Looks great, I recommend a Trivet under the kettle so it doesn't boil over, and will still put humidity into the air. Also I definitely recommend switching the ceiling fan up instead of down, the heat settles at the ceiling so you want to move that air, you should see a pretty immediate change if the stove has been on for a while. remember to keep a couple inches of ash in the firebox to protect the bottom bricks and give the coals somewhere to hide overnight so you still have warm air for easy draw in the morning. Don't damper it down past halfway, even overnight, Burn the wood, don't smoke it.

All great. I have a trivet for when I cook, I should use it for the kettle too! And yes I damp it all the way down when it’s raging, over the last month or so, I’ve been leaving it a little lower than half damper, been working well. I haven’t mastered the all night burn just yet but getting closer I think. Thanks for the comments!

I wouldn't keep your guitar near the stove, maybe not in the same room. A wood stove will dry the air really fast, and the wood of the guitar will dry out too. Not an ideal environment for the guitar, which needs 40 to 60 % humidity. Having a pot of water on the stove is a nice idea, but in winter, that is not nearly enough. A good humidifier will also make the room feel more comfortable.

I had installed the Quadra Fire 3100 Limited series, the version before this model. We moved to an acreage and we need a wood stove here. I am going to install a Discovery model as I like the taller stove top. I have cooked on it several times. We have -40 temperatures where I live and the stove would keep us warm.

good video. i've burned wood for almost 30 years. you did a great job. i put an additional damper in my stove pipe to control the burn a little more and to keep the heat in the box a little longer. not called for but a lot of the long time wood burners have them. also helps to shut it down in case it overfires. i have a little Jotul F3CB I've had about 15 years. Good little stove also. wish i had a little more room up top to do some cooking if need be. enjoy your stove.

To check for an air leak around the door, or elsewhere, take a cigarette lighter (or your fire-lighting device) and pass it slowly around the perimeter of the door and anywhere else you suspect and if there is an air-draw you will see the steady flame of your device being drawn inwards where any gap might be. To clean the glass where necessary, take a double-sheet of newspaper and scrunch it up into ball, or a type of scouring pad with a smooth side. Have a bucket with a couple of inches of water in it. Warm water is good, but cold will work fine too. Quickly dip the surface of your newspaper pad into the water. Don't get it too saturated that the paper will begin to disintegrate. Then dip the wet side of the paper into the wood ash in your ash pan. Rub away at the glass and it will remove deposits very nicely, even hardened-on black stuff if you persist (doesn't take too long). You might need more than one paper pad, depending how much muck there is to remove. When all the baked on dirt is removed, take another paper pad and just use it with the water alone to remove any dirty streaks. Then dry the glass with a couple of dry paper pads and perhaps an old cloth to get it visibly dry. Leave the door open for ten minutes or so to ensure the glass is properly dry before starting a fire. If there is any residual dampness on the glass it can attract the dirty smoke and stain again quite quickly, although not usually badly. If you have a good supply of secondary air washing over the glass, all the above should be minimal, but eventually you can expect to do a little cleaning maintenance now and then. Simple fogging or a mild haze on the glass might not need the full water and ash treatment. Try it with just warm water on a dampened cloth.
@Fatguyintheforest
@Fatguyintheforest Жыл бұрын
Thanks for all the tips. I will try the lighter trick definitely. For cleaning the glass so far I’ve used a paper towel, couple squirts of windex and a dip in ash, comes off fairly easily.

Nice video, there is nothing like a wood-stove . With a wood stove and a supply of firewood you are free from the crazy prices now on electricity and gas. I also have fan on top of the stove, it really helps. In Sweden we prefer birch wood , I think it is the best but of course I use what I can source, birch, pine and spruce mostly. What do you use for fire wood ? Greetings from Sweden.

We are entirely electric heat so the stove fits the bill nicely. If the power goes down, we are covered now. I burn with oak mainly most readily available. I have some cherry for when I smoke food same with a little maple. The cherry absolutely smells amazing outside. Just hard to come by. I will have to find birch, I know it’s out here. Thanks for the comment and enjoy the upcoming season.

Another tip, never use the fire for too many hours, we use to say burn for 4 hours, let it rest for 4 hours. It depends on how your chimney is located. A steel chimney with insulation of course, can dry out the wood in the attic if it is close enough. It can be so dry that it can self ignite, this has happended. If the chimney is made of bricks and cement it much cooler of course..But always check the chimney and the attic.

You should do an up date on weather it is okay to have a big wood stove in a small living space. Older stoves did not have to burn hot. This epa approved stove needs a hot fire for secondary combustion or their should be a lot of soot. I did read your comment about the overnight burn. What was the outcome. Make a video. Just like this. With the temperature outside and inside. If the whole house was warm. Type of wood. Green or seasoned. I know you use seasoned. Details are everything. Even when you no longer felt the heat from the stove. How close you had to stand next to the stove to feel the heat before you relit it. Good job!!!

It looks like you have a vaulted ceiling in there and in the next room. If so, and it is an open truss inside that dividing wall above the door, opening a vent between the rooms would help a lot. Heat rises, so it is filling the room from the top down. You may even be able to feel it warmer at head level and flowing thru the doorway into the next room. A box fan in the vent will move even more warm air into the next room, while being up out of the way. The ceiling fan helps, and may be enough if there is more flow up high between the rooms. Nice stove. I like the quadrafire stoves. I had one at my last place and now have one of their pellet stoves. It is okay, but there is nothing like a real wood stove.
@Fatguyintheforest

Vaulted in the back, non vaulted in the house but you are right, I might install a in wall fan just above the slider door, one annoying thing though fans are very loud. I need to find a quiet variant. Pellet I went back and forth with that, I definitely enjoy the Wood stove. Rustic and almost primal. Thanks for the comment

We just put a Lopi Rockport in a few weeks ago and love it. Ours is in our small living room (maybe 12x26) and it gets warm but so far we've learned to get it to temp. (500F so the catalytic converter is hot) with a couple good sized pieces and then closed up everything once it gets going good and just throw a log on when it burns down to a very small flame or even embers. We can keep it around 72-75 doing this and so far it hasn't been uncomfortably hot and a bonus in our case is the heat reaches the top of the steps at the 2nd floor and stops so the bedrooms stay around 66-68F. Ours said a 10 hour burn time....I dont think so lol we put 3-4 good pieces in when we first installed (after the burn in fires) and we might have gotten 8 hours but then it's so hot it's very uncomfortable. We usually stop putting wood in around 7-8pm, maybe 9pm so our furnace can come on a couple times over night to keep our basement from becoming an icebox and it kicks on around 430am set at 68F. I think everybody with a wood stove has one of those little fans but I think they're useless, I don't feel any air movement from it. Lastly, if you have a good stove and the right piping you can burn continuously, I wouldn't keep it an inferno for hours on end but burn as much as you need to thats what they're for. Oh, and those hot spot stains are normal, I just take a wet paper towel dip it in the ash and it comes right off then a clean towel to wipe off the residue and comes out crystal clear for a few more fires.

Lopi was my pick for the stove to buy but I went with the quadrafire. I liked the features of it. I’ve had it burning all day. First snowfall today about 34 degrees outside, it’s 72 in the house, about 87 in the back room. No heat on at all besides the stove. Our bedrooms I’d have to check but feels a little cooler which is perfect for sleeping. I have a large ash bed at this point, I’m hoping to make it through the night. Sounds like you run your stove probably the same as I. Start it, get it hot, I add wood when the flame goes out Or just about. Enjoy the season and thanks for the comment!

We are wood burners from the 1970s. Presently we have two stoves in our 988 square foot home. The large airtight that is similar to yours, is situated in the full cellar. The heat " chimneys" up the central staircase. Then we have a vintage 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove in our open concept main living area. I had it going today. I just feed the fire box to barely keep it going. We will build a three seasons porch off the kitchen door, where excess heat will be directed. I suggest a simple closed porch to take advantage of your BTUs. I open screens to regulate a too hot fire until our porch is built. ~ Diane

You have the right idea, just maybe too much stove for your space, unless you add a bit more square footage. We are farmers in New Hampshire on our 350 acre working farm. If I were to have a smaller cottage, I would purchase an Irish Stanley airtight kitchen wood stove. They are smaller, with a hot water jacket. You can heat your house, hot water, cook and bake. Or the smaller model Amish airtight Kitchen Queen. I teach sustainability when I have the time, mostly rural NH lifestyles from 1920 to 1940 - off grid, but also HYBRID living. This is what we are currently doing today, on our farm. We use electricity and propane while it is still cost effective and available. Enjoy your adventure! ~ Diane

Absolutely can. I’ve made beef stew and chicken dumplings so far. I have a Trivet Incase it is cooking too fast. Cast iron, and I have an enameled Dutch oven that works great as well. If you are going for frying things, yes it will work, has to be hot for frying up eggs, steak, etc

How did last heating season go with this stove? I have a similar use case to you- supplemental heat in a small space so I will try to move cold air back toward the stove room. I'm debating between the Blaze King Sirocco 20 and Quadra Fire Discovery I.
@Fatguyintheforest
@Fatguyintheforest 11 ай бұрын
It kept up when going but as soon as I let it go, aka going to work, kids etc, it couldn’t keep up naturally. Most nights it was almost too hot in the back room. Had fans blowing it out. If it was in the living room (center of the house) I think it would do just fine.

@@Fatguyintheforest so if you went past 4 hour or so reloads, the btus fall off a cliff? Did you try moving the cold air (along the floor) back to the stove instead?
@Fatguyintheforest
@Fatguyintheforest 11 ай бұрын
@@chrisE815 I wouldn’t say fall off a cliff it holds its heat fairly well. But it’s tough to get it going all through night. After 8 hours of no feeding, still warm coals and can easily start a fire up again but temp drops during that time. Example. At bedtime say 11pm is 69-70 in the house. In the morning 6am 63 degrees or so it all depends how cold it is out. I’m also going with bigger cut pieces this year. Might make it last longer overnight

It’s been doing a great job, it’s sometimes tough getting the heat from the back room to the rest, it only borders one wall. Typically 85 in back room, 68-70 in the house when running for long periods

Any body who respects and loves their acoustic guitar should know better than to leave it in the proximity of that wood stove. It will dry that instrument out very quickly ,causing alot of serious problems for the guitar as in ruining it for good. Since yout heating with wood ,that instrument belongs in a case in a different room ,and humidified in its case to prevent such a thing.

Keep in mind that I've only used it for a couple weeks, that being said, so far so good kzbin.infoUgkxAU9pOCSV9Y5JprooHvfxTpOrt4hx8uRM . Using it at 8 ft. by 8ft. deer blind that is insulated. I have to keep the door cracked for it to get enough air to burn, but that is very likely the wood I've used. Much better quality than I expected for the price. Now if I can just take it easy in the beginning it won't be 90 degrees in my blind. All in all it seems like a keeper.

I love a fire. Hauling wood not so much..🤣🤣🤣 I start my fire at the bottom of the woodpile but hey you do you. I'm ashamed to say I'm from Michigan as well.....close that damper some of the way or all your heat goes out the chimney. Hello have you ever had a woodstove before? Not being mean just giving you smart information. OH AND YOUR CEILING FAN IS GOING SUMMER DIRECTION. FLIP THE SWITCH SO IT BRINGS THAT HEAT BACK DOWN.

@@Fatguyintheforest ok. But the point I making is you are using solar energy. Kind of a different perspective on energy. Just think about . photoelectric solar cells in my opinion is nothing but junk. Your stove is going to last a lot longer. Wood is pretty much a natural battery that mostly been feed by the sun. So yes . In my opinion burning wood is solar energy at its best.

@@AnX8765 when you research about the process of making photoelectric solar panels and that the panels have limited uses then you will start realize that you might as well burn the fuel that created the panels in the first place. Photoelectric salor panels are kind of a scam. They advertise as some off-grid source of energy you can live on and a lot cleaner then burning.
