This is a car with Japanese reliability though. Mostly its just a Miata, but it has a 1.4T multiair engine, but that engine has been around forever and is well known to be reliable. Cruising it will have as good or better fuel economy than the Miata, but when you floor it the Miata is way more efficient as the 1.4T tends to run rich on boost unless you get it chipped. Its not direct injected though which is a good thing, it means you never have to worry about fouling.

Late to the party here, I just picked up a 2018 Classica with the 6-speed manual and I love it. Yep, I like how he completely missed the fact that the 124 has significantly more torque than the miata. If he kept the revs in the 3-4k range, he'd see how much peppier the Fiata is. Yes, the NA Miata has more linear power delivery, but some people like the excitement from when a turbo kicks in.

I have the exact same car as shown, except mine is a manual. I bought mine two years ago new, after it sat on a Dealer's lot for almost two years. It's been fantastic. Nimble, fun to drive, good on gas, good top end power, great handling and fantastic stereo system. It's only been to a Dealer once for a fuel pump recall, which actually helped with a minor dead spot in the top end of the rev range. The only complaint I have is Fiat cheeped out on a TPM system on the Lusso which uses the ABS system rather than dedicated TPM sensors. So it goes off intermittently, but it's easy to reset. I get a lot of compliments on this car and my wife loves to drive it as well. Fantastic gearbox!
@ag4allgood11 ай бұрын
Its actually a much better TPMS & its telling you the tire pressure should be checked - not resetting the system every time it goes off ! How do I know ? Because I own a 2016 MX-5 Club soft top. I have a digital pressure gauge & use a air pump connected to the battery. Every season when the temperatures drop drastically there might be an alarm. Easy to check all 4 & fill them to 29.6 psi. Now what I don't like about the 124 besides its engine / clutch / is the upside oil filter ( elemental to boot ) buried under the air intake ! What a frickin mess to change out. Leaks oil in the lower engine compartment.

They needed to switch to the 1.3L to meet new European emission standards and Fiat CEO didn't want to pay for the switch. The 124 was supposed to be produced through 2026, but when Sergio Marchionne died and Michael Manley took over, it was doomed. Manley wanted all EVs, so the need to switch to the 1.3L Firefly was the perfect reason for him to stop production.

I have a 2018 Red 124 Spider Lusso. It has been perfect since day 1, especially with the 6 speed manual transmission. The most fun car I have ever driven, a real head turner. Not a single squeak, creak, or rattle, nor a single mechanical issue since I have owned it. One of the best kept secrets in small roadster convertibles. Made alongside the MX5 in Hiroshima, most Fiat haters think this car is a piece of junk, not realizing that for the most part its a Mazda clone. I own a Mazda CX-5, which I love, but chose this car over the MX-5 mostly because of its stying, and low-end torque (with the 6-speed manual). Not a car for the race track, just a fun car to cruise around in, with Italian sexiness, British sportiness, and Japanese build quality.

The clutch in the Fiats is much heavier in feel to the MX-5. Also the shift pattern feels much tighter / the turbo lag sucks which delays throttle response / plus the MX-5 is lighter feels much more athletic in the turns. Piece of junk ? I would not say that about the 124 Spyder roadster. I drove a 2017 Fiat 124 Spyder Abarth with a 6 speed manual. Then a 2016 Mazda MX-5 Club back to back so that was my feeling on the 124. That 2016 MX-5 Club soft top has a super light clutch / a naturally aspirated engine that gives instant throttle response. That 2016 MX-5 Club soft top sits in my garage for the past 6.75 years.

Fiat just doesn't have any brand recognition, at least here in the US. Few people know what Fiat is and the few who do are painfully aware of it's historically poor reliability. It's unfortunate because I think Fiat has come a long way since those times, but they've just never established much of a foothold here. The fact they're kind of known for making small cars doesn't help their case, since that's more of a European trend than it is here in the US where gas is cheaper and bigger is more common.

@Tamarocker88 Жыл бұрын
@@sly9263 On the contrary, Fiat has plenty of brand recognition. The problem is that the recognition dates back to the 60's and practically everyone in the USA associates Fiat with "HURR DURR FIX IT AGAIN TONY, FIATS ARE UNRELIABLE". No one wants to talk about the fact that JD Power ratings placed Fiat above the Scion brand, and Scions are bullet-proof Toyotas. A lot of the low scores in car ratings for modern day Fiat have to do with trivial things like hating the Blue & Me sound system or the interiors rattling and being cheap, not actual engine or major mechanical issues. The 1.4l multi-air is a tried and true perfectly reliable engine. I had my 500 Abarth until 70k miles when the clutch failed (and I only declined to repair it because the cost relative to the vehicle's value was not a good investment). Had the cost to repair the clutch been lower, I would have gladly kept the car until it was well and truly dead. It's a miracle for any heavily stressed high boost sports car to have a clutch last that long.

Yes you can & its called a Mazda MX-5 like Joe says the naturally aspirated engine with a manual is much more fun ! Also the MX-5 Miata handles much better than the 124 Spyder.
@DropTopTees11 ай бұрын
Your first statement is an opinion. Your second is demonstrably wrong. In head to head tests with professional drivers, the 124 beats the MX-5 ND. Time after time. The main reason is how the suspensions are set up. The MX-5 has more body roll. While less sophisticated drivers think that makes it feel more "fun", more advanced drivers realize it makes them slower through turns. A fairly common theme amongst pro drivers who have done the head to head tests is that the MX-5 "feels faster, while the 124 IS faster." And yes, the MX-5 will beat the 124 off the line by a small margin. A secondary reason is that, once the turbo is spooled up, the 124 is faster. But neither car is a drag racer. Both cars excel at cutting curves, autocross-type racing, canyon runs, etc. Any good 124 driver will simply keep their revs up and very slowly pull away from the MX-5. I think perhaps that is why you say the MX-5 is more fun - you get to watch the back of a 124. That is definitely a more pleasing experience than watching the back of the less pleasing aesthetic of the MX-5. As I always note however, you can't go wrong with either car; both are very good at what they do.
@ag4allgood11 ай бұрын
@@DropTopTees Even Joe agreed with me. The Fiat 124 is slow off the line waiting for the turbo to spool up. Professional drivers ? The video I watched said he loved the MX-5 & beat a Dodge Hellcat by 4 seconds around a race track. Who are these drivers that don't know how to drive ? Don't forget at 5000 rpms your done !
@DropTopTees11 ай бұрын
@@ag4allgood Neither car is an off-the-line kind of racer. If you want a drag racer, you buy a different car. MX-5s and 124s are twisty road, autocross style cars. The 124 is slightly better at that type of driving than is the MX-5 ND. Sorry, but it has been tested over and over and the 124s edges out the MX-5 ND. Don't forget, even the MX- 5 ND II has less torque than the 124. And it handles body roll better than the MX-5. Added together, it is slightly faster on a track or canyon run. In reality, the cars are even enough driver skill becomes the biggest factor in a head to head race. However, as I said, in head to head competitions where both professional race car drivers took turns with both cars, the 124 prevails. It is a tad more capable than it's sister.
@ag4allgood11 ай бұрын
@@DropTopTees MX-5 ND / ND2 are quicker off the line & will leave the 124 Spyder in the dust waiting for the turbo to spool up. Its also 150 pounds heavier than my 2016 Club soft top. Its throttle response makes it more aggressive & the super light clutch is buttery smooth. My car has the Bilstein shocks so the body roll is minimal. Also has the LSD so both rear wheels give it traction from the stop. MX-5 is a better daily drivers car by FAR ! 😎

My son has an Abarth Spider, and at 33000 it needs both rear hubs replacing because the suspension bushes are not available separately. Thankfully they are covered by warranty because they are almost £4500 to replace. But how long will they last?
@maptap66543 жыл бұрын
That is both gross for cost and mileage. But given the cost, I bet the next time you need them there will be an aftermarket option. Or just burn them out and replace them with polyurethane bushings (preferably greasable to avoid squeaks).

I'm torn between this and same year Miata. i prefer the Italian styling of the Fiat, but I'm worried it's not as fun to drive as the Miata. This is such a good looking car!

Looking at both currently in US (Maryland) . Question for those who own either - how is this servicing? I'm older (62) and remember the old Fix It Again Tony for FIAT - had an RX-7 when i was younger and loved. As I am not a self mechanic I'm wondering what the costs might run on service/maintenance - thanks.

Yes the fiat 124 spider makes a great preowned vehicle with japanese reliability to boot. This is a great convertible for people who just want a sporty looking convertible just like the original. The vehicle was never a hot performer. It was a pretty 2 seat convertible.
@tuxedoblackcat16804 жыл бұрын
Still love convertibles so much like this one and my dream convertible. And to be honest in my opinion, it looks a car that 16 year old kids could probably use to get to school or college on their own. and If I did have a convertible as my car, then I would have some fun going to school or college by myself.

It was never meant to be a drag race car. It is a canyon carver. That said, if you invest a bit of money, switch to forged internals and bore and stroke it, it will be a totally different type of beast.

I kinda like this 124 and I like the price and the smart easy to use top. I don't care much for the auto and with 22lbs of boost I doubt that much more could be pulled out of that small motor which is the deal breaker. Had they given this some real power they might still be selling them.
