2 nights out in the woods and some seriously difficult snowshoeing and cold weather in Ontario, Canada. The first-day temp was around -12C and dropped to -20C overnight, by far the coldest I have ever experienced sleeping outside. My tarp shelter worked against me this night, an experience I will never forget.
The second night stayed around -9C through the night with light snow so I went without my tarp, a beautiful relaxed evening beneath the stars.

----- Commonly asked questions: -----
Why are you cutting down trees?
The trees I cut down are all dead, trees that die and remain standing dry out and prevent rain and moisture from saturating the wood so it makes great firewood.
Live trees contain a lot of moisture and don't burn, I also love trees and I don't cut down live trees
If you are alone who's filming?
I film everything myself from a tripod and yes I do walk back to get the camera when I film myself walking away from the camera. it's pretty straightforward, it just takes time. Two Unedited Clips from the video - • Video
Are you scared of wild animals?
Bears are Hibernating over winter and wolves aren't an issue in this area, so no
-20C wheres your jacket?
The first-day temp was around -12C and dropped to -20C overnight. Pulling the sled sawing/chopping wood and working hard creates a lot of sweat. If I sweat it will eventually freeze which is bad news so when I'm working I wear a long sleeve a small sweater than a big wool sweater which is on the cooler side but prevents sweating and is perfect for the conditions.
Spoon? Why not Chopsticks?
I ate oatmeal, soup and rice not shown in the video, the sausage spoon thing was a joke :p Yes, chopsticks would work better and are easier for sausage, and yes I am proficient with chopsticks :p
What's with the Poo?
It was some animal Scat I found, I was curious and I didn't recognize it, was hoping someone would point out what animal it was. Its likely Fox scat

You have my utmost respect. I’m 58 and did a winter camping trip into the interior of BC, Canada about 3 weeks ago. I drove up a logging road and had to park at the start of a steep side road because the snow was too deep. 4x4 got stuck and had to dig it out. I had to use snowshoes and a pulk to haul all my gear up the road about 200 meters, on 4 trips. I started this hauling around 4:30pm. After that, having to keep a fire going to keep my dog and me warm (got down to -18C at night) and all the setting up, I finally managed to get to sleep at 1:40am. I can’t remember ever being that tired 😴. Snow was at least 3 to 4 feet deep (the fire made a hole 3 feet down) So stayed two nights and headed home. It was a great experience and will do it again. Wife thinks I’m crazy. Sure makes you appreciate a warm shower.

I love that snow on the face: alone in a mountain hut high in the Pyrenees, the drifts higher than the windows, toasty in a down bag, listening to music as the finest snow found its way in to land on the tiny bit of face exposed. Truly sublime. The fact I may not have been 100% sober probably helps the memory too!

I have around 35 years of experience with this kind of outdoors life in Norway and I have sometimes in my youth made the same mistake. We usually set up the tarp a little bit different than you do here. If there is any wind from behind there must be an opening on the whole lower backside of the tarp to let air move through, else the smoke will always build up under the tarp. Another solution can be to position the tarp so that the wind will move in at an angle from behind, that will blow the smoke away most of the times. Yes it will be a little less warm under there but for me at least the most important thing with a tarp is to prevent snow or rain entering.

I remember the winter of 1989, it was -55 Celsius outside, and -17 in my bedroom. I slept in the living room beside the wood stove instead. The toilet was frozen each morning too. Then I would go to work. What was my work? I drove the Zamboni in an ice rink. So basically my life was perpetually cold.

Check out floor sleeping. I’ve had chronic insomnia since I was 5 years old. I’ve had months where I could only sleep 3-4 hours a night. Making the transition to sleeping on the “floor” (I sleep on a yoga mat with sheets and comforter on top) isn’t easy, but it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Now I sleep straight through the night essentially every night. Once you get used to it, it’s more comfortable, you feel more supported and “safer” in a way, and your sleep quality generally improves because of it. Not saying it’ll work for you, but I’d definitely experiment with it.

Absolutely Great. Unfortunately I'm 57 now so I'm getting up there. I live in NW Wisconsin and solo winter camped once at -2 Fahrenheit. I tell you, boiling water from snow, food prep, the hiking, cold etc is super tough. But in that hardship you tap into something primal, peaceful and just comforting. Feeling close to mother earth is something to cherish. Cheers Sir as that was an awesome experience even for those of us watching on our phones in a 70 degree room!

Balls of steel to do what you do, Iparticularly like the end where you point out and emphasise the fact that even though the setting looked very relaxing and serene, it was still a hard slog. The cold, the fatigue, the snow on you during your slumber is so nice to watch from the comfort of a cosy home. Even giving thanks to the universe(God) was a nice touch. Thanks ....Jah Bless.

A few tips for those who may want to try this : 1) bring a complete change of clothing and after you arrive strip down cool off and redress in dry clothing ( sweat and moisture is your worst enemy) dry the damp clothes and repack always bring a few extra wool socks and change after any prolonged exertion . 2) bring a small fleece blanket and create a small tent over your head to sleep, you’ll be breathing warmer air … 3) insulate well beneath the sleeping bag Have fun and enjoy your outdoors 💙🇨🇦
