I start watching this channel a few years ago, vids are always very informative and nicely packed. But it also became kind of a routine to me. It's hard to explain. As seasons passes, vids switches from summer tyres to winter tyres on tracks with snow every where. And these shifts are following me along the way when i enter the differents seasons. I watch the winter test with a hot tea, a warm hoodie and it's kind of soothing. Then springs and summer comes and my habit changes, fresh drinks, fan running to cool me down. It's like a clock who give you from time to time a reminder of the season you're in.

One thing to add is longevity. I got 20k miles out of the PSS and 30k miles on the PS4S over similar driving conditions with a F80 M3. I replaced the PS4S with the same tire not because the tread was gone but the compound had gotten hard after 3 years and grip levels had diminished. The noise level is better, somewhat lower fuel consumption, bit better comfort, noticeable better grip in turns. The PSS, although the older and inferior tyre was available at a slightly higher price than the PS4 so it was an easy decision to make and am very happy with the decision. The tyres have been driven only on public roads so far, no track yet. Thanks for the great review, glad it confirmed my opinion too 😋

I am glad you put the caveat that "your car may be different". My last Porsche, a 2007 Boxster S, after many replacement sets of the N spec PSS, I finally tried the P4S non N-spec. It was cheaper, and on paper, better in every way. However, I found the ride to actually be harsher, understeer went up, and steering sharpness decreased. I was shocked, especially as I expected the ride to be better, yet it was not. To be clear, it was the way the car transferred small bumps into the car, like going over a gap in the pavement that I really felt with the P4S, not over-all ride quality. It's replacement the 2015 Boxster S is still on its N-spec Pirelli rubber, and for it's job as a daily it works great, but when it is time, I will have to make the same leap of faith again and there is something to knowing how the N-spec will feel that gives comfort. The GT4 will likely always have its N-spec Cup2s...those tires are just incredible and fit the mission.

My Peugeot 208 came with Michelin Energy Savers (I think the non-Plus variant). I upgraded to Michelin CrossClimate+ all round two years back, partly because I wanted something better suited to a wide range of conditions, but also because I believed that tyre technology had come on in six years. They certainly didn't feel any worse in any particular aspect, and having that extra confidence in winter meant money well spent. The fact they're also rated much better in terms of rolling resistance (peculiar given the 208's focus on efficiency) is a bonus.

Great video! In my opinion, the oem marked tire is not automatically (even when the car gets freshly released with it) the "best" tire for the car. It is the tire, that makes the car behave like the manufacturer prefers, or intends it to do within the capabilities of that specific tire manufacturer. "Best" is too subjective for that i think, everybody has a different opinion on what is best. Maybe you prefer more comfort, or maybe you prefer pointier steering as the manufacturer... I have never had any issues with non oem marked ones, as long as i used quality tires. I mean i put AO winter tires on a small Mercedes SUV, and they are great. (4 winters now, absolute no complaints) I put non oem marked Michelin summer tires on the same car to replace the Pirelli MO ones, and i prefer how the car ddrives with these Michelins by far. (of course in this case it could just be that the Pirelli's felt bad as they were 4 years old, but the difference was extreme.)

In 2 years, unless something happens, I need to change my SportContact 6 on my Type R. I hope, that by that time, the Michelin Cup2 Connect are available in 245/30 ZR20. Or I really do get a new set of wheels entirely. 245/35 ZR19 from the Type R Sport Line. But Michelin is looking tempting these days for summer tyres. For winter, I currently will stay with my Vredestein tyres. Michelin knows what they are doing in terms of sporty tyres. Not just car tyres, but motorcycle tyres as well. Tyre technology is always developing. It's only natural, that after a certain time, the OE tyres are not top of the top anymore for that particular vehicle. In the sport segment, that is even more noticable than in the touring segment. When I changed from the BT015 to the BTS20 on my Fireblade back in the days, it was like night and day, especially in the wet and on the track in hogh temperatures. The BT015 overcooked and became mushy in just a few laps, the S20 kept the grip for longer. With car tyres, it is similar, though I feel like, the current developement is slowing down a little. Especially with a couple of manufacturers like Bridgestone and Dunlop. That probably has also to do with motor sports involvement, since a lot of them have become, at least tyre wise, one make races. That might be more competetive, but it also slows down developement.

@@tyrereviews Oddly enough, for the Zype R's winter tyre size, 235/45 ZR18 the Cup 2 Connect are alread available. While 245/30 ZR20 is good for stearing feel, a bit meatier tyres add to comfort and wear resistance. At least from what I have seen other Type R owners experience, the 245/30 ZR20 quickly fall apart on the track. I think, I have to rewatch your video on the effect of tyre width. It's only 10mm difference on each side, but every time I switch between summer and winter tyres, I feel a big difference. Not just due to the rubber compound.

Hi I haven't tried the cup 2 BMW but I have used the og cup 2 and N0 N1 K1 K2 and the M0. The M0 (mercedes) has very similar wet performance to the og cup 2. It might actually be even better than the og. The compound seems harder than the OG and the Ferrari and Porsche compounds. The side wall also seems able to handle heavy weights/loads very slightly better than the tires designed for lighter cars like ferrari and Porsche. My Camaro weighs 3700lbs and wears 285-295 fronts and 305 rears. The M0 needs more time to get to perfect temperature than the other cup2s but also deals with heavy abuse better. This is not scientefic fact it's just my experience after running them in my car on street autocross and track. Hope this helps. Yeah, I remember when I had the PSSs I had to drop the tire pressure to 2.0BAR instead of the recommended 2.3BAR (front axle). With the PS4 I can keep it at 2.1. I know it's just 0.1bar which is not even 1.5PSI, but the difference is noticeable. Also on public streets where dust and small debris are not uncommon the PS4 (there is no S option in Europe for my Mazda 3MPS BK and I will not go 19" just for that) seems to be more consistent and less upset by any of these impurities.

Of course the standard recommended pressures will be right for the OE tyre, but there's absolutely no guarantee that they are going to be best for the PS4S. It's a completely different tyre. There are noticable differences between all models of the tire. Starting with the older models the K1(458 spec) and NO(gt4) are darker and feel harder than some of the newer compounds. There is some kind of sidewall difference between them but it is subtle. The rubber is a deep jet black. The newer models K2(488 pista) and N1(991.2 gt3) are much lighter in color. More of a grey. It is not a subtle difference nor is the color difference from age. The N1 and K2 feel more agressive than a standard cup 2. The K2 also has far less tread lines than other cup 2 tire. The K2 is also the softest and grippiest even when compared to the N1 spec. Lastly the M01(mercedes) spec again has the deep black rubber. However the M0 definitely feels like it has a stiffer sidewall compared to the other tires designed for lighter cars. It is also the hardest compound and most wear resistant. It also takes longer than the k2 and N1 to get to operating temperature. Lastly I feel it has more tread lines than an standard cup 2. Hope this was slightly informative.

@@memememine1 Awesome information, thank you for the comment! If you ever get time feel free to leave some reviews on www.tyrereviews.com! Where do you do most of your track work? What you might be finding with the K2 for the Pista etc is that it's actually the Cup 2 R compound, just in a heavily OE'd Cup 2. Much like there's plenty of Cup 2 tyres with the Cup 2 Connect compound in out there, unmarked!

@@tire_reviews I do more autocrosses than track but this year I managed to sneak in one track day at buttonwillow. I usually autocross at crows landing. I went on track with 295 M0 and 305 N1. It felt amazing the +10 section width at the front complemented the grippy compound of the N1 at the rear and the car was balanced, had very strong turn in and maintined good stability. It was hot(100F+) and I ran 4, 20 minute sessions but the tires were amazing. On the hottest sessions in noticed some fall off in the last few laps. I was running around 37 psi hot on track as recommended for my car. Yeah after hearing the Ferrari cheater press cars a few years ago and now seeing a k2 cup 2 with what seems to be half the tread lines missing, I suspected the k2 was going to be pretty crazy. How much better is the cup 2 connect compound? I assumed it was the same but they just added a sensor. I know it's proprietary but wish all the tire companies would disclose things like stealth changes, and the differences between the oe tire codes. Edit: Haha hey I didn't realize you are the same Johnathan as in the video! Love your channel. I think you are doing amazing work testing and bringing more info about tires. Ill definitely checkout that site.

nomnomguy680 Yup, he’s the real Jonathan Benson 😆 It sounds like you’ve been through a few sets 😱 Your findings are exactly why I personally don’t mind the Porsche N system. If I buy sets of the same N tyres, even though they’re also staggered fitment, should be able to keep the excellent OEM balance in my Cayman GTS. No track stuff for me (other than Nurburgring laps) Years ago I used to run Goodyear GSD3 and kept getting odd ones at random. It ruined the car!

Amazing video Jon, as always. Have you ever considered to do a video comparing a NORMAL car w/ oe tyres vs same car w/ uhp tyres? I mean... 150-200hp normal cars... I installed mps4 on my bmw 120d, wich comes standard with bridgestone potenza S001 runflatd. It has REALLY changed the way the car drives and it FEELS a lot faster. But.. is it only a feeling? Or is it really a lot faster on a track? I think that it will be VERY INTERESTING to know. Thanks and keep up with the amazing work!!

M3 CS driver here. The car came with the PSS (configuration was locked, so even if the car was new I could not change anything). After a few "episodes" where the car just lost grip/control, I took the decision to change to Cup 2, because they are the only other tires that are "approved" and with "*" for the CS. More grip, but in wet&cold it's a handful to keep it on the road. I might go with PS4S when the next change comes up.

@Tyre reviews, myself and a few others have put the non star-rated PS4Ss on our M4/M3s. I particularly had massive issues with the back of he car becomong completely disconnected from the front (Which were still MPSSs). Any slight left or right steering input at 100 would make the back end flop about like a dog's doodah. Yes they had good grip in a straight line but aweful and complete confidence killing anywhere else. The sidewalls are just so floppy. They feel like some FAlkens I put on a car years ago which leasted100 miles before they were binned. It worries me that others don't notice this - a few people agree though. Even my TC light would flashwhile taking a very shallow corner at 90+ Don't you notice it?
@tyrereviews4 жыл бұрын
Maybe as the M2 is a lighter car with different sizes it was less of an issue. I understand what you are talking about, but certainly wasn't significant at roads speeds or flat out on track. I can't comment on the TC issue as I run TC off on track.

Cheers, with my PSS about to hit 2mm or less in areas I've been undecided to replace with PSS just on the rears as the fronts are good still. But PS4S seems to have the wet advantage, comfort and sound. Hope it doesn't make my M2 boring though, breaking traction is fun!

Question being, IF owner wants for car to stay as it was OE? People are different, and different tires may change car more to one's liking. Some want more comfort, some - track theirs. Another bit .. original OE tires often are unreasonably more expensive then newer tires of that class. And in case if they can be purchased only via car dealership, markup is insanely unreasonably mad. Meanwhile GTR3 seems interesting tire .. both by mention it standing well at track abuse, and also that googled up giti-tire.eu site listed among sizing 225/45R17 too. So maybe those not with latest ferrari-s/porsche-s/M coupes may finally have new hybrid street-track tire that is actually purchasable (shame on you, Michelin (and Continental, and Good Year))? :)

@CanariesExplorer3 жыл бұрын
Interesting video with the results unsurprising. A newer version of a tyre would be expected to have measurable improvements over the predecessor. To my knowledge there are only minor differences between an oem marked tyre and a non marked version - these are usually in relation to dimensional tolerances and other minor parameters and not fundamental differences. I would be interested if you compared oem vs non oem versions of the same tyre. I expect that they would not show much difference under road driving conditions with the non oem tyre being 10% cheaper!

I have a M135i rear drive. I still get the OEM Michelin Pilot Super Sports here in Australia and after 200,000kms have never used anything else. In fact we can’t get the PS4S in that size and that’s why I assume they keep brining in the PSS.

I had a similar experience recently when I replaced my PSS tires with PS4 S tires on an A4. I was expecting the PS4 S, as a replacement and upgrade of the PSS, to be better in all regimes but found that there was a noticeable degradation in steering response going from the PSS to the PS4 S. Part of that I am sure was the PS4 S was a new tire whereas the PSS was worn out so the PS4 S had more tread to laterally deflect. Whatever the reason, I do wish the PS4 S had better steering response but I do like the improved ride quality and noise levels of the PS4 S over the PSS. Personally, if I had to do it over again, I’d go with the older tire, but it was no longer made.

Great and informative video. I wonder how will be the comparison between PSS * marked vs normal PSS on M2. What I'v heard/read is that the star marked (*) have harder sidewalls. So maybe there will be differences in handling. Please share if you have any observations. Also the OE tyres have differences in the compound and the production process is monitored by the car manufacturer so you should expect higher quality control but I can not find any official information to back this up.

Thanks for another great video! I have been asking for this for a few times already, but I would like like to see/hear your view on tire aging. Maybe some tire manufacturer or reseller has a set of 5 old winter or sommer tires which can be comparet to a brand new tire on track and road. I know there are some rules that you should not buy an older tyre (5 years +) and use a tire older than 10 years - but I never saw someone test the effects on grip and daily driving or even track driving.

I drive an M140 (with an MPLSD fitted) which comes as standard with MPSS, at the beginning of summer switched over to the MPS4 (not the MPS4S). Purely as a comparison on the road, comfort is definitely greatly improved as is the reduced sound level. On a hot summers day on a perfectly smooth surface the MPSS has slightly more grip, on anything other than that the MPS4 is better and the difference increases dramatically as you move away from ideal conditions. Once you get to a cold damp day the difference is dramatic, it changes a squirmy snappy car into something which feels planted and predictable. Personally I'd say the MPSS is entirely the wrong tyre for british roads, especially is anything other than summer.

It may not be that important with * marked tires on an M2, as it’s an RWD. On BMWs with xDrive however, the * marked tires are quite important. The reason for this is that the circumference are matched front and rear on a staggered setup (which most BMWs have from factory). Because of this, one (or both) of the tires have a slightly different dimension than a regular tire of the same size. Without * marked tires on a car with xDrive, you could damage the transfer case, as the difference in circumference on the front wheels compared to the rear wheels is to big to tackle.

Hehe, this is interesting. In the Ferrari community we are all switching to MPS4S. The Lusso set really works great on a 458. More interestingly, the Cup 2 N1 works a lot better than the K2 on the Pista. You should look into that. Using other OE tyres than actual OE, i.e Porsche OE tyres on Ferrari etc.
