The comment about this being the 'most Amiga-iest game on SNES' really made me laugh, because it's so damn true! I grew up with an Amiga and looking back on it, everything has that utterly odd 'Euro-vibe' to it, that weird fucking bubble type face, those bizarre metallic Bitmap Brothers colour palettes... Jesus. I still have a soft spot for a lot of it, but it took me years to realise how surreal and potentially unsettling the European aesthetic and sensibility is in games like Shadow of the Beast, Gods or Another World - just like there's something *very* unsettling about Ralph Bakshi, Rene Laloux and Martin Rosen's films - as compared to the Japanese or American approach, which always had a more straightforward, clear kind of feeling that I still prefer. An interesting, less homogenous time in games for sure.
@cupriferouscatalyst37082 жыл бұрын
I definitely see what you mean, and I'm glad you put it into words because I've never been able to. Being in the middle of the two video game power producers, European games really had a strange familiar-yet-different vibe in the 80s and 90s, even to other Europeans because most of the games we played were either from the US or Japan.

This game is developed by System 3 and is known as Putty Moon in Japan. Published by U.S. Gold in the USA, and Varie (the same Varie from the Undercover Cops SNES port) in Japan. About Putty Squad: The game going to be released for the Amiga at first (it was bult for the Amiga 1200 in mind) but that version was never released and the SNES version was released instead. The Amiga version finally became a PS4 game in 2013 - which got versions for the 3DS in 2014 and the Switch in 2017.

_"Looks like an NES game at best"_ Huh? In no way does that looks like NES stuff, IMO. Perhaps closer to some of the very best graphics on Sega Master System, but slightly better. Anyway, nothing that stands out of the crowd for SNES - your ordinary "does its job but that's it" kind of graphics, without 'wow' factor or unique art style choices. Kind of reminds of Lost Vikings (but with the Amiga quirks like the fonts), except in that game the somewhat unremarkable graphics are redeemed by the puzzles and level design.

I find this a tough game to review. I don't think it's "ordinary" at all though, it's very unique. I think the odd sounds (especially some of the bizarre voice samples) have a certain charm; they're still an inside joke between me and a childhood friend. But I still pick this up from time to time, and I've never been able to tolerate playing it for more than maybe 15 minutes at a time. Never came close to beating it all these years. So I guess it's not actually that good of a game, but I feel like it's still worth experiencing for its uniqueness. I was not aware of the sequel, however, so thanks to SNES drunk for pointing that out!

This game is so close to me, it's my childhood. Every time I came back to this game it was just because of the Title Screen. It's so charming. And the sequel it's better in gameplay and it's more fun, but it's so different in some aspects like music and scenarios, because Super Putty is more like 80's atmosphere and music and in the other hand Putty Squad it's more based in War like enviroment and songs. I love this franchise and I think I'm one of the only ones who really likes it.
