Taiwan was never a popular destination for westerners, unlike Hong Kong or Thailand where you can see many more westerners, that's probably why less restaurants have English menu, unless you go to a touristy area, like Shilin night market.
@jasondicioccio8804 жыл бұрын
Oh god.. I've tripped up so many times ordering food in Taipei. I once ended up eating a cold curry cutlet sandwich at 7-11, because, even though I knew what the phrase "加熱嗎?" (heat it up?) meant at the time, my brain just couldn't process it in the heat of the moment and I just ended up shaking my head out of confusion. Basically, learning another language frequently makes you feel like a complete idiot. One whose biggest fear is asking a question and not being able to understand the answer. All I can do is continue to get better, though. I dream of the day when that fear starts to go away. One awesome thing about Taiwan, though is that everyone is super friendly and will usually jump at the chance to help if they're able to.
@woni98344 жыл бұрын
Stephanie Trembath Why did you expect the local menu in English? This is the arrogance of most English speakers. When non English speakers go to a restaurant in English speaking country, do they expect the menu to be written in their own language? I can see that both Prozzie and Wes are good English teachers. Low average salary is a key issue in Taiwan indeed, unfortunately ,government failed to solve this problem in past 20 years. The main reason is that a lot of Taiwanese factories and companies moved to China since 2000. Owing to the fact that 85% of Taiwanese have their own house, otherwise it will be more difficult for young people age bet 20-40 to make a living in Taiwan. The living cost is getting higher in recent years and young people have nothing left with their saving. I do hope that poor salary problem can be solved by new 2020 president to save these young generation in Taiwan.

Same thing if you want to take vacation day other than when they allow it.

The universities in Taiwan offer more than 200000 vacancies for the senior high school graduates to study every year currently but the number of students graduated from senior high schools each year are even less than that number due to the sharp falling population of children. That means everyone has the opportunity to study in a university. When everyone gets a degree easily, the low salary for a college graduate becomes normal while their parents may earn 100000 NTD every month working as the owner of a food stall without any degree. They college graduates may work as an English-teaching assistant from morning till late in the night earning about 30000 NTD a month while the westerners teach English without extra work and generally earn double of their local colleagues.

@fusion96194 жыл бұрын
@@30803080308030803081 I've been researching this online. They say you need to have a teaching license from your home country, and preferably a master's degree. I "only" have a bachelors and CELTA, and I have no interest in teaching in the US, so I really don't want to make the investment of getting a teaching license here... but so far, Taiwanese schools have been surprisingly unresponsive when I email them. It sucks... I like Taiwan so much, but I have no contacts there.

A master's degree in anything will do to teach the English language...But that said, the competition with only a master's here is stiff. PhDs are better but still...the cat's outta the bag a little and obviously anyone with a master's who's in a buxiban or public high school are certainly looking to get into the university scene. If you only have a master's then you have to be good in something else to differentiate yourself. That's the only way I got my job.

How do salaries of foreign English teachers compare to local engineers? Well, that would depend on a couple things. If you're a software engineer working for multinational companies such as Google or FB in Taiwan, then I don't think the salaries of foreign English teachers come close to what this group of engineers make. I think the foreign KZbinr Francois (Yuan Yuan), who works as an engineer at Yahoo, probably has a bigger paycheck than foreign English teachers in Taiwan. Engineers who work in semiconductor fabs in Hsinchu Science Park in companies such as TSMC probably have bigger paycheck as well. So engineers working at bigger, well-known, especially multinational, companies would make more than English teachers in Taiwan, because most of them need and use English as part of their jobs in addition to having knowledge and experience from their respective engineering professions. Engineers working at smaller, local and less well-known companies could make about the same or a bit less than foreigners who teach English. But if you gain more experience and move into leadership role, the salaries may rise beyond that of a typical salaries of English teachers from overseas. But do English teachers have more time and less job-related stress, compared to engineers? Yes, I am confident that's very much the case.

0:01 Watch out, there's a baby tribble on your shoulder. Don't audio-feed it. Did you two enjoy the long walk on the beach? 😁 BTW, why not hold the camera in your right hand when Wes is on your left? That would push him less into the background. That's probably why he got his hand on your shoulder. He doesn't want to 'fall off the stage'. That he's significantly smaller than you doesn't help either. You're running a real Batman-and-Robin scheme there. 😉 As for the 'society vibe and virtue', I tend to look at things from the biggest-possible-picture point. Severely suck the money out of Taiwan and then get to know how people really are. Because the karmic connections go very far, all the way to the root, and societies like Taiwan *could* be a kind of comfort zone bought with a dormant downside. This is a bit related to that saying: "Tell me who you are socializing with and I tell you who you are." - Who did Taiwan 'socialize' with in order to build the wealth that allows them to not live like a 'failed state'? This 'web' is bigger than many realize. 9:31 Is KZbin seriously still allowing the 10-minute thing to make a difference regarding ads?
