I came across Jet Set Radio in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing because the music from those stages were iconic and my neighbor and I were instantly hooked to the Concept of Love despite never playing JSRF. Years later, SEGA re-release JSR as an HD remaster for the PS360/PC/Vita and one day, this game was free on Steam and them, I became hooked, after a couple of attempts of playing it via emulation on my Android phone, with JSR between the soundtrack and the gameplay and the aesthetics. So when BRC was announced I was in heaven as it seems that we finally got a spiritual successor to JSR made by a dev team that I could trust in Team Reptile as I loved Lethal League. And when teh game was released on the Swicth, I bought it and played it fully (although I don't have thr 100%) and enjoyed it a lot, and then in the Fall Steam sales I got it for PC just for the downloadable soundtrack and having the option to play it with mods, I love BRC

It's good but way too slow-paced. I felt myself falling asleep getting around the city. I wish the different vehicles/equipment had given you different speeds, or the turbo button wasn't tied to a meter, or something. It was fun but it just lacked something. I played Jet Set Radio 1 & 2 to death and was looking forward to this for a while. I wouldn't say I was disappointed exactly, I really appreciated how fleshed out the combat system was and the tricks were pretty intuitive, I just felt like I was doing the same thing at the same speed for way too long, something was just not clicking for me

actually, the diffrence is extremely minor, but the rollerblades are the fastest, and have a far tighter turning angle, while the bike instead is the slowest with the largest turning angle. the skateboard is a nice happy medium. conversely, the bike's wheelie duration is far longer then the cess slide. but if you truly want faster movement, get movement+

I'm a bit upset that SEGA decided to make a new Jet Set after Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. It comes off as selfish. I hope Team Reptile doesn't get discouraged and continues this series.
@GhoulFMV7 ай бұрын
yeah it's blatantly obvious the reboot is a direct response to BRC being so successful. what they've shown so far looks so strange too, i don't understand what sega is doing. i'd love to see what team reptile does with another entry in BRC because i think they could absolutely nail it

@tknklr6 ай бұрын
@@sebastianfernandez6146 nothing wrong with supporting Team Reptile. support them because they make good games. But Bombrush and Jet Set existing within the same landscape was kinda the point wasnt it? A lotta devs create games inspired by the ones they love to not only recreate the experiences they had but also boost interest in said genre. If Reptile doing their thing means SEGA starts sweating enough to blow the dust off of JSR then thats a net positive for gamers. I just hope Reptile continues their steam and SEGA can revive their series without too many scuffs.

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: BRC is the evolution of JSRF just like JSRF is the evolution of JSR. It is objectively a better game, but the spirit and love in the game clearly exists because of its predecessor’s experiments. Other games like Hover tried, but this is the first game to truly understand why the games are culturally impactful.

I didn’t even know there was a sequel to Jet Set Radio. I recently obtained an emulator and a ton of Dreamcast ROMs. Along with Power Stone 1 & 2, and Resident Evil: Code Veronica, I’ve been playing JSR recently and my only gripe is the controls can be a bit cumbersome, to say the least. Other than that, beautiful game, dope soundtrack and interesting gameplay (aside from some consistently clunky issues).
@iUsedToBeAMusician6 ай бұрын
I enjoy playing both games, but Jet Set Radio Future's vibe and music is unmatched. I try not to compare the two, but Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is indeed trying to be a spiritual successor , so its fair to conpare. The game has some bangers, but a lot of songs i prefer to skip. I appreciate BRCF for making me appreciate UK Garage. BRCF'd story was way beyond expectation. I loved the character designs, but i wish the voice acting qas more dynamic. I go back to playing as Red because he's so animated qnd exciting to hear.

thanks! i used the assets from the press package for the game that's on team reptiles website and photoshop to put it together. for my vocal tone, i've been working jobs where I have to talk a lot for about 10 years so my voice is a bit damaged. i try to keep my narration relaxed and casual when i'm recording because I like that quality in other peoples vids. i'm working on upping the jokes in the script for future videos instead of most of them being done in editing as that's something I used to focus on pretty heavily so i think that might help add more variation in my tone but again, my voice is pretty worn out overall. thanks again for the thoughts!

I'm going to be crucified for this, but I played both JSR games back to back recently, and I didn't find the gameplay to be all that fun, to be honest. Both games have little nagging issues in terms of it's controls, physics, and combat that are nitpicky in isolation, but compound into a quite frustrating experience. I think it's a testiment to the aura that Jet Set Radio held, in terms of it's presentation, that it was able to carry a game that was so rough around the edges. Future did have some good ideas in terms of its gameplay structure and level design, and I feel like that's what BRC was able to flesh out to a huge degree. The level design, in tandem to its tight movement made this game more fun for me, and is the reason why I feel this game is ultimately superior to the previous games. Although a criticism that I can understand is that, whilst the movement system is highly functional and intuitive, It can also feel quite sterile in terms of its feeling of speed and momentum. JSR (especially the first game in particular), although way more inconsistent and unforgiving, can have moments where you feel a big rush of speed and momentum, and it can be really fun when it happens.

I agree with almost everything you mentioned and all your points were very well articulated. However, I personally still prefer BRC. I deeply respect JSR and Sega for creating them, but the moment to moment gameplay of BRC is more to my tastes. I would've loved for BRC to be a little faster paced, tighter to play, and generally more difficult. But the chill vibes and flow beats out JSR in so many ways The original JSR is true to its arcade roots, but it really suffers from the stiffness of its controls, the odd momentum, and occasionally punishing level design. JSRF was a big shift to the more laidback and chill style that BRC continues. It just has its own fair share of problems when it comes to linear level design and mission structure I'm still looking forward to seeing what Team Reptile does next with future 3D games and even the new JSR. Here's hoping both are great and may even iron out the problems that continue to be present in their formulas

Great video! For me personally, JSR was always a franchise that was inches from greatness. Incredible aesthetics, absolutely engrossing in every way, but that gameplay was juuuust stilted enough to keep me from truly loving it. Like, Tony Hawk is right there and is so much more mechanically interesting, so it's hard not to want a little bit more. BRCF gave me that. It has an actual combo structure and the most ambitious evolution of meter in a skating game since it was originally introduced in THPS1. It's a resource you can spend on speed, extra air mobility, combo extension, or to just increase your base score, which gives it way more dimensionality than any meter in any skating game, as far as I'm aware. I just wish it were a bit stingier with how much it gives you so making choices with it was more consequential. The scoring is interesting, but also comes off as a little meaningless. Like, it's too easy to manipulate. In a game like THPS, your combo score is a function of how many tricks you can pack in before the balance meter becomes too unstable to continue. Your score feels like a real reflection of your ability to play the game well. BRCF doesn't really have anything that would forcibly end a combo, so they just go on forever. The dynamic is very different. Since you can only get multipliers by using specific environmental objects, and you can't use the same one twice, your score becomes a reflection of how much of the stage you've done tricks on in total. That's a pretty fresh take on a skating game combo, which is cool, but it turns scoring into an act of endurance. How long can you stand exploring a stage while maintaining a combo before you get tired of looking for more things to grow your multiplier? That's not a very interesting question imo. The solution is the time attack, which the game does both in the story and the postgame. Having a time limit means you're concerned not just with how many objects you use to build your multiplier, but with how quickly you can reach them. You start planning routes through areas you know have a lot of densely packed billboards and rail corners. That works great! But the game only asks you to do it a couple times per stage, and only to meet specific thresholds. It's insane to me that they didn't include a 1-2 minute time attack mode that would keep track of your best score. Instead it keeps track of your highest combo per stage disconnected from any time limit at all. The best way to max that out is to get a decent multiplier then find a nice rail loop and let your character grind it in a circle for a few hours. That's not great. BRCF's scoring has some problems, but if you asked me to explain anything equivalent to this about JSR, I wouldn't have anything for you. That makes BRCF the more engaging game to me by miles. For my priorities, BRCF isn't just better than JSR, it absolutely embarrasses it. And BRCF still has a *long* ways to go. I wish dearly for a sequel that can tighten up the systems I've been talking about to make something that can aspire to the kind of score system that THPS has. Whatever sequel Sega is now planning for JSR, I feel assured that it won't scratch this particular itch that BRCF has. Long live Bomb Rush! Disconnected side note: Police are terrible. I'm surprised you didn't talk about how the outhouses lock after one use, so you have a limited amount of clothes changes per area before having to leave and return to refresh them. I guess it's meant to limit your means of getting rid of them, like looping back in on the same changing room was something they didn't want you to do? But there's no penalty for getting caught by police, and getting caught resets your heat, so I just did that. Limiting the outhouses winds up serving no function, it just limits how often you can change your clothes for no real benefit. Extremely weird system.
@GhoulFMV7 ай бұрын
great write up with great points! i realized after the fact that i forgot to go over bathrooms locking LOL but yeah that only adds to how annoying the heat system is, i should've mentioned it. i'd LOVE to see a BRC sequel where team reptile can really dial in the BRC experience. here's hoping!
