Are you lying to people when you wear a watch that looks like another? Well, that all depends, now, doesn't it? In this episode I tell the story of a misidentification that was never meant to happen, or was it? And while I'm at it, I will share my thoughts on the Pagani Design PD-1701 version 3.

If I, at any point in my life, think that a plastic, genuine, twice as expensive moonswatch with WR3bar is better than a full metal ‘‘homage‘‘, I‘d admit myself to a psychward.

I told an Omega-snob friend of mine I was thinking about a Moonswatch, just because It would cheese people off, he about lost it. I was like, "Show me on the doll where the Moonswatch hurt you." :D Then I discovered the Pagani, and I told Swatchmega to take a hike. :)

The other "ethical" elephant in the room that wasn't directly discussed is what watch manufacturers like Rolex and Omega are doing by asking the kinds of prices they are for their watches. Several hundred more than for a Pagani? Sure all day long. But several thousand more? They must think we just fell off the turnip wagon.

I've been saying that for a while now. I think overcharging for your items is about as unethical as copying someone else's design. It's just that we've learned to accept how these companies overcharge, and that's what gives them the power to do so. Not saying an homage is a real alternative to the original, but I think you get the point.c

What's ironic is that in 1969, an Omega Watch was "expensive" but not luxurious. An actual military member could afford one. Adjusted for inflation, the Speedmaster was about $1100. Omega is forcing you to pay 7x premium to pay for their marketing materials. But Pagani Design is unethical for giving you an accurate timepiece with a sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, stainless steel bracelet and case for under $100. Ok....

I completely agree with your statements. I have always collected watches, however having 2 daughters in college has limited my budget. I own several Pagani design watches including the speedy homage and I think for me the quality, build and finish is perfect. I did recently purchase a San Martin SN0-17 (Rolex Sub homage) and I have had people stop me at the gym and inquire. At the end of the day you have to decide what is best for you. Keep up the good content!

I only own a few mid- or high-end watches, and they were all either gifts or inheritances. Most of the contents of my watch drawer are Casio and Timex, and I get plenty of "Oooh nice watch!" remarks from people. I tend to keep my watch buys as far under a C-note as I can manage, and I have a lot of fun bargain-hunting. :D I even managed to quell my slide-rule-bezel obsession for $50 (Casio MTD4500 if you're interested, half the cost of the Edifice and I think nicer looking).

Good video about the topic! I have just received my Pagani Speedmaster homage a couple of days ago. After all the hype from everyone I had to get one. Very cheap during the 11.11 sales. I must say I am dissapointed. Two weeks earlier I received a Heuer Monaco homage and I like that one so much more. Strangely I only see a couple of vids reviewing the Monaco homage. Would like to see more. I think I will give this Pagani away and order another colorway. Then again perhaps the speedmaster homage will grow on me still. I'm really glad I'm not spending thousands on watches I might not like after all. And the ones I do like are really great for their price.

Your very last point, the conversation part: 100% agreed!!!! That's almost spot on my experience over the last 2 years wearing homage watches by Pagani Design (and their sub brands, respectively). As you said, I just DON'T have the money to afford all those legendary timepieces, but really enjoy their design. Cue the chinese and their outstanding craftsmanship, paired with ridiculously low asking prices. I coudn't be happier with my little collection, consisting of Submariner, Datejust, Speedmaster and Richard Mille homages. And the best part: They are a great conversation starter!

The Pagani Design PD-1701 really angers me, but not for the reasons you might think. What angers me is that for around $100.00, I get a 316L Stainless Steel Bracelet, Stainless Steel case, sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, and a Seiko VK63 Mechaquartz movement. But Omega/Swatch group expects me to pay $260.00 for a plastic watch with plastic crystal, a cheap strap, to get the official Omega "badge". The quality of the movement and the fit in the finish of the MoonSwatch is laughable. The crystal will scratch if you breathe on it wrong, and in some colorways, the color of the watch case bleeds into your skin. Also changing straps is almost impossible without risking damage to the watch case. So somehow in the eyes of some watch snobs, it's awful that I purchase what is essentially a stainless steel $100.00 Seiko because it is an homage, but Omega/Swatch can charge me 2.5x the price for a cheap plastic toy watch that looks more at home in a happy meal than on my wrist. I have a Bulova Lunar Pilot as my "moon watch". It ticks all the checkboxes including authentic lunar pedigree at 1/10th the cost of a Speedmaster. What it lacks is water resistance. So for a hundred dollars I bought the PD-1701 to wear places I would never wear my Lunar Pilot (like in the pool), let alone an actual $5000+ Speedmaster.

I've had my Pagani Speedmaster for 5 months now and, while it hasn't seen much wrist time I think it's a good watch. I just don't like a few things: no AR coating, sharp edges especially on the bracelet, and Pagani is known for copying luxury watches. That's their reputation. But overall, it's a good-looking watch that should let people know you have good taste.

I'm a watch enthusiast but I haven't been stuck on the internet the past few years so I wasn't aware of Pagani as a brand until fairly recently. And in casual conversation it can be difficult to ascertain all details of a watch that someone is wearing. I always thought a homage watch was too close to being a fake for me, even if it clearly has a different brand name on it. The watch industry has invented the "homage" name to make this more acceptable. And in the case of the Rolex Submariner it seems that most watch companies have borrowed styling cues from this at one time or another, even to the point of making very close homages to it. This is a difficult concept to explain to someone who isn't a watch enthusiast, they are going to think a fake is a fake and that's it. I was in a jewelry store waiting to pick up some jewelry that had been repaired, the lady next to me had brought in a Rolex submariner for something and I talked to her about it briefly. I was wearing a Sandoz submariner, a homage. She asked me how I liked mine and I had to deflect the question since I wasn't rearing a Rolex. I've owned a lot of homages but these days I tend to only buy ones that are not identical to the real thing. For instance I had a Steinhart sub with a blue dial, not a copy of the Rolex because Rolex didn't make a blue dial. And now I have a Steinhart that is all black, Rolex doesn't make one of those either. I've looked at the Pagani Speedmaster but if I bought one I would again lean towards one with a different dial color than black so it wouldn't look like a copy of the Speedmaster. My exception to this would be a homage of a watch that wasn't manufactured anymore, if there was one of those that I wanted. Also there are styles that have become very generic such as Fliegers, I don't mind wearing a cheap Flieger that looks very similar to a Stowa or IWC.

IMHO the homages are absolutely ethical since Pagani put clearly its name on the sphere and makes some subtle differences from the Speedmaster. What is not ethical is marketing that Omega did around its most historical piece. In the middle 60s NASA purchased in Houston some AFFORDABLE watches with chronographs for his manned Apollo missions. After some tests, the Speedmaster was selected. The plexiglass cover was one of the secrets of success since mineral crystal braked at very low temperatures because contraction. Nowadays, the same watch coast 4 times the mean monthly salary in Spain, without any significant modification. For me, the real beauty of the Speedmaster was its clean design, legible sphere and well designed case. I purchase the Pagani 1701 v3 for daily use without stress of scratches and degradation of my Speedmaster witch I use in rare occasions. Perhaps hands on it will looks odd, I don’t know. It will arrive on Fryday, but anyway I think is a good try from Pagani. Speedmaster is a beautiful piece that merits a reproduction as many paint lovers have “Starry Night” from Van Gogh in their homes…

I think the watch with the most attractive dial I own is a Pagani Design 1733. I liked it so much that I decided to buy a second one with a different color dial, but they really screwed that up and sent it to Alaska, and I’ve never received it. They did refund my money though, but I was really looking forward to having that one. I’ll probably try ordering it again, but at that time I decided to get another one I had my eye on from Bliger. It is an Explorer homage with a nice red second hand. It has a Seiko movement and is accurate to within about 8 seconds a day. The biggest question I’d have is what makes a Rolex so special that they are charging many thousands of dollars for them if they don’t look or perform much better than my Pagani Design or my Bliger? Before I’d spend that kind of money on a watch though, I’d have to look out my window and see a nice big pontoon boat outfitted for fishing sitting out there lol. Until then, I’ll enjoy my humble homage collection.

I have no issue with Pagani Designs, but let's not lie about them "paying tribute" to a speedmaster or any other model. The r&d has been done and Pagani can manufacture a reasonable clone, that they know the market likes, at a good price. I do appreciate the irony of the stainless steel moonswatch though. That's not a homage, that's an upgrade. 👍

Nice vid, and you are absolutely right, a replica is made to deceive and if it is bought to then be use to sell as the real thing, then we all know that is a crime. Homages depending how they are made, they can as close to the original designs for which we will consider "copies" to some that use some queues from the originals to look like but not quite like the originals. I have no issues with the Chinese homage watches, they offer a lot of value for the money you pay. When leaving politics outside of the equation, the people who work making them, that is all they are, people, they go to work to provide for their families, and give us a decent product. When you thing about it, the big name companies don't even give you some of the materials you are getting on most homages. Not all Seikos, Citizens, Bulovas and middle tier watch companies give you saphire cristals or ceramic bezels, with solid end links or screws in the bracelets. You have to go higher in the money bracket to get some of those features, and you don't get them all either. Another things is, that even the big name companies have "copied" from each other, if you go back and check you can find models from Rolex copied by Bulova, Seiko, Citizen, even names like Omega, Tag Huer and others have copied from each other, but they get a "passed", I guess because we feel is okay for them to do that, but we know is not. Anyway, again, nice vid and enjoy your homages.

Not everyone wants a ceramic bezel, especially if they're buying a reissue of a classic watch. A ceramic bezel on a Willard looks incorrect. Most of the homages are made by machines; very few people factor into the equation. And if they do, they're chinese slave laborers.

Same people who gatekeep will give a hypocritical speech on how cost doesn't matter, it's about the piece but 404s when someone actually loves their Invicta. Going to an AD for a two year waiting list and being forced to buy jewelry for the same price of the watch before purchase doesn't make the watch more valuable, it makes you a sucker for brand exclusivity marketing.

funny thing, I have never bought a homage watch, because I don't have the money to buy the real thing. I always buy homage watches because they usually are the best specification watches for the money. And if specification is what you want, sadly, homages are almost the only option for under 100 moneys. But I would not pay much more than a 100 for a homage, because 100+ is the point where you can start finding something unique while having those good specifications. Love your accent.

I never thought it would happen, given all the negativity towards Pagani Design, but i am now the owner of 3 daytona homages, 1 datejust homage, 1 prx chrono homage, 1 62mas homage, and the pt5000 airking homage. With the exception of the airking one, all of my pagani watches cost between $32-$41, all with the VK63 or NH35 movement. At this price, i dunno, but it seems that the value for money aspect becomes way more important and i completely forget they are homages. To me, the daytona homages don't even look like homages any more... i have got to appreciate the quality for the price i paid, and that automatically becomes the bragging right for me. I have, for some reason always hesitated at the speedy homage, firstly because i can't make up my mind on which colourway to get, but also, because it (only) costs between $70-100, it is more than double the price of my other paganis. I don't see what is significantly different in the watch matetials to warrant paying twice the price. If it was a $50 watch. I would buy it without thinking, or buy both colourways to mitigate the dilemma. To me, they have done a much better job than the moonswatch, and if you compare it to that watch rather than the omega, then i don't think it is a bad thing at all. I'd feel much happier wearing the 1701 than the moonswatch. If i had a real speedy, i'd still enjoy wearing the 1701, probably cos i'd feel less guilty wearing an imposter, but i'd also feel much less guilty if the 1701 got damaged compared to the speedy. Swings and roundabouts.

I understand the arguement against the homage. It is copying. However this arguement falls apart when you put omega and rolex watches next to each other. Take the speedmaster and the daytona. Sure there are a few subtle differences however these watches are the same design just with different pushers, hands and a few other details. Then take the moonswatch. A homage but a really cheap one. Umong other issues you have a fragile plastic case, crystal that scratches on the cardboard box it is supplied in and a strap that is substandard. The moonswatch costs more than double what the 1701 does for a fraction of the quality. If swatch who own Omega are going to make such a poor quality homage and charge silly money for it they can not get upset at the competition.

Everyone - every business - every Rock n Roll Band - every Artist - Every Watchmaker takes something from someone else wether they realise it consciously or not ! If you look at Art Deco style for example hundreds of thousands of manufacturers made numerous products that were of Art Deco Style . Everyone of those manufacturers were taking ideas from others . Rolex took style cues from the Art Deco movement in early designs ! So that said everyone copies to some degree . As long as it is not an exact copy with a registered name on it the smaller companies are just doing the same thing the bigger companies did back in the day ! Also the price disparity does not reflect the true value of many luxury watches . You can buy a top line hand made in house Grand Seiko , which technically & mechanically is a better watch than a Rolex it's just that Rolex has a perceived better luxury status but the Seiko costs less & is a better watch . So buy what your happy with & as long as it's not a 100% clone with a registered name ..... enjoy ! Have a great day 😃

Nice review.... I bought one myself, and I hate to say, I just don't like it. I think it's the cheap bracelet that I just don't like. Feels just flat out cheap as it is too light. I have some Orient watches, which are not high end watches by any means, and they just feel so much more substantial because of the bracelet. One interesting thing... do you know what Pagani means? It's Italian and Latin for Pagans (plural of pagan). That really rubs me the wrong way since that's not me. Most likley the last PD watch I get as I was not aware of that until I showed someone who was a Latin scholar and he informed me. :(

At the end of the day, I see this as a "Tribute Band". So long as the band isn't claiming to actually be Aerosmith or U2, then it doesn't bother me. Some fans will pay $500 a ticket to see those bands, while others will spend a $15 cover fee to see the tribute band at the local pub... As long as they are using their own branding and not claiming to BE an Omega or Rolex, no problem for me at all. Same applies to knives... or even now that Glock's patents expired and so you have plenty of glock clones on the market...

After catching the "Newman's Own" Daytona Pagani (bummer, did not come with salad dressing or pizza!), his Luna Pagani is next, in "original" Moon-watch black face trim! I like the V5 white face with black bezel, but the black one is what I saw as a kid in a 1969 Nat-Geo magazine ad for the Omega, and it is burned into my mind ... except I cannot justify 7 Kilo-bucks, after taking 4 years to pay off that much for my new-to-me hatch-back jalopy! They are now on sale occasionally for a tick over 60 bucks. THERE IS ONE NIGGLE about your video: Will you fellas forget about lume? Modern lume is nothing but a 5 minute gimmick, because it is not radio-active anymore, and that is a good thing! It is useless, because it will NOT glow all night, so why bother? A few generations of assembly workers in the early and up to mid 20th century ended up with cancer and early deaths because of radium lume-paint. The ladies were even licking their radium-soaked paint brushes to keep them pointy for fine detailing, and lost their jaws, true story there! That lume glowed for maybe 10 years until the paint was literally burnt, which is why those old dials and hands all looked brown, instead of greenish white, and then these watches were still radio-active. Tritium tubes are supposedly not dangerous, but are still radio-active, and are used only by commando-type unit militaries now, and they don't expect their soldiers to live forever, but charge into battle and die! (I can say that, as a veteran myself!) I would MUCH rather see high contrast hands in solid black on light dials, or solid white on dark dials, than silly lume strips in thin skeleton frames, that often make reading watches harder for aging eyes! The best example of such a white dial with pure black hands is the dirt simple and dirt cheap Casio MQ24-7B2. I can read mine in very dim light, when other watches need a flashlight! My Casio WaveCeptor WVA-M630D (Japanese domestic market import), also a white dial, has lumed hands, and there are times I hate it, because I can only read it in bright daylight outdoors! Inside, it is a royal pain, and even with the built in LED lamp it is difficult to read for me. If it did not have a niche as a reference watch for setting my others, I would have eBayed it already!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts in such a lengthy comment! Seriously! I appreciate the time you spent, along with your insight. I do understand where you’re coming from about the lume. However, there is a level of expectation with modern lume that we should have. Although not radioactive, it is better than nothing, unless, that is, it claims to be there and is worthless. On a side note, the history of modern watch luminescence is quite interesting. It was invented by a Japanese survivor of WW2.

lol “there’s a lot of controversy”. Honestly, what other people think or say has little bearing on what watch I buy and wear. People’s opinions on homage watches only matter if they matter to me. And they don’t. People who get uptight about my speedmaster homage are just secretly frustrated that I’m getting the same satisfaction from my 100 dollar watch as they are out of their 5000 dollar watch…

An hommage is when you take inspiration from something, think about the Tudor Black Bay Pro being an hommage to the Rolex Explorer. Nobody should wear jeans that aren't Levi's, because those are homage jeans, etc... that's part of my argument for homage watches. And anybody that makes an ethical argument about the labor, better not be wearing 99.5% of clothing brands which are made in literal sweatshops. The people that argue against homage watches all tend to have some stake in the game of protecting the big brands.

I have not ever purchased or worn a knock off, with the same branding. But the 'homage', where no great problem. That is not like music and notes, where finite number of note combinations. There are only so many combinations in the realm of reality, hence the inevitable comparison with the 'successful' brand. Here too, options. Not fooling anyone, and not trying.
