This interview makes me feel very optimistic. I also think that civil society, sport, leisure activities, the arts and culture in general, have an important integrating role to play. If I know my neighbour, I am less likely to fear or hate him. Developments like the Cultúrlann (cultural centre) in West Belfast and the existence of a GAA (Gaelic sports club) in traditionally protestant East Belfast should help to de-politicise Gaelic culture and sport. These things belong to all Irish people.

Scottish independence will happen first. This political goal is being actively pursued. In contrast Irish unity is not. Sinn Féin are just building their party in readiness for being in power in both Irish jurisdictions following the next elections. Then they will be able to ask for a border poll. A future English parliament will want to decomit from the costs inherited from the UK era and the economic links between NI and England will become more strained by distance if trade has to route around Scotland. The subvention currently going to NI will be needed to equalise economic opportunity within England.

PS: For our European friends; Éire written in an English sentence is considered a derogatory use of the Irish word, it stems from Britain's incapability to deal with a former colony fairly and its begrudging recognition of its legitimate status as a country, "Ireland". The Westminster Government will have to become advocates for and persuaders for a United Ireland. This is the responsible and historically right approach. Westminster, would be joining the U.S.A, The E.U, and most other Countries with an interest in these islands, who want to see Ireland United.

@@julianshepherd2038 "And the ulster protestants don't give a shit what you, Westminster or Washington think"? Yes, because defying Westminster, Washington and Brussels is obviously a winner if you are a member of the ageing, shrinking and dying Protestant/Unionist/Loyalist(PUL) minority in Northern Ireland(NI)... Back in reality, a large part of that community is quite pragmatic. As Ken Maginnis pointed out; "One third of Unionists are loyal to the Crown. The other two thirds are loyal to the half-crown!"

As this good guest said, Westminster has no say in the reunification of Ireland. It all depends on the two parts to agree by referendum. I think Brexit has simply accelerated something that was going to happen anyway. The English should learn real History about what happened in Ireland and has been happening till recently in NI.

Really good interview. Long form, in depth conversations with relevant and reasonable questions and topics are the way to go.

Should be! Then Scotland, Wales, AND England should get their independence from the Imperialists at Westminster. The "British" goverment is in Cardiff!

The Republic is now basing it's economy on 21st Century technology and business. . Northern Ireland is sadly floundering along, hobbled by Brexit and still clinging to a 19th/20th Century model. . . Change and UNITY is inevitable.

Very interesting interview, thank you both. The 'antechamber' thing was a point I hadn't known about - i.e. the one-way nature of NI's status. One thing about Scotland, though: Kevin said Brexit wasn't an issue in 2014's vote, but I think it was. Weren't Scots told to vote No in order to preserve their place in the EU? And this has added to their fury about having their wish to remain in the EU ignored, strengthening their case for IndyRef2.
