Brock Purdy is entering the biggest game of his young career (once again) as the San Francisco 49ers hit the road to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. Purdy is 7-0 since taking over for Jimmy Garoppolo after injuring his foot. If he were to beat Philly, he would be the first rookie in NFL history to reach the Super Bowl. However, the Niners do have Trey Lance on their roster, whom they gave up three first-round picks for. Emmanuel Acho, Joy Taylor, LeSean McCoy and David Helman debate on whether Purdy is the 49ers future or not.

Keep Lance there as a backup. This season we saw at least 65 different starting QBs. Purdy is playing right now because the Niners had two QBs go down with season ending injuries. Good, or even just competent backup QBs should be worth a lot right now.

Purdy gets the job imo. Trade Lance for capital. He might not be a bust in terms of talent, however next year is year 3 of his rookie contract. Even if Purdy doesn’t make SB or win, he deserves the job. the team respects and loves him, he makes Kittle an all pro again and makes offense efficient. Plus, he’s not going to get injured like Lance or Jimmy. Purdy is probably Shanahans fav player in terms of efficiency and he doesn’t make mistakes frequently. It’s no question in my mind

@Escape I'm not sure what kind of capital you expect to get. There's not enough info on him for teams to give up a ton of picks. Also, he is coming off a nasty injury and that drives down any demand for him like it did with Jimmy this past off-season. Keeping doesn't hurt the team because he is on a cheap rookie deal and this team can't keep a healthy QB for a whole season. If he can't beat out Brock in training camp he'll be a backup, which the team doesn't really have at this point.

Literally they have the same numbers. Jimmy had his best year this year. Look at the film he pocket awareness and toughness showed. I never liked Trey. We reached for him. Trey is a running qb that averaged 13 passes a game in college. I say keep Purdy and Jimmy, toss Trey while he still has value.

How can you say their numbers are the same when we're scoring 30+ points per game with Purdy versus 20 points per game with Jimmy on avg this year? I like Jimmy and I appreciate what hes done for this organization especially when he started 5 and oh but there's just so many issues that come with him and nothing against him it's just a lot of bad luck but also his decision making is questionable at times there is a good Jimmy and a bad Jimmy and I really don't like it when we get the bad Jimmy many pointless turnovers and botched moments at key times. Purdy has much greater poise and sees and attacks more of the field. It's quite obvious w no hate to Jimmy. The team just is better with Purdy. Granted before Jimmy went down he was playing the best I'd seen him play and CMC I felt has a lot to do with it. Jimmy has good value when healthy but I think hes gonna cost too much as a backup compared to Lance who has a potential upside even though it's not as great a start as Brock's

The most amazing thing I've seen Purdy accomplish was when the Cowboys' defense had them locked up, Kittle sees and opening and gets moving. In the chaos he signals to Purdy who runs to his left and throws the "juggle catch" to Kittle. For a rookie to be that present and focused in the moment is special. And if that were Jimmy G or Trey Lance they would have ignored Kittle and lost on that down. The stats bear it out as well. Kittle was getting nothing before Purdy showed up.

You can't keep Lance based only on the amount you paid for him. It is sunk cost. Lane is also on a rookie contract. Keep them both and play Lance in certain situations where his skills are better. i.e. running.

The thing is Acho talks too much about talent gap! The physical attributes is the only thing that you can recognizes right away but there is a lot other attributes, football IQ, decision making, poised , calmness , accuracy etc. RThey rely their evaluation too much on NFL teams scouting and draft status. But there always an exception like Kurt Warner and Brock Purdy could ver well end up being special like Warner. Time will tell but it is too early to tell about talent gap now especially the guy is undefeated. Don't they know winning is also a talent?

This season I think he was still getting used to NFL speed. But let’s assume you are right and he has “hit his ceiling”. Using that same logic then how can Lance get any better? @@deeverettgreen8785 Trey was thrown into the fire with the o line all basically new. Trent Williams was the only previous starter and Mcglinchy was coming back from a major injury. Then the coaching staff was basically all new and Kyle was trying to run some ridiculous offense with Trey with him running the ball more than the running backs. Trey put the team on his back and had us leading vs the bears even through all that and our defense fell apart. Then Trey went and was able to put points up in every drive vs the Seahawks until he got hurt. Purdy walked into a team firing on all cylinders. He has been amazing but to act as if it’s a fair comparison is ridiculous.

Talent comes in many forms. Brock is a better QB than Trey by far right now, and is doing many QB things very well. THINGS THAT ARE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO QUANTIFY AND DON'T SHOW UP ON STAT SHEETS. He takes care of the ball well, understands situational football very well, knows a lot of scheme but is still learning, knows when to scramble, can throw tight window throws, can beat man coverage, has great anticipation and ball placement, can layer throws, etc. Most of those are hard to measure and don't show up in most stats.

Short term Purdy is fine cause he's cheap so a stacked roster can be put around him. Once it's time to pay him 40-50mill a season I don't think his ceiling is high enough to carry a less stacked roster. Trey Lance is supposed to have the high ceiling so if he can reach that then long term trey Lance is the better option.

That's the whole point indeed. We know that Purdy gets the job done, we don't know if Lance can do it. While both their supposed "ceilings" are yet unknown, we have a certainty about Purdy, where we only have hopes for Lance. The 49ers bank on certainties rather than on speculations. Let another team buy the hopes (i.e. trade Lance), Purdy's now our man.

People talk about the draft capital the 49ers traded like it ended up being absurd. They swapped #12 for #3 in 2021, the #29 pick in 2022, and in the upcoming 2023 draft the highest the pick can be is #29. So basically they traded 2 bottom 4 selection 1st round picks which are basically valued as high 2nd rounders and a mid 3rd rounder. If Brock turns out the be the franchise QB from the last pick in the draft that more than makes up for the draft capital used to get Trey and that doesn't count what they could get if the traded Trey. Clearly those picks haven't hurt the 49ers in the slightest way

Imagine if Kyle just used Trey Lance as a QB like he said he was, and not call QB powers or zone reads…imagine if they kept the noise down with jimmy and just fully committed to the kid the moved up to get? It isn't so farfetched to think that Shanahan would have a QB competition regardless of the outcome of Purdy winning the SB. Ppl forget Kyle allowed Jimmy to raise his trade value last szn before they decided to move on from him. Honestly, I'm still not fully convinced Brock Purdy is the 49ers franchise QB. Don't get me wrong, he's done some great things for the team this year and has impressed me numerous times this season. He's definitely looking like the guy our teams needs moving forward. With that said however, people need to keep in mind there's not a ton of film on him right now and it's very possible he's taking teams by surprise for why he's having the success he's currently enjoying. There's a reason for the term, "One year wonder." Now I'm not saying that's going to happen to Brock Purdy, but it COULD HAPPEN. Let's not forget when Colin Kaepernick first burst onto the NFL scene, he too was taking the league by storm, but once defenses adjusted to him, he became a subpar QB at best. True, Brock Purdy and Colin Kaepernick are two different QB's entirely, but again, the point I'm making here is we need to see how Brock Purdy performs once teams get a whole offseason to game plan for him. THAT is how we'll know whether or not he's legit or just a fluke. The only exception to that is if he does indeed lead this team to a Super Bowl and wins it. If that happens, ok fine, I'm sold because he's now in elite territory as a QB, but other than that, I say have Brock Purdy and Trey Lance compete for the starting job next season and see who outplays who. Giving up on Trey Lance or even trading him at this point is just a completely dumb idea. We still haven't seen enough of him to verify whether or not he's worth keeping as even a backup. It could be he's a late bloomer that will one day become the investment the 49ers traded him for. He might even get his chance to shine should Brock get hurt next season and finally harness the talent Shanahan and Lynch saw in him, which is also a possibility. Who can say for certain? Bottom line is, the only QB the 49ers need to part ways with in the offseason is Jimmy G., not Trey Lance. Jimmy G is not going to get any better. He's hit his ceiling. The same cannot be said for Trey Lance.

Trey doesn’t get enough credit for the games he played. he actually played decent given the circumstances, week 1 was a monsoon. but in that game he made some big throws outside the numbers, used his legs to pick up first downs. and u can see the potential. and that was way before CMC was added.

If he can hang in either of these games with at least 20 offensive pts even if he doesn't win then keep him. Bc the money can buy/keep better teammates. You can hold off on trading Trey Lance for a little bit. We should see if he developed more when/if he heals up during the of season. I know the distraction but they're going to need a back up anyhow. But I'm not knowledgeable about the contract situations. Maybe he's worth more in a trade than to keep him wait around for free agency.
