I recently travelled to the states and told everybody who talked travel with me, that "I really needed to come. Had to for reasons. Its not like I want to come to this lawless, dangerous country." With the brutal murder rate, where people can legally shoot you for taken a piss on their hedge at night, where everybody´s armed and dangerous, where every hundreth citizen is incarcerated and police regularly are caught covering up murder and smearing people. Not to mention that most of your police look like military swat teams, and there are cameras everywhere. And I know dozens of secret organizations are tracing every step I do while in the US. And the military suffer a quasi-religious reverence for killing millions of brown people who would never ever have been a risk to the US in general. Or where falling down the stairs can cost me several thousand dollars in a moment. Or where more people than anywhere else in the world decide to run amok and kill dozens of people. Or some salad of related points. . Most reacted ..irritated. I wasnt preaching, mind you - I simply made a game out of telling people for my whole time there why its really frightening to visit the US and why. Had this talk with - lets say ten people. One woman startet crying. Several men snappped. Most simply couldnt believe somebody saying "Ugh, I really dont wanna come to the US because X" , Even if X was quite indisputably true. I felt like in a police state, to be truthful.

@urockit20116 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on who you talk to. History has a funny way of repeating itself. Many Brits back in the day (e.g. 70 years ago) believed they were the best. But like Jim said, every empire crumbles down. America is falling (or at least is very evident now that it's a falling "empire"), and I think a lot of the educated younger folks understand that. Much like the way many middle aged brits will make fun of their own country. Additionally, I think the "babying" occurs at a more insidious and deeper level: along with the media, it starts in primary school. Here in the US, we're told starting from preschool about how great this country is. Every. Year. When I was younger, we were made to say the pledge of allegiance every morning before we began our day. A lot of us heard many falsehoods about history--or at least watered down versions of it--that paint America as heroes to the world. That's slowly (too slowly) changing though in more educated parts of the US. The pledge of allegiance isn't said in classrooms anymore (according to my family members in grade school). Yet, many Americans are still in a deep state of denial. We deny the fact that we're failing in education, health, and economic equality. I pray that we own up to our history and our faults so we can actually change things around here and be the country we so often pretend to be. But again, as a dual citizen, I may have a slightly different perspective...

Chalky: The US is not the best on many metrics. Several countries beat the US in areas such as education, life expectancy, healthcare, and others. It's hard to claim the entire US does try to fix things when our current administration is very much doing the opposite. And it's not like people are saying we don't have any problems, it's a mindset issue. When you constantly tell yourself that you are the best, it will instill complacency. It's common for people to overcompensate and mess up when they get over confident. Besides, saying that the US is the best is just not correct. It's better to be more realistic. Oh and uh...maybe don't keep spreading nonsense like "blacks" killing each other at some outrageous rate. As someone who's studied these things in college, I can tell you that graphic is absurdly wrong. Matt: What does that really have to do with this? Yeah, "best" isn't the same as "perfect", but how would you even decide what counts as "perfect" in these areas? How would a country have "perfect education"? Or how about "perfect life expectancy"? So really, you're just missing the point. Thinking yourself the best (especially when you're not) doesn't mean you think yourself perfect, but it creates a sense of complacency, where you can easily rest on your laurels and let yourself slip. Perhaps you ought to learn a little nuance.

The countries with the truly highest standard of living are the ones where the distance between the poor and the rich is the smallest. Like Switzerland and Norway for example. Even the "poor" people there are well off by most standards. In America the difference is more extreme. Sure, you can be super rich there, but the poor ones are almost at third world levels. I'd rather pay a bit more taxes to ensure that most of my fellow countrymen have a decent education, healthcare, and all other things to keep a population happy and thriving, and thus less crime ridden. It just simply makes it a nicer place to live. Also a bit of Janteloven (The Law of Jante, look it up) really would help the American mindset to achieve this.

Im american, I know I am only 14, but im already having negative feelings towards my own country. We are very obsessed with calling ourselves the best in the world LITERALLY because we won a couple wars and gained freedom, we act like nobody has ever thrown a revolution and gained freedom. America’s education is terrible. We have the same school system from the 1850’s. Yes, many people in America are amazing people, but online i have met amazing people too from India, Britain, India, and Ireland. They seem to have negative opinions of us because of how we think. America is not the best, and it probably will not be for a very long time. The people here are very ignorant. Protesting because a cop killed a black man. They forget many white people have been killed as well, I mean American citizens are protesting the quarantine! Anyway, I have very negative opinions on America and the way it is ran.
@ErickBlessed4 жыл бұрын
Don't get depressed bro, you are just 14 and i'm sure you'll be part of a great future for your country. Actually, what it's happening to your country right now is viewed with respect by us in Europe, of course we condemn violence and looting, but it's not just a protest for a black man killed by a cop. 2 days ago another black man was also killed like a dog by another cop, obviously there are also whites who die (as in the siege of Waco, ruby, etc.), But the reason for this protest is that the your country is racist from its roots, and this requires to be changed drastically and definitively
@Unheilig_4real4 жыл бұрын
I like your way of thinking, to question commen opinions at 14 is pretty impressive, and yes i also think its not about racism its a capitalistic system problem because the poor are held down. If that would change, everything would change. Its just false to hide the real problem behind the racist sign.
