Hi Arika! Do you think that the name MS 'Business Analytics' is a little misleading when employers look at someone's resume, or if they ask what Business Analytics is in an interview? I feel like many topics are learned in the degree, like Statistics, but because the name is Business Analytics, some employers may not value the degree or dismiss it as "Oh that's not Statistics", and end up going with another candidate.
@ArikaReddy3 жыл бұрын
Hi Prince! This is a great point. In my resume, I have highlighted the relevant coursework under my Masters degree with all of the coursework that might be relevant to a role in addition to the name of the program. The official name of my degree was Masters of Quantitative Management:Business Analytics. I have seen that employers usually have an idea that an analytics program is data centered.

Hey Arika. Could you share your views on MS-MIS vs MBA-MIS (dual degree) vs MSBA for someone who has done BBA in UG and currently a final year MS-Cybersecurity/Information Security from India. And aspiring for Master’s in USA. I really like your honest views. I have some specific questions. Do you mind if we connect.?
@ArikaReddy2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anika! It all depends on your career goals. For myself, I really like having a degree with a clear focus so that’s it’s not confusing for potential employers. The dual degree may be beneficial if it has a clear focus and you have a distinct idea of what to do with it. Otherwise, you may as well get a degree on one domain and focus your skills there. Generally, I only recommend getting an MBA after a few years of experience and not right out of school. If you get an MBA/MIS dual degree right out of school it may dilute the value. Again, this is just my personal opinion and there are a lot of factors to consider.

Arika, how much did it cost you to do Master's in BA? Please elaborate more on this including living expenses. Is the course curriculum easy or difficult to navigate through? Anything we can do to be better prepared for the rigorous curriculum?
@ArikaReddy3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ankit! I can make a part 2 in the future. It was about 55k for tuition and fees after scholarships. Living expenses were about 10k. Total it was about $65k but I did choose to go to a more expensive school. The curriculum was harder for me in the beginning because I did not have much of a programming experience. I would suggest learning SQL and R/Python and you should be very well set up.
@ankit.kumar193 жыл бұрын
@Arika Reddy Thanks for replying. I feel $55K is way too steep, especially for someone from India, considering the USD-INR exchange rate. This is what concerns me along with the H1-B uncertainty after graduation. Please make a video on three things: (1) Your experience while doing Master's - total expenses, courses you had to undertake, things you wish you had known earlier etc. (2) How easy/hard is it to get a job after graduation and the whole job hunt process. (3) What kind of work do you do at your workplace - like the kind of projects you do, tools you use etc. - maybe in detail. These things would be really useful for someone like me who plans on doing Master's.

Hey arika ! Brilliant informative session . I have a few questions will be greatful if you can answer the query (since I am planning to pursue MSBA from NY/NJ) 1)does the business analytics field involve hardcore coding ? I worked as a software engineer for 3 years while I can do coding ,it's not something I do enjoy a lot 2)what's the longevity of Data science / business analytics field overall ? Will it be taken over by automation or any other new skill after 10 years ? Thanks !!!!
@ArikaReddy2 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks for watching. 1.) Generally, yes, there is coding especially during a Masters program. However, when it comes to finding a role you can find more of a BI Developer role that does not require coding. There are plenty of roles like this that exist. 2.) I do think there is going to be more stable growth over the next decade but of course, the marketplace will look pretty different 10 years from now. I don't think Data Science will entirely get automated as you still need people to define the business model and construct appropriate models. There will also be a need for people that can speak the language of data and also understand business problems. It's hard to fully predict, but I am very optimistic about the future.

I have an MS in Mathematics but did my master's report in statistics using R Markdown. I have a lot of math and stats background, but lack a lot of programming skills. I basically learned R and R Markdown to write my report, but I loved the experience in exploring data and inference procedures. My university offers an MSBA (one year). Do you think it's worth it enrolling in an MSBA or learning the skills using Data Camp or other platforms that have boomed recently? I feel like enrolling in a university will keep me focused in learning and staying on track. I've tried to self-teach, but work keeps me busy even after hours.
@ArikaReddy2 жыл бұрын
Hi Vidal! Thank you for the comment, this is a great question. I would 100% recommend that you self learn with data camp/kaggle OR pay a tutor to take you through coding and give you assignments. Due to the high cost of investment with the additional year of your time and money, I think you can 100% self learn the skills especially since you already have an MS in Math(which is great for the field). You don’t necessarily need more school but just a good dose of disciple to self learn(or get a job with a focus on stats and learn on the job)
@Vidaljr882 жыл бұрын
@@ArikaReddy I can self learn, I have many popular R books, but I guess I need to learn what platforms are in demand. I know Tableau, SQL, R, and python are top platforms. If you were me and with your current knowledge, what do you recommend I learn first, second, etc.

I would 100% start with SQL. That’s the most in-demand that you can learn the quickest. I would recommend you do a data camp course or two on intro to sql and then practice on leetcode. For Python, there is this book called learn Python the hard way that’s really good and I would start that next. Tableau can be learned the quickest out of all of them. Hello! I personally know people that have opted for a second masters. If you truly think that that's the easiest way for you to break into the field, it's not a bad option. I would first recommend trying to do some courses in data and integrating data into your day to day job and seeing if you can transition internally. Otherwise, a masters is a good option to consider.

Hey Arika is business analytics related to data science?
@ArikaReddy2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nithin! Thanks for the questions. How I personally view it is that a business analytics course is an umbrella that teaches you SQL, R/Python, Tableau/PowerBi and general business/statistics knowledge. Then, you can take this and apply it to a specific role such as that of a data scientist where you might use statistics and programming to help the business.
