Some further thoughts: - A lot of people misinterpret the career potential of STEM disciplines. In terms of compensation and variety of jobs available, it's actually in the T (technology) and the E (engineering) where the bulk of lucrative jobs are. As valuable as natural sciences and mathematics are, they aren't as versatile as career options, and generally get lower compensation. - People who have interest in disparate engineering specialties can become really successful professionals if they figure out how to combine or bridge them. This is a great option for people who like multiple things but can't pick between them. It can even be with non-engineering disciplines! - Contrary to a lot of other degrees, engineering degrees tend to have very straightforward linkages between the degrees and the matching jobs. It's a heavily regulated profession, requiring lots of technical certifications (continued education, professional licenses, graduate degrees, and so on). This provides a lot of job security, which may be harder to attain with other degrees and disciplines. - Once attaining the required experience, it's possible to establish really successful businesses related to engineering products or services. - Engineering has a pretty broad potential within the public sector, which can offer a less hectic alternative to private sector jobs. There's all sorts of engineering positions related to infrastructure / public works, the military, designing highly specialized products for government-specific applications, and even in setting up the regulatory regime to be enacted into law.

For me #8 is key -- knowing that I'm capable of learning *anything* I need or want to is an amazing feeling.

This degree costed me my mental health! I think that, back in 2018, before I started studying at the university, I was more capable of being a competent programmer than I am now. At least, back in 2018, I didn't have to take Risperidone, Biperiden and Alprazolam, and I had a lot more enthusiasm. Corporations probably have more use of an enthusiastic 18-year-old than of a Bachelor of Computer Engineering who is drinking Risperidone.
