Ruari Fairbairns is the founder of One Year No Beer, an initiative that provides challenges, coaching programmes, courses and support to anyone who's looking to change their relationship with alcohol. OYNB uses cutting-edge behaviour change science, a robust technology platform and has a highly engaged community. In this episode, Ruari shares the personal experiences that led him to question his relationship with alcohol and how reducing alcohol intake has changed his life.
They discuss the ways in which alcohol negatively impacts our lives and why we should all try to cut down on our consumption. Ruari breaks down and explains the myths behind alcohol like “red wine is good for you” and “a beer at the end of the day will help you relax”. With a wealth of insights, he discusses the pervasive effects of peer pressure and what we can all do to prevent it.
Ruari explores the impact of Covid-19 on alcohol consumption, revealing a staggering 20% increase in the United States. The conversation touches on the psychological and tribal aspects of alcohol consumption, and Ruari explores alternative tools we can utilise to manage stress effectively. Ruari offers practical insights on preventing alcohol abuse to ensure individuals never reach a breaking point.

Love this. I did a 90 day break. Went to the Calcutta Cup at Twickenham right in the middle of the programme. We lost the game. I have been before many times. First time sober. Best ever experience I've had there despite losing, being surrounded by Jocks and not drinking! Say no more.

One thing not talked about - and I think important to interject - are substances in diet that neutralize alcohol, I live in Japan a very alcohol based culture so much so they offer sake rice wine to the gods. Ukon - tumeric - which I grow on my farm detoxes alcohol, umeboshi, miso all break it down in the body to safe levels. There's a flipside that Western cultures have no understanding of as their diets are so unhealthy. Just my viewpoint as sake is so good for you, it's alcohol yet packed with amino acids so beneficial for health. They've drank it for thousands of years.

@bonsummers2657 0 seconds ago False. Prudent consumption is very healthy. Over consumption is not. Some consumption is healthy. I'm speaking beer, wine, and liquor. Quality matters. Age matters. Individual circumstances matter.

Haven't watched this, so apologies for jumping the gun; maybe there is much more nuance than the title suggests. But I haven't drank for 3 years--I wasn't a big drinker anyway but I still stopped--it hasn't given me an edge at all. I'm still tired when I wake up, I'm still dehydrated if I didn't drink enough the day before. I think the only way quitting booze could 'give you the edge' is if you weren't previously able to control your drinking AT ALL.
