Same here I loved the campaign and played it way more than aoe2 (also cause it was somewhat easier). Growing up I liked more and more aoe2 and now I'm pretty confident to call aoe2 the best game in the franchise and probably one of the best games ever created. But AoM has a special place in my childhood even though it's somewhat chunky and poorly balanced
@TylkoBajceps3 жыл бұрын
Is it poorly balanced? I see people play all the factions in the tournaments. I loved the campaign too. It obviously focuses on building a base and destroying the enemy, it's an rts after all, but apart from a few missions, most of them are pretty unique. I liked the maps design (greek, egyptian, norse, underworld, the one with shadows and darkness was so cool). And every one of them has this little mythology touch to it. Troy, Arkantos' dream, monsters in the undeground, giants in the north etc. Pretty surprised the author didn't appreciate it that much hete.

@@TylkoBajceps you are not wrong poorly balanced was a bad choice of word, it doesn't do justice to the game. But when compared to aoe2 it has some balance flaws: mainly the population system based on map control makes games very snowbally. Unit micro is in that aoe3 style where they feel very chunky and bizzarre cause of the whole repositioning stuff, and some of the god powers are just broken (ragnarok being the prime example).

Thanks for the review! Great to see some love for Age of Mythology. Some personal options on the campaigns. I personally think that the Fall of Trident campaign (Arkantos' story) is actually great and it is one of my favourite RTS campaigns ever. It truly feels like a Greek epic but intertwined with other mythologies. All the mythological/historical characters are done justice (I just love how you get to see and play with or against heroes from various myths), the original heroes have their unique personality and the missions have a great sense of scale (sieges actually feel like sieges and not 10 units capturing an entire town). Also, I feel the scenarios were pretty varied and, if nothing else, did not feel like simple skirmishes. Besides some wonky voice acting (and only at times), I really can't think of another substantial criticism. Honestly, I would probably purchase a remaster/definite edition even if just to replay it again even without doing much else.
@PrimevalRevenant3 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree with that. Even after having played multiple amazing games, both RTS and not, I still look very fondly upon the AoM campaign and still enjoy it whenever I replay it. I absolutely adored both main campaigns and I wish there was more of it, that isn't Tales of the Dragon. As a bonus, I also loved the little descriptions they had for EVERYTHING if you looked in the info page, from just regular old normal pig info to descriptions of myth units with scientific names and a whole bunch of lore.
@Bjjbhcoa863 жыл бұрын
Also it is so funny at times! From the sarcastic remarks between the characters to entire group being turned to pigs (thanks Circe), I laugh quite a few times during the story. It still saddens me that this game got virtually left behind while everyone slobbers all over AOE2. I'm glad it gets some recognition, even if it isn't by much. Maybe it was the less than stellar remaster and the disastrous final expansion, but I dont know, I just wish it were bigger - and had more of a scene. Its just more fun when every faction isn't exactly the same with a few bits swapped in and out. I would've focused more on the asymmetrical aspect of the factions - how different the resource gathering, pop management, structure building and research all are between the faction. To some players like myself, this is what keeps the game interesting, while AOE2 feels like a samey snoozefest. You missed out on that DLC though. Totally worth it on sale. Most of the campaign is unbelievably bad to the point of comedy. The voice acting, awful scripting, attempts at matching the original game's ambitions, it's great. The problem with the Chinese release was that they introduced bugs that affected the entire game. Want to click on the red exclamation mark on the unit box? Crash to desktop. Random stuff popping up in your production box in the lower left? Yeah you have to deal with it. Random unit animations breaking? Lighting changes from the eclipse god power causing the world to end? Yeah. I understand that they have patched many of these issues out, but for the love of God it was almost unplayable, and many glitches can still be identified that weren't present in the disk set. It feels like the QA for a freaking microsoft team was non-existent

As far as I know the studio which updated Age of Empire 1,2 and 3 want to redo Age of Mythology. Someone asked them (thankfully) if they did forget AoM or if they will do also an update. And they responded something like: no we didn’t forget AoM but it won’t be just an update like AoE series we have planned something different. So fingers crossed we get a hole rework or ground up update of this (imo amazing) series. Which shouldn’t have had part 2 and 3 already years ago. But at least it gets a special treatment and we can only hope it gets the attention and love its deserve. Maybe we will hear some new during this year (hopefully). Just wanted to leave this quick news here.

Tale of the dragon is not worth it for the campaign if that's your jam but it's fun to add if you play a lot of multiplayer because it adds some diversity if you've been playing the game for 18 years now

AoM is one of my favorite games from childhood. It is still very special to me today and I always prefered it over AoE 2 (which I still love very much) even though I played AoE 2 before AoM. Always loved the campaign and its characters, and spent some amazing time online back then, with all the amazing scenarios created by talented people. Cannibal survival, Build your Titan, Sumo-minotaur, Mutation, Cats and mouse, Gods are watching, RPG... There was even a Sim simulator for 6 hours long games ! So much amazing creators.

I remember playing this game and Rome total war way back in the days when they came out. They both taught me history and ancient mythology, esp AoM. I disagree with the campaign being a 12year old kid playing this it was so awesome esp for it's time AoM had its spot at one of the best RTS for it's time, they were competing with huge titles such as Cossacks, Starcraft and Warcraft.. I've played Cossacks back to war, AoE2, Starcraft 1, Warcraft 1-3, CaC Red alert 1-2 back in the days and none of theese games can be compared to the campaign and story in AoM exept Wc3 wich really brought the RTS genre to the next level.

I'd say the original format of the game isn't as good as I thought it was as a kid, however, the Steam rerelease made some major improvements that I personally really appreciate. Even so, the game naturally doesn't quite hold up. But it's one of few older titles that still offers a fun experience. Especially if you play the campaign. Though I do think the remake is certainly warranted. But out of all the games installed on my pc and playstation, AoM is the oldest that I still find fun to play.

This game is pretty special to me. I was in the fourth grade when my friends older brother showed us how to play. They had it installed on his family computer and we would always go straight to his house after school ended. During recess we'd spend our time in the "sandboxes" our school had and plot out ideas for our city. The Egyptians were always our favorite to build because we could make a giant sand Pyramid in the center lol. I'm really happy I got to grow up in the "Golden" age of PC gaming

13:21 In Darkest Night cheat, that'll get you that day/night cycle. Also you can change the shortcut's resolution to a custom as long as the game's set to windowed mode, or the full resolution of your screen completely render by the raw power of your HIGH RES GPU affecting an old game, I play/render my game to 900p for my laptop, though the 2D HUD will of course be stretched due to the nature of UI scaling.

My biggest problem with these early 3D RTS titles is that the unit-to-map/building/tree scale is stupid. The unites are massive, while the geography/buildings/trees are tiny in comparison. Warcraft 3 is the worst offender, but AoM is also quite bad. AoE2 is so much less offensive in this regard and thus aged way better.
@Zade_953 жыл бұрын
Yeah scale in 3d rts's used to annoy me so much lol. Empire Earth 2 was particularly bad
@Stikarii3 жыл бұрын
I could agree about the houses (even though it's not THAT bad/I've seen way worse... *cough* Cossacks *cough* ) But the trees !?! Just look at the game... AoM is the least offensive of any Age of game in that regard (yes, including AoE2, even without the mod that reduces trees sizes that all the high level players use)
