As someone who works in a Samsung ASP, part of the post repair diagnostics is the Water Resistance Test. It uses air pressure to determine water resistance by utilizing the internal phone barometer and a weight or an external apparatus. So hopefully in the Right To Repair future, the diagnostics tool becomes available to the public instead of seeing you dunking a phone in water.

How does Samsung test the water resistance for their folding phones? I imagine those phones would only have one barometer still right? How'd you verify both sides are sealed?

I recently replaced the old adhesive on my S10+ as the old adhesive started turning gooey and the back glass started falling off. So I spent a lot of time removing the old adhesive as it was VERY gooey then I used the precut adhesives from Aliexpress. Those held up pretty well even after dropping my phone in a bucket half-filled with water. The secret is to remove the old adhesive and residue before replacing it with new ones. That way the phone is properly sealed.

This video reminds me of when I used to travel to Jamaica with my family several times a year. The children loved it. Especially, chasing the baby animal and waking up early to go out with their grandfather to feed the animals. They are all professionals now and give back to Jamaica in many ways. Bless up to you and your family.

There are ways to relatively test the water-tightness of a phone (slightly gross): Eject the sim tray, then try to suck (not blow otherwise you might trip the water indicator) out of the sim slot. After that just move your lip in and see if it holds the suction or not. Keep in mind, the phone is dirty, so sanitized the phone before and after the test. And if you can test using the internal barometer, just use it instead. The test above is only mostly used with iPhone as it does not have any diagnostic menu easily accessible and downloading an app when you have to check someone else machine on the spot is a big hassle.

If you sent your phone to repair, don’t ever submerge it. If done correctly, yes, the phone can still be water resistant, but some phone repair shops just leave the old adhesive or replace it with one that is not air tight sealed.

@@eddiew.4650 Originally, you got a waterproof phone to take pictures of each other in the pool. Sony advertised this all the time. They backed it up by warrantee by doing an air pressure test if you sent in a water damaged phone to rule out it wasn't negligence like unclosed covers. But they stopped the warrantee shortly after prolly due to too many claims. A new phone is likely sumbergible for a while until you break the seal somewhere due to wear. I'm sure weather is a factor too.

My Mom put her Pixel 3a XL through the washing machine, and while it seemed to be working fine afterwards, I wanted to be sure nothing got in. Since it was pushing 3 years old, I figured it was time for a new battery anyway, so I opened her up, AND IT WAS BONE DRY INSIDE. Very impressive for a device without an official IP rating. I work at a place called batteries plus and we repair some phones, we do iPhone and Samsungs. for iPhones we put some aftermarket adhesive that's not gonna make it water resistant as it once was because obtaining that kind of adhesive is a bit of a pain for iPhones. (Shout out to Apple!) However for our Samsung phone repairs we're partners with Samsung and one of the very few phone repair companies that has access to genuine Samsung parts as long as Samsung themselves has it in stock. Samsung parts however are very expensive because well, it's Samsung parts. Samsung however gives us the adhesive that comes with the device originally and the device WILL stay water resistant, we get more iPhone repairs though than Samsung because of the price, a new screen is expensive and you're looking at about $400 USD for something like an S21 & S22 Ultra screen. Regardless it's not that we *don't* want to add the adhesive to iPhones, it's that we aren't provided the parts to ensure it is. We've done some amazing things to bring back some phones that were believed to be completely dead.

I had an S8 years ago and fixed it with new screen after the original one broken, I have to admit that I may not be good at repairing because I broke the battery and the back glass durung the process. However, I replaced a transparent back glass that I can see if the water resistance still exists. Unfortunately the water went into the phone maybe due to my bad work, but the phone still worked good before I sold it. I think the mother board may have some solutions to make it kind of water resistantable.

Sort of a flawed test since you need heat to remove the adhesive, and you didn't check the cof bond of the screen which breaks easily when exposed to liquid causing it to black out or have lines, no idea if you could xray the phone in a way that you can see water inside though

If a fall is severe enough not just to damage the display, but also the outer frame it sits on, I suppose chances are the ability to get a proper air-tight seal on the device is also compromised, correct? So I'd need to try and find a replacement outer frame as well. I got a couple old devices like that that I am not confident to daily-drive because of this.

I think it should be a law that, if the seller/manufacturer advertises water-resistant devices they should cover it under warranty. Why can a brand claim a non-damaged phone has water damage, and therefore not fix a boot loop, if there are images on their website with water splashes on the phone?

If you are going the repair, make sure to remove all old adhesive from the frame and the back glass. As any residue will cause a gap failing any pressure testing. Another good way is taking a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol to clean the surface. Especially with older phones, the adhesive will be gross with many debris. Once you seal the back and front. Heat with a hair dryer or a heating pad for around 5 minutes on a low-ish heat. This helps the adhesive conform the curves ensuring good seal. This also applies to other devices. iPhones have areas where debris will collect in the frame. If you don't feel comfortable, don't feel bad. See if a local repair shop can redo the adessive for a small fee. Especially uBreakiFix stores, they have access to OEM adhesives from Google, Samsung, and Apple (special order cases).

My wife had a Galaxy Watch Active2 as shown in the video. It fell apart after two years and 3 months. The display just came off. And Samsung said that there was no warranty left, but we could trade in the watch and buy a new one, plus a small discount. We thought: ok, that's fair. Guess the actual value of the watch quoted by Samsung: zero! Because it was damaged. What a disaster. My Huawei Watch GT from 2018 came as a gift with my Mate 20 Pro, because I pre-ordered the phone. They are still going strong, every day. Shame on Samsung, and a shame that Huawei is not what it used to be. I am happy to see that water resistance can be solved by yourself though, so thank you for the video :)

Hi Hugh - Back in 2021 I created software to test the water resistance seals on a phone (unfortunately only Android, since I'm an Android developer). My goal was to help people be able to hold phone manufacturers and repair shops accountable - if the phone is advertised as IPX7/IPX8 rated, then it should be held up to that. It would be great to know if it helps you test your own repairs... YT keeps deleting my comment when I mention my software's name...

The way it works is it monitors the pressure sensor inside of most modern phones to detect whether the seals are intact. It monitors for a threshold of changes in pressure when the user presses on the screen. This pressure value does not change, if the phone is not/no longer water resistant.

I had the same issue with s21 plus, due to phone heating overtime i think there are gaps in the adhesive. My phone just dipped for 1 second in a tub and that got full water in the phone. As a result all cameras, and speaker got damaged which had to be replaced. I avoid dipping phones now unless absolutely necessary like in rain time. I would not risk testing water resistance on slightly older phones, as most testing done by companies are on brand new phones.

Coming from having had a semi-smart G-Shock watch die to water damage after getting the battery changed, if assembled correctly I trust it's construction way more than this Samsung smartwatch. Lesson learned, going forth I will replace the battery myself, already did on cheaper watches but I wanted to be certain that this one stayed water resistant, as it was very expensive for what it does. But as much should be expected, such a full smartwatch has way more capabilities at the cost of lasting an order of magnitude less, both in general and battery life, assuming proper maintenance. Though similarly as to how you are using an older Blackberry, a MIP semi-smart G-Shock is a nice middle-ground of connectivity, which I found pleasant for judging whether I should check my phone.

the answer could be opposite, if the adhesive is original or not sometimes it could be water-resistant, but it could degrade overtime as long as 10 years. but if the water still seeps in, then it is not water-resistant. so is B7000 glue could be water-resistant, but if it's clear then water can still get in the device and mess with the internal components and damage it forever.

My samsung galaxy watch had the screen popped off as well. Turned out to be a battery issue. The battery pushed the screen out. Just 3 years and then they need repair or replacement. So sad.

I use stitching thread and binds the whole phone with it. It helps the liquid glue to stick much better.

My galaxy watch did the same thing, but in my case I believe the fact that it is 2 years old and I took it straight from the charger and go out to work ended up causing some kind of thermal shock that resulted in the screen taking off, lucky I have the tools at work to glue it back.

I got my Galaxy A52 screen replaced which came with frame. it was not water resistant anymore and after macro schots i found out the new frame was bent on top edge and i showed that to service center and after arguing for two days they replaced the screen again. Fortunately it was clear the problem was a defect otherwise they would have done nothing about it

Pre-cut adhesive is generally expensive id rather stick with liquid cause it works like a gasket

Should have tried this with a clear back, that way youd be able to watch & see if water got in the back!

I should suggest triste again as I did in the original video featuring the galaxy s8, you should try to install the original Australian software since it's running Claro carrier software, since it does not match with the phone's model no. it is known to cause issuer
