*** Tip: I used a claw foot wrench with a 1/4" ratchet to put that top bolt in for those that are struggling with this.*** I put this in my Excursion today! It was amazingly fast, harder to tell how good from the video but a huge improvement for mine. I believe I had an original starter (238K miles) if not it had at least 150k on it since I bought it and it must of had some high resistance as it was struggling to turn over. I cleaned the battery grounds, had new batteries and still was slow. Very happy with the PowerMaster.

The nice thing about the spacer plate is that if you remove it you can also use that same starter on a 6.9 or 7.3 idi

Put this starter on my 7.3 a few years ago. Already replacing. Didn’t last long. Been cranking slow for a while

It sounds like it was turning over just fine before, does being able to start it .5 seconds faster really that big a deal for you? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Some people decide to be predictive with their maintenance instead of corrective. The benefit to that is that you are less likely to get stranded somewhere.

I recommend the stock replacement from NAPA. And by the way; the stock starter IS a gear reduction unit. The gearset is planetary. Just changed ours out last Monday FOR FREE under NAPA's lifetime warranty. There is no starter that spins the engine any faster than NAPA's stock rebuild. VERY happy!
