Off-topic but inspiring: I've been baking fresh-milled bread a LOT especially since getting my grain mill the first of the year and shared with my becoming-crippled 69-year-old roommate about the God-given nutrition available in whole grains and not hardly at all in store bought breads, cereals, etc. She has been eating more and more fresh-milled breads and cookies, etc. I have been baking for almost a month now. She has a long way to go, BUT she told me yesterday that this week is the first time she has been able to go without her walker when in the house! Now she is going to be upping the percentage of whole grain foods in her diet. I was getting very concerned about her because by fall of 2023 it was not clear how much longer she would even be able to stand up! THANK YOU, JESUS...!!!

We are wheat farmers in the Texas panhandle and NEVER use glyphosate as a dessicant. When i asked hubby about it, he said he didn’t know anyone who does that. If you understand the season of wheat harvest in the US, it’s during the heat of the summer, not a time you would need a dessicant to “dry down” the crop. It’s bone dry already!! Maybe it’s done in Canada like you mentioned where the growing season is short and it’s more wet during harvest. I am not sure where this myth came from that all wheat is sprayed with glyphosate before harvest. It’s just not true!

I’m a Midwest girl(Iowa) born and raised on a farm. Daughter of a crop farmer and now wife of a crop farmer and I can tell you around here everyone uses(abuses) the chemical approach to farming. Lots and lots of glyphosate and now that it’s getting frowned upon by a larger number of people after all these years the are using more and more other chemicals like Dicamba. Obviously not all people are this way but most farmers just want to do the “norm”. Whatever they are told by their neighbors and agronomist to do, they do. Like most jobs bottom line is profit and they are in a system that has them doing things and ignoring the consequences in order to keep their lives as farmers. They stick together for the most part on how “they know how to grow crops”and that “this is the only way to get a good harvest”. Now it’s all they know. They are disconnected from the past generations of growing without chemicals and they are entrenched in a system that repeats the same propaganda to them over and over again. It’s very frustrating especially that around here they get pumped up in the ego about how they are “feeding the world” yet really the corn and soybeans go to corn syrup (not food),fuel, and feeding cattle a really crap diet. Trust me I KNOW the need for farming and farmers but the majority are not thinking about growing a nourishing food when they are farming. To be fair I’m speaking of corn and soybeans, not wheat. I do think that Midwest is probably the 30% of the wheat that is sprayed with it as desiccant just because of our climate and trying to get a double crop in. Ritz crackers I believe test higher than almost any food for glyphosate. That being said they use many other equal or worse chemicals also our system is broke and we need a turn around.

Yes, thank-you. I always appreciate getting firsthand perspective from farmers. It's a sad truth. Modern farming is broken. Farmers these days don't seem interested in biblical principles of health and stewardship, only in the bottom line.

@@GrainsandGrit I would say there are more livestock farmers that “care” about more than bottom line than there are crop farmers. That being said, caring doesn’t mean understanding or admitting bad practice. We don’t know until we know but definitely some choose not to think about it even if they are capable of seeing and knowing what harmful things they are doing. You might want to research cotton crops as well. I live in Alabama where cotton is grown (and wheat) and they definitely spray it with a chemical called a defoliant. It takes the leaves off the cotton plant, so all is left is the cotton fruit(?). I don’t know if it hangs around the ground but if they are planting by crop rotation on fields previously sprayed with it, it might mean trouble. I know I get sick if I’m near the crops that have been sprayed.

This is a big country and there are a lot of variables on where to find grains at a good price. For those who live in a state where they have Natural Grocers (aka Natural Grocers Vitamin Cottage), they are a great place to order big bags of wheat -- with limitations. For instance they do not carry soft white wheat at all. The last time I laid out $100 for grains I saved $60 by ordering through them rather than Amazon. There is another health-food savvy "food coop" in our area that may have things we can't get at Natural Grocers, but although we can find it easily it is further than we like to drive. We may make an exception if we can pick up grains we cannot get at Natural Grocers. I was SO relieved when I found out there were places I could order the grain here in town without having to pay shipping.
