Hi Maddy, environmental engineer here. I'm glad you made this video because I've always wondered how different environmental engineers were from environmental scientists. It's good to hear from someone who actually graduated with a degree from environmental science rather than guessing and googling what they actually do. Keep up the good work! 😃

Your videos are so valuable! Thank you for putting these out, hopefully, they help people who want to use their careers to help the planet find their way. I don't have an environmental science degree but I work on environmental education, direct stewardship, biodiversity, and communication and I think there is a lot of pathways to contribute to this field outside of some of the career paths I have seen you propose in your videos. Are you open to chatting about those other paths to a career in ecology? (my educational background is in fine arts btw)

wow your work sounds really cool! i would be very interested in chatting and learning how you broke into the environmental space with a background in fine arts :)

Great video. I am a new subscriber to your channel. I work in logistics and am finishing a degree in environmental science with a GIS concentration. Your channel is a jewel.

Thank you very much for this video! Very informative. I'm just now getting into my educational phase after being in the military for the better part of a decade, and environmental sciences has always been something I've been very interested in, specifically on the policy/law side. I'm afraid that I'd be starting late (currently 32). Do you think it would be difficult to transition into this career with little starting experience at my age? I have marketable skills outside of what my educational goals might be, so I'm not entirely worried about that, I'm just interested in hearing what your thoughts might be on someone starting (realistically at 36/37).

Thank you for reaching out! I don't think it is too late at all, especially since you already have marketable skills you can leverage during the application process. I will say that law does take more effort to get into but policy jobs would be a great start! I also recently published a video on making that transition and it dives into more detail than what i can put in this comments field :)

Hello! This video was extremely helpful on all fronts! Not only did I learn more about the field from you, but you asked questions that got me thinking about what I really want! I wanna know, what are your opinions about the env science track vs. the natural resource conservation track? Currently trying to think through this comparison.
@SustainabilityWithMaddy
@SustainabilityWithMaddy Ай бұрын
I am glad it was so helpful! They are pretty similar, and you can likely get the same job with either track. If you want to stay in academia or research, I would go natural resources conservation. If you want to go into consulting, I would go the environmental science track!

The job market for everyone is honestly pretty awful, to the point where it’s made many news headlines. Many business and computer science graduates are struggling just as much, which is crazy because these are two of the professions that just 5 years ago were considered ‘safe.’ In my area, environmental scientists are in very high demand statistically (this is in FL too, so I image it’s less demand than California and other blue states). However, most jobs require the ‘1-3 years experience.’ So I’m afraid we all have to suck up the unpaid internship during uni and poor paying first job. At the very least we are actually doing something fulfilling guys. IMO better to struggle for those two years than be stuck in something we hate for LIFE. Fulfillment > 200k a year salary in New York City IMO.

This is a really good point, and you're right that it does highly depend on location. I've found that even if jobs list the "1-3 years", sometimes they'll take new grads ;) Good luck out there!

Hi! I would recommend watching my “Guide to Becoming an Environmental Scientist” video, but there is a projected 6% job outlook over the next 10 years, and a pretty decent salary!

That is a great question and a common concern! The job outlook for environmental science is highs than average and the pay depends on the industry! If you are worried about pay I would recommend going into environmental consulting!
