Buddhism does not conflict with science. Buddha teaches people to use reason and fine answer. Science mean "knowledge", Buddhism and Science goes together.

"Religion" is not proto-indo-european word. "re" "ligo" means "re" "read" or read again. How can those words be proto-indo-european?

I don't think of the Dharma as a religion, but I wouldn't quarrel at all with someone who described it as a religion. I guess I'm just not hung up on that word in the way others seem to be. For me, Buddhism, as Roshi Pat said, is a way of life. The Dalai Lama has also called it a "science of mind." It has many elements: psychological, philosophical, ritual/religious, etc. So, whatever you want to call it is fine. But calling it "atheistic," as I've heard others do, I think is misleading.

In my opinion, a very good argument that Buddhism is not a religion, is the fact that Buddhism can combined with other religions very well. As we see e.g. in Nepal or Ladakh or Tibet, where we see that Buddhism is combined shamanistic beliefs or Hinduism (see all the gods in these cultures). They don't mutually exclude each other since they are different concepts about different aspects of life. Neither does Buddhism conflict with science as do a lot of religions...

Define religion. If it includes god(s) then answer is clear.

Training the children to focus their minds sounds good on paper. As a child, I 'learned' meditation... which really meant, I got the teacher very angry because of my childishness. Let children be children. It's the same with making kids read the bible... wait till they are older and they will find the path themselves. Shunryu Suzuki wrote, if you wish to control a sheep or cattle, give them a large field.

Buddhism as it is practiced by most Tibetans is absolutely a religion. They pray to and make offerings to Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and Masters, hoping for them to grant wishes, hoping to be reborn in their presence, in heavens (Buddha fields).

saying buddhism is not a religion is a disruptive statement, made to make you look twice and think. buddhism IS a disruption model at its core. in fact, buddhism disrupts/subverts ANY belief system, and has been doing so since the Buddha. "belief" is something that buddhism dismantles. when you participate in the disciplines that buddhism utilizes (meditation in particular), these naturally unravel conceptual clinging and the personal identification with your thoughts and beliefs. "religion" is a concept. "belief" is a concept. all these concepts, buddhism isn't so impressed with.
