially control the blood pressure and cholesterol, but eating meat will kill him... :/

I think because while nurses get some info about a good diet helping healing, the nutritional information of what is a good diet comes from dietary associations and currently recommended grains at base, this means it’s harder to feel safe recommending alternatives as it may be seen as outside of scope of practice, if not current advice re same. And changing an unwell persons diet against current standards if you don’t fully understand the science, may get you in trouble, so they keep quiet as they are not sure. There are medical doctors who are experts in field being taken to task by medical associations or boards in their countries so it’s a difficult line to tow

I agree with this. my children’s pediatrician have told me for the passed decade that children do NOT need sugar! I even got my him to sign a paper for me for Headstart. When I enrolled my daughter to Headstart, they wanted to give her juice during snack and lunch time. I refused! The director assured me that juice was part of her nutrition (which for a fact I knew was lies). So I went back for my baby’s check up and he gave me a written consent to not give her any type of juice. Instead to replace juice with natural fruits. I do not regret this at all!

Thank you for this video! I felt somewhat conflicted with what I've learned about keto being on it off and on for the last 2 years, and what mainstream info sources tell me to feed my almost 1 year old. I don't want to be too restrictive, causing her to have a bad relationship with food, so I don't freak out when grandma feeds her store bought baby snacks from time to time. I basically just feed her whatever my husband and I are eating, with a bit more fruit. We've been lectured that iron supplementation is important from 6-12 months and the best way to get it is fortified baby rice cereal. I hate giving her straight simple carbs like that, but our doctor says the alternative, iron drops are worse, causing teeth discoloration and constipation. So we mix the cereal with eggs and make pancakes, just feeding her the minimum recommended amount. I hope we're setting her up to become a healthy adult.... it's scary out there!!

I love the very last part where you talk about what to tell your child’s pediatrician and what to call the child’s diet to the pediatrician. My own doctor diagnosed me with diabetes type two and then told me not to “go crazy“ with “weird diets”. So I did my own research and realized that the diet he was recommending was not going to reverse my diabetes. After two weeks on the keto diet, I had lost 18 pounds. When I next saw him, my doctor was stunned and asked me what I was doing. I replied, “I eat healthy meats and only eat vegetables that grow above the ground.“ He thought that was fantastic, and clearly did not realize that I was eating Keto. You can probably guess what happened when he tried to put me on a statin because of my age (58 years old).

Something I hear when trying to explain to other people about Keto is " you can't survive without grains!! They are an essential component to a humans diet. People have to have grains! You're going to make your family sick if you don't eat grains." I just say that's not true, the nutrients from grain can be replace with other, more nutritious food. What do you say to these people? I have 8 kids and people think I am crazy for putting my whole family on this diet, especially since not all of us need to lose weight. I try to explain that it isn't a "diet" like the term is used for, and that it's a healthier way of eating.

I wouldn't respond at all. How you feed your kids isn't their business. You're doing what's right for your kids' health and that's more important than what they think. My mom was a health nut when I was growing up, despite whole wheat bread being considered healthy, but my friends made fun of the way we ate. We were poor and she chose to use our money for healthy food for us. As an adult, I'm ever so grateful for her foresight. It set me on the almost right path to eating healthy (I deviated once I was on my own), that now I really am fully on the right health path. So don't listen to others, because this isn't a short term plan. This is for your kids' futures. Unless they're paying the grocery bill, they can stay out of your business.

02:12 - It depends on where they were living. Some where in nowadays Russia (most whites) and others in the Mediterranean area, Central Asia and of course in Africa. Each had a different diet (with an overlap and of course an absence of the Popular Diet of the last 80 years) The genes had a lot of time to adjust to their diet and environment (look at piment and eye color). Genes need a lot of time to adapt to everything (diet, environmental changes, vit D etc). You already hint to that but maybe a bit of extra attention to this wouldn't hurt... In fact the opposite might hurt some. Thanks for the time you spent maintaining this great channel. Keep up the good work!

This was so helpful. I've been obese since I was 13 and I have an obese 8 year old. My 9 year old is average size but I still worry about her health as well. I've recently lost 60 lbs just eating less and exercising but my weightloss has stalled for the past 3 months. I've heard so much about keto and I think this may be the answer to kickstart my weightloss again and I wanted to make sure it was safe and healthy for my girls as well. I think this will help my 8 year old get to a more healthy weight!

Thank you for the information. I have been thinking about instinctive foods, or we usually say natural food for my 2yo (all is natural except from processed.... anyway). Of course I want her to have a good relationship with food, avoid cravings and support the growth. In our family, we believe our baby should be eating what grown ups are eating (kids menu? what?) and that's how I thought about keto way of eating for a toddler. First thought: what if their metabolism burns too much fat and they become too skinny oh dear... I am pretty sure I hear my grandparents voice in that fear. And here is what I observed. I serve her a piece of ham and a bowl of cereal. Guess what she eats first: the ham. I put butter on the bread and guess what: she licks the butter off and leaves the bread. Well, who could possible be closer to instinctive eating, me or my toddler? :-)

I was Keto when I got pregnant, then went off the rails and ate junk all the way into the 9th month of babies life. Primarily breastfeeding, but giving her bites of whatever ice cream, or junk food I was eating. Also, with teething I started giving her grain based teething crackers. Suddenly I came to my senses and went back to Keto and I'm SO glad I did! I've lost over ten pounds in three weeks, feel great and we're all thriving. So, no more crackers or french fries for my baby (she loves to teethe on pork rinds!) and she lives on breastmilk, meat, pureed veggies and fruits. However, she is having trouble with constipation, and she seems to crave salt. I know the orthodox message is never to add salt to babies food; to give her more fibre, and maybe give a chemical laxative like Miralax (which seems to be possibly a neurotoxin!) to deal with constipation. I know that for me, I need to up my salt intake while eating this way, do you think its okay to begin salting her food with some high quality salt? Would this perhaps help the constipation issue? Or is adding salt truly dangerous for babies? She's 11 months old. Thanks!

Guess this means I’ve acclimated to keto way of life. Wish I was losing more weight. 1 lb per week consistently. I guess the weeks are going to keep going on by, so I’ll take the one lb at a time. This is a remarkably easy way to eat. It’s 3 months now!

Thank you for this video. There seems to be so little info out there regarding keto for kids. I've started my 12 year old son on keto. He has autism, ADHD and hyperlexia and I wanted to get him off the abundance of pharmaceuticals he consumes daily. I have noticed a difference in his stimming behaviors and his focus, but he's losing weight too. My son is not overweight and weight loss is not my intention for him (though I am following the same way of eating for weight loss for myself). He's so picky when it comes to food and I'm afraid he's not eating enough. I'm hoping to learn more about how to make sure he's getting what his growing body needs.

I just started on 4/2/20 - Weight 276 and 23 days later I am down to 255 = 21 lbs. Many of my aches and chronic pains are gone (6days). Zero sugars, carbohydrates, 0 sodas or sugars and fruit drinks. More energy and I stopped taking a nap. Watching TV is hard with all the food commercial's. Getting the portions downsized is my biggest concern. I only eat 1/2 the amt. I use to and sometimes less. My feeling of being full lasts so much longer. My longest fasting was 25 hr.'s - so far-. My treat is a piece of bacon and I just plop it in my mouth and nurse of it for over 15 minutes. I drink apple cyder vinegar w/ pure lemon juice & water. The vinegar is hard for me to drink so I empty that 16oz class all at once - I then rinse my mouth because I dislike ACV. Besides the weight loss - I have reduced the bathroom visits and I am saving T Paper. I am looking to my healthy future!!!

Trying to act responsibly and preparing low karb food was part of the reasons and the judge didn't understand ether. It is very difficult to to do like other don't do. i just want to pount this out. I've been making keto friendly meals for myself and the kids since I started, and they love all of the food I've cooked. They still want the Spaghettio's and Mac and Cheese, but not nearly as much as before I started the keto WOE. My youngest is 11 and a super picky eater, so when she loves something, I know I've done a good job with a dish. As soon as I learn how to make a decent pasta that is low carb, I think they will be ready to be entirely keto :) I have replaced regular sugar with Truvia for the sweets, but I find that other than my 2 packs a day in my coffee, I don't crave it like I used to. And they like to use it too, so sugar is on its way out of the house as well! Now if I could get my husband on board....

I prefer to call it not ketogenic diet/way of eating, but KETOGENIC LIFESTYLE! Because not only it changes the eating patterns, it alters your life: you become calm, not dependent on food, your brain works superbly, thus you can be much more productive. Also endurance increases, your G.I problems pass away, skin becomes clear and hormones balance out and much more. It does put your body to homeostasis if it's done right. Imagine how all these alterations can change your life!

If you persist it will go away pretty quickly. Also make sure you are getting enough electrolytes and keeping hydrated. And make sure you are not under eating. My hubby used to get anxiety and the shakes when his blood sugars were low and used to have to eat every few hours. Now on lchf diet he is burning fat easily and never gets anxiety or the shakes and only eats twice a day. It took a couple of weeks for him to adapt.

Thank you. My anxiety did not appear until I was Keto for about 2 weeks. It just got worse and worse. I could not sleep. I felt awful. It would be really hard to persist through that... particularly NOT knowing if it would go away. I might, at some point, try again. :)

Yolanda aah yes, everyone is different. It does seem quite normal to not sleep well around about the time you become fat adapted. Your body has switched from being fueled on sugar to being fueled on fat. It can be a bit disconcerting but it does settle and in fact many people say they then sleep better or at least deeper and wake up more refreshed with much more energy than when eating high carb/sugar diets. If you do want to try again maybe research the things that are of concern to you before hand, Dr Berry has made wonderful vids on most info needed about Keto way of eating.. Cheers

This subject came up in a group and a bunch of people who follow the Keto WOE, started in with, "Oh you should consult your pediatrician!" I answered, since most pediatricians have 6 hours to maybe 15 hours of nutrition and are not really qualified to answer the question, that may not be a good idea. I then went on to ask why would a parent not want to teach their kids the proper way of eating? I didn't know this way of eating when I was raising my adult kids and as a result my 25 year old is obese just like me! I feel horrible that I failed because I didn't find the answer sooner! I know I didn't have the information, but still I taught her to eat low fat diet. I also read every single WOE book out there but Atkins! I also don't understand why people keep saying "Kids need different things than adults!" WTF? They are just small adults and if Keto can cure diabetes in adults and or prevent it, then it can do the same in kids. It took 7 days for the WOE to fix my IBS! Why should we set up our kids with a way of eating that is unhealthy and just hope they don't get sick and dye before they are 40! Trust me we laid my nephew to rest at the age of 36 from diabetes...

As a school nurse and seeing the extremely high number of 5th and 6th graders that already have + acanthosis frightens me. When I make the referral for the to see their pediatrician for follow up evaluations, they always come back and say "the doctor says my child does not have diabetes!!! They said for them to diet and exercise". That's it. That's all of the education that the parent and child get from their doctors. So I try to explain to them what is happening to their child and what can help them. I live on Keto but have been directed to never suggest this way of eating to anyone by nursing administrators because it's not been studied enough and "not evidence based medicine". I skirt around it but feel I am not really helping them. What should I do? I always start by telling them to avoid all sugar... then, cut rice, pasta, potatoes, grains, juice, all junk food. The school is mostly very low income and they tell me that they cannot afford to feed their family without rice, pasta, beans etc. And the kids are on free lunch so they are eating all junk food ... for breakfast and lunch. Total junk. It makes me sad and sick to see what the kids are fed. Where do I start to help these kids? It breaks my heart to think of how many future type 2 diabetics we have in our school. Please help me help these kids Dr. Berry.

Veggies, nuts, and berries 50,000 years ago? I seriously doubt it. Lab work? That is probably a bad idea to bother visiting a doctor to get orders for labs. Sorry Doc, even though most of my family was/is members of the Allopathic Medical Community I do not agree with the practice of having lab tests done to determine health. My reasoning is that the parameters used to measure lab results are bogus. I will visit a physician if I am genuinely in need of help. If I break a bone (not likely) or need to have a serious wound sutured then seeing a physician would be necessary. Perhaps some people have weak immune systems and really need to visit a physician several times a year but I don't catch colds or other communicable seasonal illnesses. My theory is that my lifestyle regularly exercises my immune system so if my body is invaded with an infection my immune response is powerful and rapid. As for blood work is concerned I no longer bother checking blood glucose. I have understood the cholesterol propaganda perpetrated by the Allopathic Community since the 1960's when I was in high school. My Dad (M.D.) was a heavy cream drinker. He ate butter, real sour cream, and drank heavy cream. He and I had long involved discussions about the nutritional need for fat and particularly animal fat. That was when I learn about high fat, low carb diet used to treat Epilepsy. He learned it from his Dad (M.D.). My 30 year old son is a proponent of the carnivorous approach to ketogenesis.

Autism and the like has been on the rise and I was wondering why. The only thing I could think of that could effect health was the improvement of technology and the increase in unhealthy sugary foods. So, I looked up things about carbs and autism and apparently there’s actually a little bit of information pertaining to it. Some parents would put their children showing autistic symptoms on a low carb or ketogenic diet and sometimes their symptoms would decrease. I couldn’t find anything much about pregnant women who were doing Keto and the effects of their child but apparently a Keto baby’s head starts off bigger compared to a standard diet baby. After a certain time their development evens out, but I have no idea if it effected autism in some way. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m nervous because my family has a lot of people with autism, learning disabilities, other brain disorders and I’m trying to see if there’s something I can do to help my child whilst they are in the womb to hopefully prevent any disorders. I’m already of the mindset that I just won’t have babies just in case and let my family line die off lol. But babies are so cute..

Hi! I'm new to Keto and have a quick question about macros. I have been meeting my protein goal, staying under on my carbs, but I've been going over on my fat macro. Will this stall weight loss? I've seen so many mixed opinions. TIA!! Your videos are great!!!

I’ve gotten an extreme bad stomachache and it’s still hurting! I don’t know if it’s either keto, or me just eating two meals a day
