I see it as a disability personally. I myself have it but I've always seen that no matter who you are or what you have not everyone and everything will conform to you and your needs so it's best to get help where you need it but not rely on it. It hurts worse when all your resources may be pulled out from under you if you aren't used to being able to adapt.

It's a little bit of both, but I see it mainly as just a difference. The barriers you speak of can be overcome if others are willing to cooperate. I was on SSDI for several years, but after my employer made certain accommodations (not just for me, but for everyone in my department), I was able to work sufficiently enough to be completely independent. As an Internet meme says, "Nobody suffers from Asperger's. We suffer from the way other people treat us."

Interesting question. For me its a difference. For society and the medics it might be a disability, but I don't see it that way.
