I think seeing the Titus logo on the box is what drove people away. Even before they made Superman 64, they weren't exactly a high pedigree company.

This was one of my favorite games I stumbled across in my high school days of emulating every SNES game I could. The gameplay is indeed formulaic but Iittle things like the projectile and pogo attacks are satisfying, and the character designs are fun and lively. I remember loving the character designs all the dialog-free cutscenes and transitions too. Definitely will check out that manual translation, thanks for that.

Fun fact: Titus Interactive, the company that gave us this game, would later go on to make Superman 64. Ok, maybe that fact wasn't so fun after all.

Bob Plays actually Titus was just the publisher in US and Europe. The game was developed by Ascii, also responsible of a very late hidden gem of the ststem: Ganpuru/Gunsman Proof (Super Famicom only). My poor Ardy has nothing to do with that Superman crap! xD

Yeah, supposedly the dev team for Axelay split up not long after, so it's a shame a sequel never happened. For what it's worth I spotted several of the same staff members in the credits of Gradius Gaiden and Gungage two Konami action games on PS1

A few great SNES games I didnt know about until way later. Jelly Boy 2, Alcahest, Sky Blazer (Soul Blazer is great Zelda style game too), Wild Guns (more well known now), Go Go Ackman 1 through 3, Mickey To Donald Magical Adventure 3, Super Bomberman 3 through 5 (we only got 2 of them, great co op games too), Super Bonk, Super Double Dragon, Super Genjin 2 (Super Bonk 2) and Hagane. A number of these I played through on the channel but have finished all of them at some point. Arkanoid Doh It Again was a fun challenging game too. Dracula X is a great Castlevania game that doesnt get mentioned much. Its not Super Castlevania 4 but its still very good. Super Turrican 2 is one of the best action games of the 16 bit era in my opinion (aside from a shitty water maze in world 3). Did a tutorial playthrough of that one recently. The first one is good too but the second one is top tier. Some of these are japanese roms only but most have translated versions. A number of them dont really need translations to enjoy. Hagane I also have a tutorial up. Main issue I have with that game is edge jumping is really finnicky for some reason. Last boss really drives that point home. A great game somewhat reminiscent of Revenge Of Shinobi but not quite at that level.

@arbereshe Very true. For me its one of many reasons. Physical games take up a ton of space, degenerate over time (even with regular maintenance , which is ALOT of work with a large cartridge collection, disc rot, etc), and emulation allows the games to look better than the originals on a modern tv with any controller and save and load states to practice games as efficiently as possible. For those reasons and more I sold all my old games and only own games from the last few generations. Once emulation becomes great with those systems they will be sold too. The hyperspin interface is amazing and I can access games instantly one after the other, its better for recording, etc. I come from those eras and I have no nostalgia for making games look worse like they did back then.

You want a sequel to Ardy? Its Klanoa. This has always been a favorite SNES title of mine that "only I know about" back in the day, along with Wild Guns. It certainly does have a certain "feel" to it like you said that makes it not feel like a typical "mascot" style platformer in its presentation. It reminds me of many early 2D PS1 Japan-only side-scrollers in that regard. Another interesting tidbit, while not in high demand like say Hagane or Final Fight Guy, apparantly, according to some SNES price/rarity guides, the NTSC version of Ardy is one of the rarest games for the SNES as far as the actual number of copies that exist. I have even seen it been listed as high as the 2nd or 3rd rarest US title on some lists.(for games released normally in stores)

Mildly amusing story: I played this game to completion a couple of times as a kid. I remember enjoying it very much and being charmed by some of the visuals (the Island of Ruin and Pirate Ship levels comes to mind immediately). Years later, as a teen, I was telling my friend about how the SNES has a bunch of hidden gems and, with little to no actual memory of how it actually played, mentioned Ardy Lightfoot as an example. He googled the title and one of the first results was a forum post calling it "a barely playable piece of shit" and very angrily naming many of its problems. Needless to say, he didn't feel compelled to try it out after that.

I never played it, but wherever I saw it - presumably at Blockbuster, or the rental store in my local grocery chain - the art and screenshots were somehow tremendously evocative of this really specific sense of adventure, and watching the gameplay today brought a little of that back. Maybe a bit of the same sense of adventure and wonder I got, listening to my friend's sister describe what she was doing in Link's Awakening without ever having played a Zelda game before and trying to make sense of it. Anyway, maybe the level themes aren't super interesting, but goodness gracious those character sprites are absolutely gorgeous.

Always wanted to go back and finish it anyway, though. The presentation, soundtrack, character design and some of the gimmicks are great; if this had come out in the earlier 90s and had a sequel by the mid 90s we might've had a much more successful and well-known series on our hands.
