All of the cities you listed are ran by Democrats just putting that out there , instead of playing identity politics. How about run the cities the way they are supposed to be ran . Clean them up, strengthen police forces by funding them, have a policy for landlords to keep apartments, homes and businesses clean on the outside and enforce public intoxication laws. Oh yea have policies for entitlements you must work to get them and you are on them for a limited time . These cities are a sign of nothing but despotism that’s it .

I am originally from Maryland but traveled all over the world and all over the country. I love Baltimore, it is the first city I have lived that the people are totally real and down to earth. I lived in places like Richmond VA which its citizens think is some sort of cultural hub or bohemian destination, or phoenix AZ who thought their proximity to LA made them a trend setter. Baltimoreans are what you see is what you get, and I appreciate the reputation it has, if you want to live in some planned suburban subdivision where are the houses look the same and everyone guards the property line in their yard like it’s the DMZ we don’t want you in Baltimore.

There are actually a good chunk of very nice neighborhoods in Baltimore that no one ever seems to highlight. I've lived in Baltimore County all my life and am only just now at age 29 exploring the city and trying to see it in a different light. People only ever show the not so nice parts. We have areas that have been heavily gentrified and updated just like anywhere else.

@@lhoward1188 Well it really depends on your personality and your budget. I hear people really like the North Charles and Mount Vernon area and it's ok I guess depending on what you like. Very affordable. It's been becoming more trendy in the past few years.....but if you can afford a bit more, I'd strongly suggest south Baltimore. This includes Canton, Brewers Hill, Fells Point, Federal Hill, Riverside, and Locust Point. all of these places have their little differences, but they are all much more appealing than anything that you usually see about Baltimore. Comparable to any other city. And although some homes may not look great on the outside, many of them have been beautifully renovated on the inside.

I’ve worked in the worst parts of Baltimore and when I tell you it’s full of good people just trying to get by, I mean it. The city is SLOWLY gentrifying and building itself back up. I couldn’t have put it better🎯. During my formative years in Baltimore in the late 60s through the early 80s things were different. The streets were clean and I never felt danger even though it always existed as it does everywhere ,on the periphery where seedy establishments are. When big steel and other industrial employment opportunities were plenty, my dad, uncles and older cousins had plenty work until those industries left. Economic deprivation has the same effects and outcomes wherever that happens. Just look at the Appalachian people. When coal mining left, in came opioids and crime. Everywhere poverty is the norm, crime and drug abuse will follow as coping mechanisms. As you said, generally the hearts of the citizens are good.

And its because of the resources. They build up towns like towson Owings mills Bel-Air but then have no Money for Baltimore SMH Columbia has as alot of section-8 before ppl think its just rich ppl out there its not. Columbia ASSOCIATION owns 70 percent of the land. And they putin work to upkeep Columbia. The kids in Columbia have free gym club memberships and alot of activities to keep them busy. I grew up in Baltimore City on the Westside. We had great neighborhoods and neighbors. People respected each other. Kids were respectful. People were home owners that took pride in themselves, their homes, and surroundings. I have driven through those old neighborhoods from time to time they are a disgrace. It is really sad. Baltimore City has a bunch of do nothing politicians, with a little boy playing a major and people who really don't care about themselves anymore. The few that do care aren't heard and get lost in the madness.

@@oregontrail9067 More like Government neglect. Europeans do not neglect their cities, even conservative governments. European governments invest in their cities. For context, after our American cities burned down after riots in the 1960s, our government did not invest to rebuild them. Our government will help other countries in Europe rebuild after war but will not do the same for America. In this case, it was to teach Blacks a lesson for rioting. It was punishment for rioting.

@@oregontrail9067 Yes, individualism (also applies to an individual community), makes America great but at the same time it causes problems. American Conservatives view an individual community ought to pull itself up, without outside help. That's not realistic at all. European conservatives don't see things the same way. Given the Blacks destroyed these neighborhoods during the 1960s riots (Dr ML King's assassination), American conservatives would require that these communities pull themselves up, without help from upper levels of government. Hence, we get this neglect.

Jim Crow began in Virginia, 1870. The real issue was bringing Man In The House laws to public housing, and paying single moms when they had kids. This destroyed the black family that was sill intact at the height of Jim Crow. Now it feeds on itself.

@@1972Ray They paid single white moms also, yet this didn't happen to white families. The main issue is American inner cities were not rebuilt by the government after the riots of the 1960s. Sad to say, because some of the best people live here too, but Baltimore might be the worst in the country. I've been everywhere and there are few cities in America where it's bad up down and side to side. Baltimore has some great little neighborhoods, but way more decay and no-go zones spread over larger areas than anywhere I can think of. Maybe Detroit 20 years ago, but in 2024 it's Baltimore 😔

I never lived in Baltimore, but I worked in the city a lot. I was over at Bush and Hamburg Sts, and over in PIGTOWN on Scott Street. Both are hard areas. I didn't really interact with the people. I just worked as a machinist in the areas mentioned. I mainly didn't like the congestion, but the area was too rough to bring my family into it. I have always chosen to live in the country.
