Only ONE thing matters: *price.* FTFY. If you're chasing 16% year-over-year performance gains, I'm jealous of your disposable income. I have a 6800U (Zen3+) in my "laptop" and don't see needing to upgrade any time soon. But I just upgraded my couch gaming PC from a 3400G to a 7840HS (Zen4) because the price of the barebones was *stupid good* and actually _below_ my price range.

@@Jabid21 The resale value for macs isn't as great as you might think. Plus, _even Apple_ says the difference between a 2020 M1 MBA and a 2024 M3 model is less than 60%, which sounds like a lot, but most use-cases on Apple laptops aren't bottlenecked by the CPU/GPU so much as lack of RAM and SSD (which makes it all the more egregious that Apple will still sell you a *non-upgradeable* 8GB/256GB configuration).

Without using a multiplier such as PCH, PCI lanes are limited due to pin count and IO architecture of AM4/5. Want more then its going to cost you, higher pin count and a more EPYC server/Thread Ripper style design, so get your cash out for that. 24x PCIe-5 lanes to the CPU is huge, Motherboard designs could halve them to PCIe-4 and double the lanes, but they don't do that, although some sort of have done before to get more M.2 interfaces on the MB.

i recently got a 7950X3D for $375, so I do not need to upgrade to the 9950X3D. The only issue is the number of PCI-E lanes. I can either do x16+x4+x4+x4 (GPU + 3 NVMEs) and have 4 SATA ports, or have x16+x4+x4+x4+x4 (GPU + 4 NVMEs) and have 2 SATA ports. For some reason I can't find benchmarks between 2400MHz and anything else around it. I see 2133 pitted against 2666 all the time but that's not a fair comparison when 2400 exists. BTW-yes, I'm still going with that Bristol Ridge FC8 Alpha plan. I know, it's not gonna be much better than my i7 620m, but it's the form factor that allows me the flexibility. Lately I ask myself one question when it comes to considering hardware for building a computer. Can I effectively still run it with Windows 10 and still do all the things I'm doing now with it? If the answer is no (aka all the newer Intel and AMD CPUs like this one) then I simply stick to older hardware that will still run effectively on 10 because I find Windows 11 to be even more hot garbage then Windows 10 and if the software I use still let me use it on Windows 7 I would still be using that instead. I really don't care how powerful this new hardware is if I'm forced to use it under a version of Windows that has me wondering if drilling a hole in my head wouldn't be less painful then dealing with it. I really need to look in to moving to Linux but that is another headache I'll save for a later date and chances are I might find myself still needing to use Windows for something even in a VM from time to time even if I did move to Linux. Also if I never hear the term "AI" again I would be very happy with how it's being used these days and the last thing I want is an "AI" system running on my local machine let alone having my data "in the cloud" to process.

If there’s a 10800GX3D with RDNA5 Radeon integrated graphics (and PCIE lane speeds and counts on par with the 9000 series unlike how the 8000 series has so much less than the 7000 series) I might consider the upgrade

9600X looks like a good OC option. You could just overclock it an extra 0.1ghz and you'll be good to go.

Isn't a 7800x3d objectively better? Or do you need the productivity/gaming balance

@@the_golden_s5682 i, at least, need the cores, case i virtualize a lot. i am running a few VMs with different applications, cause i use linux and some programs just dont run through compatibility layers.

The best thing about these incremental improvements-especially if you couldn't give a kumquat about "AI ready" capabilities-is that they're bringing down the price of older stock. The 7900X3D is a beast, and if you can pick it up at a discount, it'll probably last you up through AM6.
@Airbigbawls
@Airbigbawls Ай бұрын
@@the_golden_s5682 It is objectively better but I want more cores for productivity work like making games and coding, otherwise I wouldn't even go for a 7800x3d and just get something even cheaper.

Can they get the 9950X3D right? My dream CPU if they can (9800X3D might also be interesting). I'm not as interested in the normal stack. The 9950X might tempt me if the X3D is much more than it should be in terms of pricing. Anyone who upgraded in the last 2-3 years might be able to HODL until the last or a later gen though. If it's not major I might go for GPU upgrade again. My CPU is often bored. Will see when we have reviews and benchmarks.

Do we really need higher benchmarks? Shouldn't we be leaning into lower power draw and greater stability. Or, maybe keep the monsters in one group and make a new line up that focuses on efficiency.
