Growing up I was Christian but became atheist in high school . I joined the military in my 20s and was a meathead with anger issues who loved to drink , party, sleep around and fight. When I ended up stationed over seas in Guam and I was a corpsman working in General surgery/OR , trauma team and occasional morgue duty . I saw a lot of trauma and death and mentally it was becoming a lot and I was having a crisis . I tried talking ti different religions but they just said to pray or they’ll pray for me which isn’t helpful and they didn’t want me asking certain questions . One day I found a Buddhist temple there and my roommate and I checked it out . The first visit and they were immediately so welcoming . The first monk we encountered only spoke mandarin so they grabbed someone else to talk to us about Buddhism , the temple etc and they had us eat lunch with them . We started going more and more because they were so welcoming and because they said “you don’t need to be Buddhist to come here , all are welcome . If you ever need a place to pray , mediate , eat or just a quiet place to think our doors are always open, no questions asked .” And as time went on my roommate and I started going to the services even and since they were in mandarin they had a translator just for the two of us . That temple changed my life forever as it got me more and more into Buddhism and practicing it . What really clicked with me was that they didn’t get angry when I asked difficult questions about it , they were always so happy whenever I had questions and always encouraged me to question the teachings they taught me . I also really liked that Buddhism is all about personal accountability with how only you can save yourself . That was back in 2016 when I first found Buddhism and there’s been many trials and tribulations since but learning how to walk the path has been liberating. I’ve since left the military, deleted all my social media accounts, became a pacifist, have been sober for years , became vegetarian and other changes. Buddhism has changed my life in so many ways and made me a much more mindful , open and present individual. I still have much to learn but learning is a process I’ve truly come to love .

Cheers bud. Seems that you have took on the teachings well. Buddhism mentioned that one can cultivate anywhere, anytime. Needs no temple, for you are your own temple. Hold oneself accountable to your own deeds, do more good, build good karma. For one will be judged, by your own deeds, redeemed by your own karma, responsible for every action. Do good at own pace, follow your own heart, embrace things that comes to us. Experience, digest it, allow compassion to grow, and learn to walk away, may that be good or bad. Not subjecting oneself to be overly tied down by earthly desires, that will hinder your own journey forward.

What I view Buddhism is just a framework which offering tools for people to liberate themselves from the mortal shackles. I don't even need to change into Buddhism, heck I even changed out of Buddhism but still using some tools within the framework to have a better life. The true liberation is within your soul and not from any external validation. Well at least this is what I've got after immense suffering in mortal life for over 20 years. Now I'm living in more ascetic life but not true ascetic. I'm refraining from doing things because I perceived them as potentially dangerous and not because I'm restricting myself from doing so. It's vastly different from ascetics and much more liberating than any of them. Maybe that's why I won't become a monk. By being a monk, people will put on shackles which forced you to live in restricted life than allowed you to use the teachings to liberate yourself.

The Buddha never said whether God exists or not. The Buddha taught that believing or not believing in the existence of God is not the path to liberation. Everything is subject to change. We ourselves change. There are encounters and departures, births and decay. Clinging to anything unstable is suffering. The Buddha's path is to train the mind to be constantly aware of change and to understand the reality of emptiness.

I grew up in a buddhist household and when I was about 13 years old, I had went to church with a babysitter. I had a buddhist necklace that I used to always wear, and that led a lady in the church to tell me to take that off. I didn't know anything, I just knew I had to go because my babysitter was going. I didn't take it off because my mom gave it to me. I later than told my mom about it and she told me, I could take it off next time I go. I asked her if she was mad and she told me, everyone has a choice and a path. If I decide to be Christian thats my path. I continued to go to church until I was about 19, my mom asked me if I wanted to go to a temple with her and I said yes. Curious. As we were in the car. I asked her about all the Gods, she said Gods are just an ideology and a concept that we should look up to like a role model. When we got to the temple, the first thing I felt there was tranquility. Like I was taking a hike on a nice sunny day. It was peaceful and everyone was so welcoming and nice. When I talked to the monks, the things they preach were nothing about the Gods, but more like life lessons. I came back to the temple again and again, sometimes alone. It became a place I wanted to go at anytime rather than a place I should go every Sunday. The teachings of Buddhism, never told me who to be but to be the best version of myself. To put faith in myself and to never stop following the path of self growth. At the time, I was going through a rough time. Not to get dark but I was SA and it had a heavy toll on my mental health. I started following the teachings of buddhism and learned to forgive and now I am a lot happier, of course it still effects me but I am not in a constant state of turmoil. Fast foward to now, I haven't been to that temple in years but I still remember and follow those teachings those monks taught me. I don't see Buddhism as a religion, I see it more as a spirituality and a way of living. This might be controversial, but I think many take religion and turn it into a set of rules that you have to follow, and to me that's not what religion is for. Religion helps us find meaning in life but it shouldn't limit our growth.

When you are happy, understand that it will not last long. When you are suffering, understand that it will not last long. Let go and understand it. This is Buddhism.

Another example is Tibetan Buddhism, which has been co-opted by corrupt nobility and monks to justify Tibetan serfdom.

Chinese Buddhism (Han Buddhism) and Indian Buddhism are different. Chinese Buddhism is 3 religious combinations 1 . 三教合一 . ( 道Taoism+儒Confucianism+釋Buddhism ). China retains the content of the Buddhist scriptures. Simple Indian Buddhist ? ancient Chinese do not accept it From its inception, " Chinese Buddhism" has been influenced by native Chinese religions and philosophy, especially Confucianism and Taoism, but also Chinese folk religion. Before the emergence of Buddhism, the Chinese did not have the concept of hell. So when the Chinese described hell, they would quote Buddhism. "Taoism" has formed Chinese culture and Chinese philosophy. (Heaven) "Confucianism" regulates the moral concepts and etiquette of the Chinese. (Human world) "Buddhism" affects the concept of life and death of the Chinese. (hell) ------------------ Chinese Buddhism and Indian Buddhism are completely different. Even in many countries with Buddhist cultures in Southeast Asia, their Buddhist culture and content are completely different (the difference from Chinese Buddhism is also huge). India's main religion and Buddhism is antagonistic. Ancient Buddhism appeared and developed in a certain place in Asia for only a short time (not today India). But Buddhism has existed in other countries and peoples for hundreds of years. Various Buddhist cultures on the earth have India is not relevant. Indians should not fantasize about the whole world.

Originally, Buddhism itself isn't really a religion, it's just a group of people teaching each other how to find the true meaning in life, it's about how should we cope with suffering, and how to survive in this mortal world. But humans are never content, they came up with the practice of religion and now it's become a religion, also dividing into classes and so on.
@sleepandrelaxation33956 ай бұрын
Buddhism is about questioning and finding the truth instead of simply believing in what others tell you... in many ways, this is how science works, scientist form a hypothesis and perform experiments to proof the hypothesis. After the scientist have completed the experiment, the test methods and results are published for peers to repeat the same experiment and see if everyone comes to the same results. So if you practice science or look to science for answers, then essentially you also follow buddhist philosophy. The beauty of buddhism is that you can believe in any religion or no religion, but still practice buddhism.

When something exist it's counter part also come to existence. For example, left - right, up - down, day - night, birth - death, cold - hot etc.. if you remove one, it's counter part also ceased to exist. Think about a world there is no left side, then you will never talk about its counter part (right side). Same thing can be applied to things in your mind, happiness - sadness, love - hate, past - future. If you are a person that looking for happiness, that means you are in sadness. In fact they are the same thing because one cannot exist without the other. If you can let go both of them your mind will be in a neutral state which is called Niravana. When you realized this dualism, you mind is in middle path(third state), and you stop arguing or fighting for one side. Most important part is how you make your mind neutralized, in fact it's when you realized that sadness - happiness, love - hate are the same thing, because when something disappear and it counter part ceased to exist, it means they are the same thing. Think about a world where there is no sadness then it will be world where we never talk about happiness.

So you're saying there is a Proton, an Electron, and a Neutron. Positive Charge, Negative Charge, and a Neutral Charge. The TRINITY of REALITY. And Nirvana by the way is not the lack of Happiness or Sadness, it's a state of perfect bliss, happiness, and release from suffering/sadness, and the cycle of death & rebirth. It's liberation from Samsara, the eternal cycle of existence where a soul goes through Birth, Death, Rebirth, Happiness and Suffering, until the soul realizes its true self, its true nature, and liberates itself from this endless cycle by shedding all of its Karma, both good and bad Karma.

@@Montu96 You've captured a profound aspect of Buddhism beautifully. According to the Buddha's teachings, while scriptures lay out the framework, true understanding often comes through personal experience and guidance from those who have traversed the path themselves. This "Sangha," comprised of individuals who have achieved insight into the nature of existence, can offer invaluable guidance in understanding the root causes of suffering and breaking free from the cycle of samsara. These enlightened individuals may be found within monastic communities or even among ordinary people, quietly living their lives while embodying the teachings of the Buddha. Despite the challenge of identifying them, the possibility of realizing the ultimate goal of nibbana remains attainable through their guidance and one's own diligent practice and introspection.

My advice for you is that don't try to make it complicate with these Pali, first achieve Nirvan by yourself and then please explain it by your own experience. Just because something is in a book or agreed by everyone doesn't mean that it's the reality or the truth. You mind is the ultimate teacher. When you explain about perfect bliss, you are implicitly accept that there is imperfect bliss. Perfect bliss is always relative to it's counter part, and also relative to individuals and their experiences. Think about two people who are in jail. One for 1 year and another for 10 years. When they got free who has prefect bliss? Nirvan and Samsara is the same thing until you realize it.

I agree. I have been reading the Bible for 34 years, was a Rastafari, then studied Yoga, then Buddhism, then lately back to the Bible and Jesus but something changed and clicked in me, causing me to question what reality and the truth is. I wanted and still want and seek Liberation, not some rigid doctrine or beliefs or a punishing external God that you have to please and die first to go to a so-called heaven. I feel like most religions are prisons of thought, belief, doctrine and Christian churches, Pastors, Ministers and Preachers use Fear of going to Hell when you die as a way of mind control and not the true path to Liberation, enlightenment, freedom, peace of mind and body, harmony with all creation and life in general. I feel in my soul and heart much of what Jesus taught was simple and true-Love thy neighbor as you love thyself, judge not, don't steal, give what you can to your fellow brother and sister, help the poor, needy, afflicted and sick. But also, there are many truths in Yoga philosophy or Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Indigenous African and American tribal people's life practices and ways of thought. Who is saying there is a God? Mankind says there is a God. So the concept of God comes from within Man or Woman. Not an external being. It doesn't take a genius that we are part and of the Earth, the elements and nature without having to read a book or ask someone else or a supposed authority or teacher. What if you are blind? Or deaf? Or both? You are still One with the Universe, Creation and the flow of what we call Life, eternally. We humans are the only species to self-reflect and consciously judge things as good or bad, wrong or right. Animals don't have this problem. They just live and adapt to nature, seasons etc... Humans are the only species on earth to have consciously with intention-messed things up, polluted the water, food, poisoned animals and in turn poisoned ourselves. I believe heaven or hell can be a state of being on this earth in our lifetimes. Liberation and freedom from anxieties of this world is what I seek. To free myself from the bondage of fear and mental slavery, "None but ourselves can free our minds..."- brother Bob Marley. Anxiety is the most common Mental Illness for Americans in 2024. Why? We have created a System and Society which perpetuates bondage, material attachment, destruction, murder, alcohol and drug abuse, physical and mental slavery and general ignorance of Truth and how we should live. There are so many physical and mental diseases that Humans have created Big Pharmacy. There is a pill for everything now. What happened to humans? Way before the Church, the Bible, the Europeans, there were ancient peoples and societies and civilizations. Before Rome. Before Jesus, humans walked and lived in Harmony with the earth. Before the Church came with the Bible and the Sword and the Pope. I'm going to be 52 years old this month of July 2024, and my mind, body and soul is telling me there is a truth and way of Liberation that is within me, within all humans, if we choose to look deep within and let go of the distractions of Society and the Media and organized religions. Letting go of attachment to people, material possessions, cars, alcohol, drugs, tobacco, sex, the need for a wife or a husband and children, money, being alone, having no friends, growing an Organic vegetable garden, eating healthy, doing Yoga and Tai Chi stretching and deep breathing has brought me more freedom than a woman or a job and a car. It's just sad that suffering seems to be a way of life for a long time for humans. Liberation!!! JAH love to One and all. Unity and togetherness and Harmony. One Love, One People, One Earth.❤💛💚🙏🙏🙏🌈🔥✝✡🕉

Accept the things you feel is good or comfortable with. This does not mean you have to convince others to be like you because everyone of us is unique - no two persons are alike. You just need to stay in the middle lane - The Middle Way. Extreme left or right will tilt the fulcrum which will lead you to stress. However, being independent will sometimes lead you to no-where. The problem with the Christian religion is few people really understand the Bible. Most of it's teachings are written in Metaphors, what the Bible refers to as parables. One strong clue that's taught by the Bible is that "the father is in me". The father of course refers to God. The God in each and everyone of us is actually the spiritual being in us. We are actually two beings in one. A human being controlled by a conscious mind and a spiritual being controlled by the sub-conscious mind. This is why people that have died give testimonies to floating above their dead body and still knowing what's going on. The real eye opener though is learning how changing what you believe can truly change your life. Jesus speaks about this several times in the Bible, but he says how your belief can heal you. "Daughter your faith healed you". Jesus never said it's your faith in God that heals you. What I stated above about being two beings in one might be hard to believe but it's the only thing that makes sense. God could never watch billions of people at once but the spiritual being in each and everyone of us records everything we do through our sub conscious. I like Buddhism myself even though I started as a Christian. Meditation can be very eye opening and refraining from worldly desires which is taught by Buddhism and Christians alike leads to a path of enlightenment, Joy, Love Peace. Why not use everything at your disposal why choose? This way I can still hang out with the people at church and Love should be the basis for any religion. You may find out one day that all our spiritual friends wanted was us to love one another :)

I feel prayer and self-surrender to a higher spiritual being (like to Buddha himself or to a Bodhisattva) are important in Buddhism also. But the sincerity, integrity and spiritual quality of our intentions, when praying, is most important. Sometimes I find myself praying to the Buddha or to Bodhisattvas for grace and guidance. I think they are compassionate and aware of our sufferings, and can help even though they are not physically present. In Tibetan Buddhism there are many mantras for invoking the presence of Buddhas. I don't know if in the other Buddhist schools have this also, but I think at least some do.

Up to a point. Western philosophy stems from Plato and Aristotle, with their ideas on rationalism and empiricism. So everything has to be proven or given a convincing argument. There are no otherworldly aspects to it. It is entirely secular. Buddhism may be nontheistic, but it does have a belief system, that is something they believe in that cannot be proven. That is their belief in reincarnation. There is no evidence that happens, and it can lead to outcomes that western philosophy find hard to comprehend or justify.

Here are some thoughts that I believe the Buddha would say if here today. All wisdom comes from experience but not all experience leads to the truth. Buddha saw in his day many philosophies and many teachings of others he encountered on his journeys. However, he noticed one very important thing and that is that these philosophies or teachings did not all agree. So his question was how could a person know especially in the absence of divine proof? This is where I think Buddha separated himself from a belief in divine worship. To him the most tangible evidence for truth came from his own experiences and his own inner thoughts. I think he believed that he and everyone else, had by default, the ability to truly discover and recognize truth, but it had to come from within. He felt that a belief based on the belief of others was not to be trusted. I totally agree with this even though I personally believe in a higher power. If Buddha never taught there was a higher power or power greater than himself, then he no doubt didn't think divinity wasn't necessary or perhaps shouldn't be necessary to explain them. I suppose he reasoned that without the Divine universally present religions of his day were more likely only teaching some person's views and not God's. Hence trust your own instincts rather than trust another. Very practical thinking I must admit
