I really appreciate your advice to the people to buy food and goods from the local shops so we can support them , that was really nice mate. Btw for your advice what is the best option for exploaring city's is get lost , that's true :D I lost my self in Florence ( Italy ) and that was one of the best experience which I had and meet a lot of nice people . In fact a lot of younger Bulgarians speak English quite well. This is because some had private English language lessons or have studied English at school /university. Me, as a Bulgarian, can say that I know English, because I had lessons in kindergarten, learnt English in school and attended private English language lessons. Also, when I was a kid (in the late 90s-early 00s), I used to watch Cartoon Network, which was entirely in English, not like now, when it is completely dubbed in Bulgarian. I love when I have the opportunity to freshen up my skills in conversations with foreigners or when I write something. Besides English, I also learnt German in school and I also speak Russian. In university I also learned Latin and Ancient Greek, because I studied for a BA and MA in Archaeology. Now I'm a PhD student in Classical archaeology at Sofia University, redacting my PhD thesis.

Haha, that takes me back. Yeah, I also started my English journey on Cartoon Network and in kindergarten as well. School and the internet also helped. You had CN from 7:30 AM to 10:00 PM then it would switch over to TCM in the night. Sadly, Cartoon Network got fully dubbed in 2008-2009 and they completely did away with Turner Classic Movies.

Don't ask elder people in Bulgaria whether they speak or not English - they usually don't :) , since they were young during the Soviet times and during Soviet times they were teach Russian (all of them) as it was mandatory language. Ask people from 10 to 40 years old and you will notice, that more than 80% of them speak English :) P.S - Even my 4 years old daughter now understands English better than me when I was 10 years old, thanks to all the cartoons we play , which are mainly in English :)

Recently I've been surprised that even though they have studied Russian at school, most of them either don't speak it well or can't have a conversation at all. I don't have a particularly good opinion about my Russian level, but as I am learning it better I'm gaining more confidence, since I see that there's very few non-native Russian speakers around here that really speak well. They remember 'something' but they can rarely get a joke, a nuance or a wordplay. Knowing 'some' Russian and really having a grasp on that language are two very, very different things. As it is, of course, with English, or any other language in that matter. Many young Bulgarians' English (my age included, I'm 36) speak as much English as many of their older counterparts speak Russian... Bulgarian school is not the best place to learn languages. That I know for sure. From the eight languages I speak, I've learned only English at school, but I've studied in the American College in 8th grade. Bulgarian schools give a "How are you?" "Up-down" level of English :D

Varna is very near some famous Black sea resorts like Sunny Beach, Golden Sands, Albena, and it's a tourist city. Locals work there and deal with tourists most of the year. It's the biggest port and sea faring is popular among locals. I think there's a naval academy and prolly at least 1 sea faring high school which teaches students about ships, navigating the world, languages, etc. It's only natural that locals speak many languages... it's a lot different inland, especially outside the top 5 cities and the cities situated on the Black sea.

I lived in Varna for several years (I’m Swedish and an English teacher) and have travelled more or less everywhere in Bulgaria. Whether people speak English or not is very closely linked to their age. Young people - up to 28 or so - usually speak very good English, which they learn in school. People over 50 of course speak fluent Russian, which THEY learnt in school, but no English, so Russian (which I speak) is a must if you want to travel outside the main tourist destinations. Between age 30/35 and 50, most people speak only Bulgarian - not an easy language to learn, and I have never met an expat who managed it!

I have been saying, just like others that for ages now. He really does even look Bulgarian, his facial features, all of that. Yes, he has a British accent, but we saw he's a polyglot and speaks Spanish and French just as well. I really think even sometimes he's speaking broken Bulgarian, just on purpose to hide that fact. There's something interesting and different to him, that doesn't make him seem like a pure Brit. Can't put my finger on what exactly is that. Just like Bald and Bankrupt actually used to live here in Bulgaria and that's one of the reasons he hasn't made a vlog in the country, but he shared that fact once and didn't speak about it again. There really are some mysteries in these city vloggers lore hahah. Although I'd say Justin is way better and not creepy like Bald, I think we all know all the controversies around him. Justin doesn't seem a creep like Bald or other vloggers, like Kurt Caz who most obviously is a drug addict.

@dwartbg1 where did Bald and bankrupt say he used to live in Bulgaria? Are u sure about that? He made a video from Bulgaria recently and didn't even know about the currency, seemed oblivious to the fact BG was not actually a Soviet Republic and seemed ignorant about the country as a whole... I read he used to live in Belarus for like 5 years and was married there, did u confuse those 2 countries by any chance?

Here in Varna you can meet people from any part of the world, many Russian speaking people from the USSR area, Armenians, Jewish, Turkish, Greeks, Gypsies, but also English, German, Indian, Caribbean, USA, Australian peoples, and don't forget Asian and African peoples. In some pubs and bars you can meet all of them together. Cheers and thanks for the video!

I am a Bulgarian, born in Varna. Lived there for the first 20 years of my life. Now I live in Vienna, AT for the last 25 years. It was very interesting to see this video. BTW it started near the place where I studied German and English, because the First Language School in Varna was close to there. That is where many of us learn languages. Wonderful video. Great content.

In Bulgaria people are educated and generally speak foreign languages. Unlike the USA, Great Britain, France, Spain, Italy... countries I have been to where it is extremely rare to meet a person who can speak a foreign language. The people there speak only their own languages. I have personally studied and speak Russian (a language that is Slavic and is very close to Bulgarian), Italian and English. The German language is also very popular in Bulgaria. Many people also speak French.

We also have something we call folk dances and OOH, IF YOU SEE OUR "дунавско" YOU WILL WANT TO FAINT If you want to see more, just search for Bulgarian folk dances Watching from varna❤️🇧🇬

Thank you for that fabulous video, Justin! You really earned a subscriber! I'm Bulgarian and I also speak several languages, but the moment I heard you speak Russian I was really impressed, because there was no accent or anything, you really strive to learn languages with pronunciation, colloquialisms, slangs and all. Even if you can't read Dostoevski in original, you have the base already, you can build upon it, it's a great language with many ways to express yourself and many ways to say (or not say) something. Russian humor is akin to English humor and I like it a lot as well. Very, very rare for a Westerner to speak such a good Russian, congrats! Era una sorpresa grandisima también oirte habler español tan fluente con la chica dominicana. You apparently always learn the basic words of the language of every country you visit, and that's the way to go! I always find a common tongue with almost every person on Earth as well, and if we don't share one, there's always a way to understand each other :D As the old uncle of a friend of mine says, "I speak all languages, but when I speak too much, my hands start to hurt" You're a very nice person and if you ever come to Sofia, make sure to write me a message at apostolov(at)me.com to have a rakia (or two) together! Cheers!

I am very glad, that I saw your video. It is so interesting to see how a foreigner see Bulgaria. I was used to love this kind of walking - to "lost" my self in Sofia and other cities. I am Bulgarian. Really didn't knew some of the beautiful things that you showed in the video. Mekitsas are very tasty and really special food from childhood. Really didn't know that they are mekitsas with other things. I have been to Varna 2 or 3 times. I will definitely see your other videos. In Varna is hotter than Sofia. And this winter is warmer than it must be.
