USS Alaska (CB-1), the first of a class of "large cruisers" designed as a compromise to achieve a fast cruiser with a relatively heavy main battery, was laid down on 17 December 1941 at Camden, N.J., by the New York Shipbuilding Corp.; launched on 15 August 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Ernest Gruening, wife of the Honorable Ernest Gruening, Governor of Alaska; and commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 17 June 1944, Capt. Peter K. Fischler in command. Following post-commissioning fitting out at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, USS Alaska (CB-1) stood down the Delaware River on 6 August 1944, bound for Hampton Roads, escorted by Simpson (DD-221) and Broome (DD-210). She then conducted an intensive shakedown, first in Chesapeake Bay and then in the Gulf of Paria, off Trinidad, British West Indies, escorted by Bainbridge (DD-246) and Decatur (DD-341). Steaming via Annapolis, Md., and Norfolk, USS Alaska returned to the Philadelphia Navy Yard, where the large cruiser underwent changes and alterations to her fire control suite: the fitting of four Mk. 57 directors for her five-inch battery. Placed in inactive status, "in commission, in reserve" at Bayonne, on 13 August 1946, USS Alaska (CB-1) was ultimately placed out of commission, in reserve, on 17 February 1947. The large cruiser never returned to active duty. Her name struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 June 1960, the ship was sold on 30 June 1960 to the Lipsett Division of Luria Brothers of New York City, to be broken up for scrap. USS Alaska (CB-1) was awarded three battle stars for her World War II service.

I agree. Most of the super cruisers are more cruiser than battleships. But I think that the only one that is not in the cruiser area is the Siegfried. It’s a tier 7 battleship with a squishy nose.

I still struggle with radar sometimes. I either forget the enemy ship has a radar or I forget the range. There is a lot you have to keep in mind as a destroyer player and its easy at least for me to forget something occasionally and make a mistake. That being said I don't know what that Shima was doing Almost all high tier American cruisers you will run into have like a 9 to 10km radar so its not hard to remember that.

You are correct. Battle Cruiser was never a designation given to these ships in the US Navy. Rather than USS Alaska being a smaller Iowa class, she was actually more of a large Baltimore class cruiser.

Imagine battleship aspects as a triangle, “firepower” “protection” “speed”, a battleship attempts to balance these or trade one aspect for another, a battleship will GENERALLY trade speed for protection and/or firepower, a battlecruiser will GENERALLY trade protection for speed, for instance the Amagi class battle cruiser (designed but not completed as a BC) had 9.8” of belt and 16” guns and predicted 30kts, where as the Colorado class had up to 16” of belt 16” guns but could only achieve 21kts. The big difference between BCs and super heavy cruisers like Alaska and Guam was that BCs still carried battleship caliber guns whereas Alaska only had 12” guns

The Alaska is a nice cruiser. I think the term you were looking for was "pocket battleship" to better describe a battle cruiser - it's what the allies dubbed German ships like Graff spree and shcarnhorst.

No Scharnhorst wasn't called that. It's an actual Battlecruiser. Graf Spee, Deutschland and apparently Admiral Scheer were the only 3 with that nickname because they were smaller than your average battlecruiser but had battleship caliber guns.

I love winning fights like that its so satisfying. Reminds me of when I did something similar against a Constellation in my New Orleans. As long as you know your ship and know your enemies ship you can pull of some crazy things in this game.

I don’t think the navy considered calling the Alaska a “Super cruiser “ they always called such ships like the Alaska a Battle Cruiser because of the battleship guns with a cruiser Hall just bigger and better armor to absorb the recoil of the main guns However the navy thought the title of Battle cruiser was to Original suppose that’s why they dismissed the idea of calling it that so they called it for what it was a heavy Cruiser because it made sense it was heavy and it was a cruiser but regardless of its title it was one of the best ships of its time no doubt

The US navy never technically had a battlecruiser the closest we came was the USS Lexington which was originally supposed to be built like our in game constellation but was changed to an aircraft carrier due to naval treaties.. However Alaska was considered a Super Cruiser due to her size and firepower she wasn't quite a Battlecruiser but much larger than a typical heavy cruiser

Normally when I think super cruiser I think about those super ships on the PC that’s just my opinion on what Super Cruisers would look like personally paper ships that where planned but never made but ofc it could go ether way depending on witch way you look at it

A battle cruiser is the size of a battleship with guns larger than 305mm guns. (Most battle cruisers have around 380-406mm guns(Such as hood, Repulse, Amagi, Kaga, Lexington, etc etc) but has weaker armor for more speed

Alaska would absolutely shred a Tirpitz.. Remember Alaska has nasty AP Pen angles as well as being incredibly tanky and reloads about twice as fast as a tirpitz...

I never had much luck in the super cruiser class and always just went with old faithful (Des Moines) but after the buff of both the Stalingrad and Alaska these things are absolute beasts!! Almost seems unfair now 😅 unless you broadside it. I still always revert to my Des Moines, but I never take these two super cruisers for granted now. When I'm playing DD I spam the wheel to get rid of these ships first! Stalingrad has 20 sec radar from 11.7KM and Alaska has 30 sec radar from 9.0KM. GG Spartan
