Absolutely agree with you. History is far more important. Tell the stories of all those that have gone before us. In the end all the collections are just “ things” someone has taken a like to. Someone with money who could acquire items most of us can only dream of. He’s greatest contribution was restoration of this majestic castle and contribution to science. Thank you always for your wonderful videos. I get to travel from my armchair.

Absolutely, I'm glad he did what he did but the "stuff" left me cold. Unless an object had been handled by a person ( my god if I ever got to touch Anne boelyns book of hours I would probably cry then implode) stuff leaves me cold really. I annoy my family because I always say please don't buy me things, buy me experiences .. they are finally getting it now!

Many years ago my parents dropped me and my husband we were about 50 at the time. We walked from the castle to New Castle Upon Tyne, over many days. We walked along the coast and camped in a tiny tent. They have all pasted now. So just I am left with these special memories. I own a beautifull water colour painting of the castle taken from the beach. Beautiful. Thanks for jogging these memories Lucy.

This is somewhere that I have always wanted to visit and want to even more now. I had no idea of what is inside it, I thought it was a ruin, and I am so glad to see that it was restored. I'm in two minds about the displays, they are interesting in their own right, but I take your point of it not feeling quite right. I'm glad that you showed us round all the same Lucy. You must go someday, it's very beautiful and there is a lot to look at inside the castle; all behind glass and museum like so wouldn't have been much fun to watch on here. I'll never forget seeing the castle for the first time over the hill, will stay in my mind forever!

I visited there last year with a friend during that really hot week we had in September, and the weather was glorious. I didnt go inside but we visited the coastline and went to Holy Island first, but visited Bamburgh on the way back - its stunning, the beach is so amazing, it was the best day of the holiday truth be told - that whole coastline is stunning. Thank you for giving me a glimpse inside as we didn't go inside due to us coming late afternoon. But even the village its in is stunning also. I wanted to visit Cragside, maybe one day I will.

I was so sad I couldn't get the holy island. The tides were really off kilter for filming (you could access it either very very early morning or as the sun set) but I want to go back as the sacking of lindesfarne is something I've always been fascinated by. It's a wild, beautiful area of the country and i fell in love - I will go back but next time more than 3 days as it was a silly distance for such a short trip x

My late husband and I visited Northumberland many times and loved Bamburgh but never went inside the castle we just admired it from the beautiful beach ! We did visit Cragside however and found it really interesting and in lovely area , your ending was hilarious 😂❤

Ooh Bebbanburg! I am going to enjoy this one. I am such a fan of Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Chronicles novels about Uhtred and Bebbanburg. Not the dreadful TV series though. Too much was changed. Loved the outtake. I was saying "move! move now! it's coming for you!"

Well I guess it's been continued to be built over 1400 years which is pretty wild really! From a wooden structure to what we see today, Armstrong started the renovations in 1894 and passed away in 1900 but he saw it completed I believe so the renovations were quite quick really.

I agree that the inside is perhaps a bit overdone with collections, but I suppose they have to make up for the fact no one actually knows exactly what it would have looked like and it needs to make a lot of money to pay for the upkeep! I like ruins too, and kitchens! Probably where I would have been if I had lived there! I haven’t soon the films but I would recommend the books - films are often a disappointment when you’ve read them first . Glad you got to Beamish , I knew you’d love it . The fifties section was only being built when we last went. My favourites were the farms and the old miners cottages. The castle on Lindisfarne is great- made into a dwelling again, but anEdwin Lutyens little masterpiece with a little garden by Gertrude Jekyll! Happy travelling and thanks for sharing them with us! The Last Kingdom is riveting. I hate blood and guts but this series good grief I binge watched it. If you get a chance I think you may enjoy it. I tried to watch Game of Thrones and couldn't make head nor tail. Not a patch on The Last Kingdom. Thanks for this visit, again a place that I could easily wander around, as you say the outside soaking up the history. The museum - dungeon etc would be there to get the visitors/tourists in. It really depends on expectations and reasons for going. Lol visualising Viking long boats would be chilling enough for me, even though I have a drop of their blood in me =-) Take care as always.

I think I must have a drop of their blood in me too, a few years ago I did one of those DNA tests, I couldn't resist and I had an above average amount of Scandinavian DNA and loads of German too - no one really knows where it has come from but I can only think it must be that! I will check out the Last Kingdom, I believe there are 5 seasons now so that's a long of binging to do - and that's no issue for me!! Love a good series to get into. I've just finished The Serpent Queen so good timing!

@@throughlucyslens The Last Kingdom's characters are loosely based on people in history. The settings are quite authentic. I just loved the whole 'atmosphere' even though it was ruthless but that was what it seemed to be at times in the times.

We visited Bamburgh earlier in the year and felt similarly about it - started watched The Lost Kingdom after visiting and are really enjoying it - it’s better than GOT - Craigside is a must you will have to go back 😊

Agree with you, the castle and the grounds outside are so much nicer than what’s inside of it. My opinion. I get it why the family needs to stage the interior, more visitors, more money for the upkeep . I watched a few episodes of The Last Kingdom the other night…….meh, too violent for me. I appreciate British detective shows like Vera or A Touch of Frost that will show a snippet of blood and gore but give its audience the chance to solve the crime on their own. A beautiful building with tonnes of history but I was thinking “why all the inappropriate tat” Stuff with no meaning or relevance with the castle at all. I still enjoyed every minute of this though. I bet this place will still be standing in another 1600 years. My parents were up that way a few years ago when they were filming for Transformers. Well, last night (amid tears in Season Five, particularly Uhtred's), I finished binge-watching TLK. Despite the complete mess I am living in, I just couldn't stop watching this show!!! The cast are ALL fantastic (though Uhtred, of course, has my heart :) And despite the blood-and-guts, I fully intend to rewatch this show, at a slower pace - after that is, I have seen the film sequel "Seven Kings Must Die"!! I'm wondering where my genetic heritage lies?? Dane? Saxon? Briton? Alban? (I'm Aussie in this Lifetime and of English-Scots heritage!!) I like the way this content maker takes the time to pan slowly around what is being shown. It makes the viewer feel they are there. I also like that there isnt the constant drone of background music over the video. I dont understand why other videos have muzac playing over the narrative, its distracting and annoying.

If it adds impact or tells a story fine but using it to fill a gap drives me mad, what's wrong with quiet and contemplation? - adding more noise to a noisy world. If you like adventure stories set in Anglo-Saxon times with Vikings thrown in, The Last Kingdom is worth a watch. I enjoyed it. As to its historical accuracy, it wasn't too glaring in its inaccuracies.

Totally get the "exhibition vibe" can be disappointing, always wish certain historical places were more "lived in original" less exhibition but a huge & tough conundrum for historical sites. One place you may love is the magical Snowshill Manor & Gardens. Snowshill is the unconventional home of the eccentric Charles Wade, who delighted in creating a stage for his life and passions (collections). Quirky rather than exhibition feel. Set in gorgeous lands with live sheep in the fields surrounding the tea garden! Staff are great chatty & helpful down-to-earth. Wade travelled the world buying inventions & artefacts. The vibe is so strong he used every space to show off his collections but retains a homely yet magical atmosphere. Snowshill, near Broadway, Gloucestershire, WR12 7JU

Hey! I do love it there, it's one of my favourite places in the world - I made a video about it that's already on here - a while ago now though. I feel like they get collecting right there, because they tell his story and there's a connection to every single thing, it almost speaks to you out the walls - and yes! What a vibe!

I felt a bit the same at Warwick castle to be honest. Absolutely stunning outside and some interesting stuff but on the whole it had a bit of a money grabbing theme park vibe I think this is mostly due to the company that own it which I won't name but it's just gone down the London dungeon route a bit which I didnt feel was that authentic in places. I completely understand that costs are involved and they are massively expensive to upkeep.

I haven't been to Warwick castle since it's been taken over by wizards (get it? 😅) when I was a kid it was just a huge ruin with an absolutely terrible dungeons and the occasional reenactment group doing a joust. I like kenilworth up the road, I adore the Dudley / Elizabeth connection x

Dear Lucy, At anytime during your research, do you recall if there was a law passed in the 1960s that prescribed school children must visit Bamburgh Castle? Did said law contain subsections administering to the requirement that Barry the Drinker must sit on your packed lunch, have a child vomit on you, arrive on the wettest, coldest summer's day on record in only a T shirt and shorts. And was it really necessary to stipulate there must be no toilet facilities on the coach, when you have been assigned the seat next to Barry the Drinker, who has been working his way through the dozen bottles of Barr's pop he has smuggled aboard? (I am asking for a friend).

😂😂😂😂 this sounds like Toms law to me! (Same story with Weston-super-mare when you are a Brummie kid, 5 hours to get there, 5 hours to get back, 1 hour looking at a muddy estuary and several rivers of vomit commanding court coming down the middle of the coach!)

I also loved the nature and views more but that's maybe because I'm not a great fan of this sort of castles and the era they were build in. But I enjoyed the video nonetheless and appreciate the sacrifices you make for us (your wet feet). 😂

I'm afraid I don't know why, I have looked the memorial up and it's a replacement funded by the War Memorials Trust in 2021 - they might have some more information about it.

There is so much lies about history...we dont know the truth any more. The worst thing that happened in England was the breakup of the catholic church by Henry VIII. England was never the same since.

Interestingly I went to a recreation of a pre-reformation church on Monday - it was mindblowingly amazing!
