Dear Justin. I want just to say you are so intelligent and nice person. I hope you enjoy your time in Varna and one day we will see you again. I really appreciate your advice to the people to buy food and goods from the local shops so we can support them , that was really nice mate. Btw for your advice what is the best option for exploaring city's is get lost , that's true :D I lost my self in Florence ( Italy ) and that was one of the best experience which I had and meet a lot of nice people . @@J.E.Eto be fair, were you looking for directions or to detect how many Bulgarians can/not speak English? Coz if it was the first - then you should have asked them in another of your languages (French? Whatever else you speak) for the directions of the place you were going to. I usually do this. Always find someone to answer my question - wherever in the world I am. It is for sure better if you speak a few more languages.

In fact a lot of younger Bulgarians speak English quite well. This is because some had private English language lessons or have studied English at school /university. Me, as a Bulgarian, can say that I know English, because I had lessons in kindergarten, learnt English in school and attended private English language lessons. Also, when I was a kid (in the late 90s-early 00s), I used to watch Cartoon Network, which was entirely in English, not like now, when it is completely dubbed in Bulgarian. I love when I have the opportunity to freshen up my skills in conversations with foreigners or when I write something. Besides English, I also learnt German in school and I also speak Russian. In university I also learned Latin and Ancient Greek, because I studied for a BA and MA in Archaeology. Now I'm a PhD student in Classical archaeology at Sofia University, redacting my PhD thesis.

Haha, that takes me back. Yeah, I also started my English journey on Cartoon Network and in kindergarten as well. School and the internet also helped. You had CN from 7:30 AM to 10:00 PM then it would switch over to TCM in the night. Sadly, Cartoon Network got fully dubbed in 2008-2009 and they completely did away with Turner Classic Movies.

Varna is very near some famous Black sea resorts like Sunny Beach, Golden Sands, Albena, and it's a tourist city. Locals work there and deal with tourists most of the year. It's the biggest port and sea faring is popular among locals. I think there's a naval academy and prolly at least 1 sea faring high school which teaches students about ships, navigating the world, languages, etc. It's only natural that locals speak many languages... it's a lot different inland, especially outside the top 5 cities and the cities situated on the Black sea.

Hi. Little bulgarian here with some interesting fact about Baba Martha celebration: At 1st of March and before that we buy or handmade these "talismans" named Martenitsa/Martenitsi (the name comes from the bulgarian name of March - Marth). We give them to each other only on the 1st of Marth and we remove them when we see signs of spring like blooming trees or flowers, birds coming back for the summer, ect. The tradition says that we have to put them only on fruth trees, so they give as many fruts this year. This sayng is not lost, just not used at the big cities like Varna, because there are more ordinary trees than fruit ones. Also the ordinary trees are HUGE and there is not big chance to put martenitsa on them, so that's how I'm analazing the fact that one you saw is on a bush, and probably someone was very lazy and just went with it. Sometimes the signs of spring just come in April, sometimes on March, and sometimes even before March, like these past two years, so it depends. 😊

All Bulgarians under 50 speak English and a lot over 50s do so also! The older pensioners dont, basically because they werent taught it at school (Russian they got) + no internet, satellite, TV back then! (50s/60s).

You should come to Sofia, it is one of the best spots in Bulgaria. Also, go to Tsarevo in the summer if you have the opportunity. It is the best city in Bulgaria in my opinion as a Bulgarian

Another great episode, Justin! I was born in 1975, in the soviet era. We studied russian and english from elementary school. We were the first kids to start elementary at 6 instead of 7yo. And my parents signed me up to a kindergarden with english learning even before school.

Hello fellow bulgarian here. great video! I want to say that i dont find anything bad in speaking english in foreign countries, its okay for me, its the most broad spoken language and its an opportunity knowing it especially when it comes to communicating with tourist, but please to every local english speaking person, dont judge the people that they dont speaking english in their homeland no matter if they just dont want speaking it or they dont know it. Me personally i cant speak english quite well, im better at writing it for some reason, maybe because i have time to formulate my sentence and i know how difficult learning a new language is.

In Bulgaria people are educated and generally speak foreign languages. Unlike the USA, Great Britain, France, Spain, Italy... countries I have been to where it is extremely rare to meet a person who can speak a foreign language. The people there speak only their own languages. I have personally studied and speak Russian (a language that is Slavic and is very close to Bulgarian), Italian and English. The German language is also very popular in Bulgaria. Many people also speak French.

as a Bulgarian I think most of the young generation - 30-35 years old and younger speak and understand English. but the older people used to speak Russian and German .I am surprised to see the Dominican Republic lady to make mekici.

Hello, Justin, liked this video so much and it's the first one of yours I'm watching... I want to share my experience as an answer why you shouldn't be surprised that so many people speak English in Bulgaria... For example I haven't got a single English lesson in my life, but there were many years I used Windows in English because there was no Bulgarian option... I am still using everything in English, communication with many people all over the world and my knowledge is constantly eveolving... So I'm sure there are many people in Bulgaria who are doing same as me... There are still some things without an option to use them in Bulgarian language and for example the Netflix who still does not have Bulgarian subtitles by any reason... Also I want to correct you that "Шунка" is not a sausage like as you mentioned it, but mean literally "Ham" :) What is left for me to do now is to watch more of your videos :) Keep up the good work mate !

Great video man, As a Bulgarian I can tell you we like our language but we also know that it isn't so easy to learn for foreigners :D I would say asking people below 30yrs old has like 80% or more chance they will know English because we kind of understand it's pretty much mandatory nowadays and many jobs require it. I saw Sofia and Varna but you've got to visit Plovdiv! Plenty of ancient roman ruins and cool places to visit.

Mekitsa isn’t actually a fast food. It is a traditional breakfast that our grandmothers used to/still make and are indeed amazing. I am in fact surprised that they sell them on the street as I have never seen that before. Typically, we eat mekitsi kinda like pancakes - with jam. A very common concept is jam with sirene 🤤 Sweet and salty is truly the best!🤩

Justin, please keep in mind that Varna is a port city and, together with Bourgas, was one of the most open to foreigners even during the socialist era. So they have traditions both in communicating with foreigners and also with different languages. If you go inland, especially among the older population, you won't find as many people speaking English. Young people yes - they learn it in school, from social media, computers, etc. they recognize it...
