A friend of mine owns a Volkswagen Golf MK4, and as far as I could tell, it has never been cleaned (the car not the friend). I'd been threatening to steal Sam's Golf and take it for a valet, so today, I finally did.
Whilst the car gets cleaned we have a history lesson on the Volkswagen Golf, dipping into where it came from. We talk production numbers for the Mk1, MK2 and Mk3, and debate whether the MK4 is the best of the bunch.
Once the car is cleaned we see just how far its's come, before concluding on why a MK4 Golf is probably the only car you'll ever need... ever.
And oddly for Geoff Buys Cars... Not a Volvo in sight.

My first ever car, a golf MK5 FSI, got me all the way to Aberdeen and back with 500 miles on one trip without breaking down or having any sort of issues what so ever. Got me all the way to Aberdeen on what could possibly be one tank of fuel. Took me 8 and a half hours to do the entire trip with a 45 minute break in-between. Even though I really, REALLY hate the appearance, I have to admire the appearance and honestly with the way things are going, I will not be upgrading anytime soon. Regardless of what scrappage scheme gets in my way.

@@Ben31337lor you could do like me…. Have 2 mk4 gtis and if one breaks down or has something that gives you pause to keep your daily grind on, park it in the driveway and drive the other while you can fix it at your leisure. Worst case you have a donor you can steal parts from to keep at least 1 running if the worst should happen and both go down. 🤙🏽

I had a 2003 VW Golf MK4 1.9 SDI and it just kept going until it was sold on in 2019 with 257k miles. The only non wear and tear item to be replaced was the wiper motor and the radiator was replaced too but that was due to it being hit by a flying brick from a skip lorry. Engine was rock solid and the car spent 11 years in my family.

Same with my 1.8t golf, it had new cambelt water pump and is getting vacuum hoses fixed today from air leak with new undertray fitted. It is also going stage 2 remap next week and shits on most things on the orad after 20 years! 285BHP from 1.8, they dont make many cars like that today!

Bang on the money there. I've owned newer cars and theve cost more money to maintain. Which people feel obliged to pay for because the cost of maintenance is still less than the overall value of the car. My car history has gone from a X reg to a 51 reg. To a R reg (polo that blew up in 6 weeks) to a x reg to a 04 reg to 09 reg to 12 reg back to a 03 reg and 56 reg second car and 13 reg van. My 03 focus St170 is my oldest car I've ever bought at 19 years old. And in the midst of spending over £1200 getting it fixed on a value of £1000. I bloody love the car. Normal populas are obsessed with the latest trends and newest car on the driveway rather than a car that makes them happy to drive it.

This makes me happy! My 85 yr old Dad has a 2002 1.9TDI in silver same as this & my kids call him “The Moss King” because the car has all sorts of lichens & moss growing all over it! To him it’s a tool & he could t give a fcuk about the aesthetics! It’s mechanically 100%, always gets whatever it needs & is driven very gently. I think it has 130k miles on it now, but only 40k of those in his ownership since 2008 or so. It’s had a very easy life & will probably live forever! I’d love if, when he hangs up his driving gloves, my eldest would be able to take it over & learn to drive in it, but insurance companies here in Ireland will not give you a policy on such an old car unless it’s a classic policy with limited mileage etc. The sad reality is that it will probably be fit for nothing but scrap, not due to its own fault but due to a system that supports the car manufacturing / sales industry churning out new cars over keeping beauties like this alive. Keep up the good work Geoff!!!

I had a PD130 for a few years whilst my commute was 2 hours a day. It was fast, economical (50+ mpg), could fit a ton of things/people inside (I once bought a double bed with mattress and brought it home in that Golf). It was very comfortable, everything you needed was to hand really easily and all the dials/controls were well thought out and extremely legible. We once went for a long weekend camping in Bruges with 2 bikes, tent, clothes etc from Oxfordshire and back and it didn't miss a beat. Not bad for £1200 I only got rid of it when I treated myself to my 850 T5 manual, that was 6 years ago and the 850 is obviously still going strong but I do miss the economy of the Golf

Previous owner was a 90 year old woman, but her old son was a hobby mechanic specializing in veteran vehicles, so everything was kept in good condition, full on professional interior cleaning, new studded nokian tires, oil+filter, air-filter etc (The ESP doesn't work) so he wanted to sell a safe car by adding those nokian tires. Anyways thanks for posting 👍

The only car I ever had from new was a 2000 Mk4 GTI 1.8T, three doors, default reflex silver but with blue Recaros. I loved it, drove it very hard but looked after it well and kept it for ten years until kids came along other cars took over. I decided not to sell it, but gave it to my Mum instead and she has also loved it ever since - sadly she’s added old lady dings, herbed the alloys and never really washed it properly but it remains reliable but still comfy, swift and respectable during its second decade on the roads, needing only the odd repair from a trusty old-school mechanic but never breaking down. It’s still on less than 60k so when she gives up driving (She’s 80) I will take it back, refurbish it cosmetically and keep it around. I have four other vehicles at the moment but I have a strange feeling that the golf, and that uncanny 1.8t engine that just never skips a beat, will outlast them all.

Been driving my MkIV VR6 for 13 years and it is still going strong. The people who say they're unreliable bought one with a 1.8t and automatic transmission and then got cheap with the oil. I'm sure that NA 1.6 can last forever if you just change the oil once in awhile and don't neglect the timing belt. I've had to overhaul the motor in mine due to a timing chain with a 150k mi service interval breaking at 126k🤦‍♂ Still cheaper than the way most people buy cars. I have about $30k US in it to drive it about 80k mi over the course of 13 years, including petrol. That's like half the Federal mileage reimbursement rate. Most people buy a new car for $30k, drive it for 5 years and buy another. Still have to pay for maintenance, repairs and petrol on top of that.

I started driving in 1977 when petrol was 50p/gallon. Yes gallon, not your EU corrupt measure of litre but gallon. My first car was a 1.6 mk1 capri. We went allover at the weekends and all you needed as back up was a small barn style toolbox a few tools chucked in it, a set of plugs, points and condenser. The diagnostic equipment consisted of a pair of eyes, a nose, a pair of ears and the central processing unit, commonly know as a brain. There wasn't anything that couldn't be fixed with that lot. Unless you needed another part you didn't bring. Point is, today you could have the whole factory race team mechs follow you and still not be able to fix a new car because its got a software bug or chips are on back order 😂🙃😂 Cars are like humans, you know where you stand with an old one 👍😂

How can people keep a car like this? I mean you drive it daily and you want to sit in traffic with all that around you? Absolutely Nasty. Even if you are not a car person, at least pay to take it for a clean once in a while. Do you keep your house or yourself in that state? Glad it’s sorted and what a difference it makes. I am not a MK4 Golf fan, nor am I a VW fan. However keeping older cars on the road is far better than buying an EV for instance.

I was made redundant in 2017, I love driving and motorcycles, so decided on a 40,000 mile 2013 Peugeot Partner Tepee, the plan was if need be remove seat, board it out and work Hermes etc. it has Aircon and electric windows that about it, it’s on 57,000 now. It’s not allowed into Birmingham, London or Bristol but ok for other ULEZ. Bath etc. It does a 400 mile round trip every 3-6 months at 55 mpg and the VED is £165 it’s worth about about £6,500. What can I but for that? A 1.5 diesel Focus estate would be nice but that will probably have 100,000 miles plus on. I’m retired now so can’t see me having anything else.

We sold it (still running sweet, and using no oil between services) to a private buyer who was in the doghouse for totalling his wife's Passat of the same era. In Australia, this Golf would never be used as an example of longevity. That title is exclusive to Toyota/Honda. I wonder if it's because parts for European cars in Europe are reasonably priced, so it's not as much of an issue when things break? And therefore it's more reasonable to keep them maintained for longer?

@SY-ml5nl quantum longlife 5w30 from the dealers. Changed every 10k miles. Engine was still pulling like a train when it left me... I had read about "chocolate cams" prior to buying it back in 2012, but didn't happen to mine 👍👍

I checked the reg of my very first car.... Its the only reg I can remember. A 1981 VW Jetta... According to the website... It was taxed and MOT'd in 2021 and is currently SORN. I presume its getting some work done. I got rid of it because it was the most unreliable POS to this day Ive ever owned.

Well that was a cool video but I got to the end and didn't see how Sam reacted when he saw his "new" car. That could've made it viral (could've).Thumbs up from me (obs.) and I saved you from half a Devil (I was thumbs up # 334). Maybe Dave's shy.

We went down to one car in lockdown because mrs was paying silly money for a financed car and she was WFH so didnt need it sold it to webuyanycar for a great price, anyways world starts opening up lad from work had a 1.2 mk4 polo that he wanted rid of for £150 had sat for a while but couple of bits i seen it needed for its mot and its passed the past 2 years first time, yeah the laquers peeling off but underneath is mechanically sound because im keeping it going and does about 45mpg mainly town driving, also parts are really cheap because the suspension is used on loads of vag plaform cars till about 2014 😂

That Golf 4 (not Mk4 please) has a BCB code engine and so has the build code PR-0GG which means it is EU4 PETROL and consequently thwarts Sadistic Khans ULEZ mislead addenda so the cars value doubles overnight inside the M25.
