All students in Ontario are required to take French classes for at least 5 years (grades 4 to 9), but almost nobody actually manages to learn french from those classes. The majority of people in Toronto are bilingual, but with combinations such as English/Cantonese, English/Italian, English/Tagalog, English/Russian, English/Punjabi, English/Farsi etc.

As far as I know the only province in Canada in which the french language is widespread is the Quebec province, apart from that all the other provinces are english majority.

Outside of Quebec there are small pockets of French-English speaking people but there has been a major growth in the past few decades of French immersion schools as well as more immigrants from all over the world who already speak French and now speak a decent amount of English to get by.

This one really interests me Anthony. Victor here again in Flint, Mi. I sent this video to Madame R. a French Canadian who teaches French in a high school here near Flint. Sometimes I sub for her. I finally made it to Quebec last summer and it was great to speak French there. Next up, Montreal. Unfortunately many high and junior high schools here are cutting back on their language classes. Spanish is doing well, French- so so and German has really taken a hit. Some of the better high schools do actually offer Chinese or Japanese by correspondence. Fortunately, Mott Community college (in Flint) and the University of Michigan Flint offer all these languages and more. My Brazilian Portuguese tutor is hoping to convince Mott to start a Portuguese program in a year or two.

French is the official language of Canada. It's like English. It has official status. Glendon was founded as a bilingual university college in the 1960s? I was a student there in 1978-1979. I'm sorry that it never became a French university college. The francophones in Ontario are hoping to get a French university going in Toronto shortly . I wish them the best of luck.

@@sasa90150 J'étais à Montréal au mois de juillet pendant 1 semaine à cause de mon travail et sérieux j'étais assez choqué de voir les employés de mon hôtel parler en anglais entre eux surtout que nous avons une loi qui exigent les employés à parler notre langue. Le problème est simple pour plusieurs Montréal est une exception dans la le Québec mais ce n'est pas le cas. Si tu veux parlé anglais il y a 12 autres provinces uniquement anglo. Le Québec est français, Montréal ou pas! Et oui les choses vont s'améliorer, il y a beaucoup plus de jeunes que l'on pensent qui s'intéressent à l'indépendance :) enfin bonne journée!

Chevk out Authentik: How to speak Canadian French. It'll give you a good sense. The videos are by a outgoing teenage boy . Ithink he's from Montreal. They're totally what you'd expect in that the kids have a blast, they"re silly and fun , revolve around their interests and you'll just enjoy their antics. I've caught a few. The one I mention here is one where he decides he's going to teach French to his non francophone followers .

@@Paula-of6gg It just depends on where the teachers are from. For some reason, a large percentage of French teachers in the English parts of Ontario come from abroad. My French teachers growing up were about 50/50 between Canadian French and European French so my French accent is a weird mix of both types.

@@Paula-of6gg There are more European immigrants who speak French in Ontario than there are Quebecois migrants, I suppose. Also, I got top marks in French in high school and I never really understood why we learned French in high school till I was in my late 20s. It never was taught to me that French was the other language of our country and not a foreign language. I'm sure every Quebecois knows that English is a Canadian official language though. They don't consider it to be a foreign language.

Le jeune homme interviewé à 1:16, 4:20 et 5:23 donne une vision tout à fait juste et véridique du ''bilinguisme'' au Canada et comment il se vit. Il a raison de dire que le bilinguisme Canadien est d'abord et avant tout un bilinguisme de façade, officiel sur papier, mais pas dans la réalité. Il est très difficile, voire impossible de vivre en français nulle part ailleurs qu'au Québec, une partie du Nouveau-Brunswick et l'est de l'Ontario.

"Canadian bilingualism" is a joke. Quebec is practically French only (with some exceptions in Montreal and on a more limited basis in Quebec city). New Brunswick is theoretically bilingual but for the most part English-speaking only. Very few Canadians outside of Quebec and New Brunswick speak French and yes that even includes Ontario. Sorry but even the U.S. has a greater claim to bilingualism in regards to Spanish than Canada does with French.

Montréal is half the population of Québec. The bilinguism rate is up to 43.6% in Québec which is the most bilingual province in Canada (second is New-Brunswick with 33,2%). Only 8% of anglophones are bilingual English-French and without Québec's anglophones it is only 6%. Those saying that Canadian bilingualism is a joke or untrue don't know what is meant by "bilingualism". The country as a whole is, meaning both federal and provincial governments provide services in both and all products sold generally have English and French on the packages to accommodate both. Individual provinces, however, can be considered either unilingual for either language or bilingual depending on demographics. Quebec is the only unilingual French province and New Brunswick the only bilingual province due to significant communities of each. Even the provinces that are unilingual English-speaking usually have compulsory French lessons everyday in school as well as French-immersion for those that wish to do do so. On top of that, there are also French schools in the English provinces and English ones in Quebec. As a result a significant part of our population are fluent in both.

Le monde a retreci beaucoup. Ca se peut que nous devons developper les programmes des langues secondes au niveau elementaire pour servir ces groupes d'immigrants qui sont ici maintenant. Il faut aussi comprendre mieux les pays d'ou ils viennent.

A large amount of people who live in Montreal, Quebec City, or New Brunswick are bilingual. Outside of the major Quebecois cities, many people only speak french, whereas outside of Quebec & New Brunswick, relatively few people speak french. There are of course some Ontario towns along the Quebec border which speak french also, as well as a small french community in Manitoba (it was once a much larger community.)

1/3 of the Canadian population speak french either as a first language or can at least understand it. The reason why people going to Canada might not notice french a lot is because most of french people live in Quebec, which make up for about 23% of the Canadian population, the remaining 7% mostly come from the maritime and some small community in the other province, the best place to go in Canada if you want to see bilingualism is probably New-Brunswick as it is the only province to have both french and english as a second language, in Quebec most people will mostly speak french and in the rest of Canada they will speak english.

C'est un petit monde propre a lui-meme, mais, le campus de Glendon est supposé d'etre un campus ou les francophones peuvent apprendre anglais et les anglophonces peuvent apprendre francais. Une salle pour le francais? Horrible! Quand j'étais la en 1978-1979, il y beaucoup de places pour communiquer en francais.

J'ai une question : ça veut dire quoi exactement l'expression «c'est pas évident» ? Dans cette vidéo, on l'a traduite en l'anglais comme «it's not obvious ». Je l'entends souvent cette expression, elle est très populaire parmi les francophones, surtout les français, et j'ai quand même l'impression qu'elle a pas mal de significations et que ça dépend du contexte en fait. Some foreigners learn "international French" at university. They don't learn Quebec French in Toronto generally. I was at Glendon for a years many decades ago and most of our profs were immigrants. Francophone, sure, but they spoke European French. It is probably the same at Queen's U. and at the University of Toronto. Actually, when i was at Glendon, the York main campus at a distance from Glendon had more French courses than Glendon did! True!

Au Canada, comme dans tous les pays du Nouveau-Monde, les langues européenes ont toutes évoluées pour réfléter l'histoire et la société des gens qui les parlent. Il est normal qu'un Brésilien ne parle pas comme un Portugais. De même, il est normal qu'un Canadien ne parle pas français de la même façon qu'un Français. Notre langue contient des archaïsmes et des amérindianismes. De plus, nous avons inventé des mots comme traversier et courriel pour remplacer des emprunts à l'anglais.

@@andresllinas8594 French don't refuse to speak English they just have poor vocabulary and a bad accent so they pretend not to speak english at all to avoid to be embarrassed in front of English speakers . The fluency in English also depends on the generation: younger people like me tend to speak better english than older people because they didn't learn it or they hadn't time to practice. We are blamed not to speak others languages than ours but American in general speak only their language and nobody cares. ( This thing irritates me)

One was from U of T, I think. When I was there in 1978-1979, it was very white. Some European immigrants and Quebec immigrants, but mostly English-speaking Canadians.

French Canadians Families must have more children then other new immigrants and new Canadians French Canadians must have what used to be normal sized families, such 6. 8, 10, 12 children. Quebec lots of French of course but they aren't the only speakers of French in Canada. Now on to Acadians who are a bit different than Quebecers New Brunswick is the only officially bilingual (meaning French English) province French in the Maritimes is mainly if not only Acadian people. Nova Scotia has quite a few Acadian people. Here in PEI has Acadian people mainly in the town Wellington and surrounding area. Ontario of course Ottawa area other than that I don't know. Then there is the prairies mostly Manitoba, Saskatchewan where Metis people speak French and possibly some First Nations languages. Honourable mention the state of Maine it's between the Maritimes and Quebec so loads of French history there and from what I can read about there are speakers of French there.
