Awesome video with a lot of really useful suggestions! I was going to suggest that a series of additional videos to expand on each of these topics would be really fascinating. Also, sociolinguistics and interventional conversation analysis are really useful on the applied side, particularly in healthcare settings. Forensic linguistics can be really interesting as well. Just tossing a couple ideas out there if you decide to do more of these informative videos. :)

Thanks for the info! I’m looking to transfer from community college to Uni for a bachelors in linguistics. They have a minor in Tesol or computational Linguistics paired with this degree. What are your thoughts on the Tesol certificate ?
@alexusandmichiАй бұрын
A TESOL certificate is great if you want to teach English to non English speakers! Many places abroad accept it, too! That‘ll be what most employers look for if you want to teach English! You could still do TESOL research with the certificate, too. But it’ll all be teaching-focused. Computational linguists are what all the big companies want to hire! It’ll be a lot of data analysis with large datasets of spoken and/or written texts. You could stay in academia or go into industry! So it all depends on what you prefer doing once you’re done with the degree!

Well, if you get your Ph.D., you have a great chance to get employed at the university, where you got it. If it's not the case, these chances of getting your dream job as a certified linguist shrink like...eh, sorry, I wouldn't really like to make a politically incorrect comparison here. Why is like that? Because, what gets you employed in case of a non - academic job, is EXPERIENCE. Without it, a potential employer won't even give a [sorry, I feel like using the F - word here] about your diploma. It's a fact of life.

im at Northern arizona university doing english w/ emphasis in linguistics. They have the applied linguistics program here. And also I know up here they are working with native american languages.

can you do applied linguistics and like anthropology? Like working with ancient languages or something?
@alexusandmichi5 ай бұрын
That’s definitely a good idea! If you want to do applied linguistics, you could probably eventually work with people that work on language revitalization programs, if you only care about the language side of things, maybe an academic career in language documentation?
