For example, its normal to have a house in the countryside and a condo in the city. Therefore we don't pay rent or mortgages. Native Sofians such as myself inherited properties. So, this offsets the high food prices. Plus, most families have more than a single source of income. But basically the fact that most families own their home, is their saving grace.

Salaries and pensions get actualized every year at least to cover the inflation, so we don't get poorer. It's actually slowly improving. It looks like its becoming heavily corporatized with large supermarkets and lots of expensive American products. I just got back from 42 days in Corsica and Italy, and those supermarkets look more American than anything I've seen in Italy. And the US is building the largest military base in Europe there I found out. I appreciate you showing me this as I am now taking it off my list to visit. I am an American who doesn't want to travel to European countries that are being heavily influenced by American/British corporate culture

Yeah, as a family, we're not anything extraordinary in Australia and our household income is around AUD$21,700 / month (£11,000 / month), and many of these prices are dearer than what we pay. Must be difficult on a Bulgarian salary. Maybe that supermarket is an expensive city one?

Prices on most food seemed about half price, compared to American supermarkets. However, the cost of dairy over there astounds me. You can get 1/2 gallon (2L) of milk here for $1.59, paying almost $4.00 for the same amount is a real shock to the system. Any idea why milk in eastern Europe is so costly, when everything else is so cheap?
@FoxyBoxery8 ай бұрын

Agriculture was mostly destroyed in the 90s. Bulgaria used to export food to the former Communist countries in Eastern Europe, now it imports food. Simple things like butter are twice as expensive compared to London. The quality is dubious too - the feta doesn’t contain cow milk, forget about sheep milk, but replacement ingredients. Same with the meat products. Tons of businesses make these, but there is no supervision, so they put whatever they can find. They are not happy with 20-30% profit, they want 200-300% profit, so the owner can buy a more expensive car than his neighbour. That’s the mentality. As a Bulgarian, I know what I am talking about.

This really helps to make some estimate ( 10-june-2024) Some supermarket items are even more expensive then in the Netherlands. How come? Is it because most staple stuff is home made in rural area's? (low demand) In The Netherlands minimum wage (40h/w) is about 2k/mnth Bulgarian minimum wage is about 0,5k/mnth some would asume all items would be 1/4 of the dutch price...

I'm Bulgarian and I have no idea why the prices hiked so much. People that have family abroad have told me that food prices in Germany are lower than in Bulgaria which is astonishing to me, considering that we import half of the products seen in our shops. It's mostly false inflation in my opinion. If you've ever travelled Bulgaria by road or train you'd have seen the vast fields of sunflowers. Most if not all sunflower oil brands on the market are Bulgarian. You CANNOT tell me that such a massive reserve of sunflower seed suffered inflation to the point of hiking the price from 1,70лв to 5,00лв - 7,00лв in the worst days of the inflation. It's not like the sun and the rain got inflated, too. It's mostly greed. There used to be a local market near where I live that had consistently low prices even amidst the inflation. Their produce went up 0,30лв maximum. Unfortunately they were shut down to build better market stalls and still haven't opened which lead me to start hunting for low prices. Some of the price difference is insane. I've seen tomatoes for 2,60 on one stall and similar tomatoes for 5,60 on the one next to them. It's a free for all.

@kristianivanov130810 ай бұрын
In my opinion prices are hugely determined by demand. When you think about it logistics and transportation of a product would cost fairly the same to Sofia and to Bucharest. However, in Bulgaria the same product will be in much less demand, simply because the population is some 10 times smaller than Romanias. That being said by the time Bulgaria distributes 1 shipment, Romania would have completed 3. And things are quite different between imported and local goods.
