With car sharing companies popping up every year between the spell of 2016 to 2021, this mode of transport is fast gaining traction, but is it worth the time and the money?

More residents are giving up their vehicles lately due to the high cost of COEs and ERPs. The high cost of private and commercial vehicles undoubtedly add up to the cost of doing business and living in Singapore. However, “sales of high-end cars soar but sink for general market“. Super-luxury car sales went up 13.1% (Lamborghini +111%) while the general market cars went down 12.7% at the end of 2018. This shows the common man in the street is unable to keep pace with the cost while the super rich has no problem at all. Even the small man, the motorcyclist is not spared - he has to pay $0.25 to enter Orchard Road ERP from Scotts Road at 4.15 pm.

I'm a foreigner working in Singapore. I'm grateful how public transport is great here, but still it's not enough for me. I'm looking to get a motorcycle now, because I'm tired of commuting 1hr+ per day to work each way. I want to be able to travel to remote corners of Singapore on off days to relax and explore, but I'm tired of spending more time on the bus than time at my destination. I earn well enough for myself, but nowhere near enough to afford a car or justify one. It's just strange to me how wanting to get the cheapest personal transportation here is a luxury, and a point of social contention. If anything, I have to say that I took the freedom of mobility in my home country for granted, and here, being able to drive just yourself to any destination at any time is a luxury reserved for the rich.

@@kamaruleffendi alright man, sit down first, because the rules regarding electric scooters in Singapore is a massive minefield There are two types of "electric scooters". First, we got PMDs (personal mobility devices), this includes electric kick scooters, hoverboards, segways etc. In technical terms, a device that can move SOLELY on an electric motor without any extra assistance. These are as good as useless in Singapore. The only paths they can ride on are dedicated cycling paths (which are not dedicated at all, they're basically a bigger pavement). These paths are disconnected and exist on maybe 1 out of 10 pavements. You can't even use them on the road, or pavements that are not marked as "cycling paths". Next we got the PABs (power assisted bicycles), bicycles with electric motors. They're speed locked to maximum 25kph, but can go on road. The rules though, is that it must be *power-assisted*, that means the electric motor only kicks in when you pedal. However you can't just pick one up and ride like a bicycle. They need to be registered just like a car or motorcycle, with a license plate; and to ride one, you have to be at least 16 years old and pass a theory test to get a PAB license. Electric motorcycles that can go above 25kph barely exist in Singapore at the moment. And yes they are considered full motorcycles, so you need a motorcycle license to ride one. Like I said I'm just a foreigner in SG, but if you ask my opinion, I'd say you can't convince me that SG isn't actively trying to make personal mobility as hard as possible. Idk, maybe they want to advertise an image of "the country where everyone take bus and we're all happy"

Freedom of mobility is a two edge sword in population dense countries. While it's great to move around on your own, it's a nightmare if everyone are on their own car during rush hour.

Regular Tribecar user here. Clarification on fuel policy - it is dependent on the type of car rented. Generally speaking, I will top-up sufficiently to avoid activating the low fuel warning indicator. For cleanliness, it is hit and miss. The Tribecars that I have rented are generally very clean both on the interior and exterior. Maxim: If you take care of the car like your own, others using it may feel compelled to do likewise.

Singapore has the highest car rental users in percentage in the world is because Singapore car is the most costly in the world. I have used car rentals for several months and tried several companies including tribecar and bluesg. The savings by car rental over car ownership is really not worth it for me, even if the saving can be $1000. The biggest issue is that most of the time I need car at last minute and there is no rental car available. Second concern is the high insurance excess cost that makes me nervous when driving. And then there is the hassle of going to get the car with 10min walk to the car and then drive to my home to pick up my family members. So no more car rental for me. I'd rather use public transport and Grab/Taxi, or own a 2nd hand budget car.

It’s a good option for me since I have a small baby so taking grab is not an option (no baby car seat). It is always A pain to call Comfort and I do not really like to travel with my baby not in car seat. Plus there are tribe cars and get go just in my neighbour. The getgo car is literally in the car park next to my home😂.

11:30 "key not found" the alert in car sharing services it usually arises sometimes when the key is just a touch out of range (some share providers store the keys in a container in the glovebox), or if it is app controlled, the car sharing service converted the car to run from the app through bluetooth so practically no key required. If you get the car running, most of the time it's a non-issue.

hey guys...no story lah. Was my uncle's car and I took it over when it had 2 years left on the COE. Fell in love with her and we've stayed together since! Believe it or not, she's quite easy to maintain because everything is manual, there are hardly any electronics. So if one door lock is not working, just don't use that door! ha ha!

Car sharing is make sense for me as a person who doesn't own a car only if these conditions are met. More than 3 destinations in one trip, the destination is inaccessible by public transport, ferry my 5 family members with kids can be more economical for short distance and just a few hours, and fun for driving occasionally.

Encountered the same problem as the dude. Used Tribecar and got into an accident (judgement error on my end). Paid abt $11k+ in excess and still never got a breakdown until now despite several chase. Made upfront payment on the excess the very next day and still received a lawyers letter from the third party several months later.

The reason it scares people got a friend who had a minor accident and needed some minor body work but the company charges him 4K for that. I told him what the heck! I repair my car for minor body work for only a few hundred.

I usually rent from shariot and check vehicle mileage. On peak I'll rent up to 7hrs for festivities. For errands up to 5hrs. Quick errands less than 2hrs but the best part is cheaper than ride hailing to and fro.

Owning a car in Singapore is very expensive (World number 1). This is because of our COE tendering system which favoured the rich only. To be fair to every Singaporean, Government Agency in charge should use or apply HDB, BTO bidding system for a flat in order to get a Certificate to buy a car. The number of car as set by the Government will not be increased which in line with Government policy. Besides, no one is accused of making money out of COE. Using HDB, BTO bidding system is very fair to every Singaporean who need to own a car.

As a driver on our roads for a decade, I am not sure the Prof's comparison is comparing apple-to-apple as he makes a LOT of assumptions there, I would not forget the various controls placed by the authorities which range from the COE, ERP which has already altered the way road drivers utilize the roads ; all in all, I would curious to read and study the findings. In any case, I did find this episode a good introduction to the topic and maybe a further follow up can be done in a couple of years ?

in most cases once you have an accident severe enough for the airbags to be deployed, usually the insurance will write off the car and you'll be compensated at open market value of the car. open market value would be decided by the insurance company and 11k is a small sum and a ton of savings already!

@@lzh4950 The by far biggest cost factor for me is the COE, and that is an artificially created cost factor to decrease the number of car owners. Anyway, my car is 24 years old. Once having the COE the other costs are not significant. I drive 5000 - 7000 km per year. It has 155000 km on the clock. What has not broken and lasted until now will probably not easily break. The value of my car is already 0 since long, no more loss from deprecation. Steven Chia might be able top tell you something similar with his Merc. It's the people, who want to have always the latest Beemer.

40km a day is not high, its about 2 to 3 tank of petrol per month and only 14600km/year. This is normal mileage when we are buying 2nd hand cars. I consider 10k/year is low, 15k/year is normal, 20k/year is high mileage when hunting for 2nd hand cars.

I think no one “really” want to solve our traffic /commute problems. For example if really want less people drive . The best way may be that your children can only go to schools near home and you are banned to drive students to school. Many problems will solve ( like traffic near school zone) . Less people will need to drive. If orchard road has one lane only for buses . Then taking bus will be faster . Less people will drive into town. Some roads with planning I think can be done.

Singapore has a quota system for non-public vehicles. No further vehicles are allowed unless the old one is taken out of the traffic. Best to use public transport.

Of course they can. Especially since the average kms driven per car in Singapore is 17500. A lot of people have a car and drive less than 10000 per year. With carsharing that number goes up and makes it more affordable.

Perhaps we could also consider the time factor for car-sharing vs car ownership. Having to take a 30 minutes bus ride to the car each way result in a 1 hour bus commute each day. Time is also spent on cleaning the car inferior and taking photos of the exterior damages. The low availability of cars also makes it tough for last minute plans. Car sharing may suit certain individuals but it is certainly not for me.

It will only make sense when 50% of the existing cars are on several competitive platforms (just like the Government funded competition in telcos and utilities) , which will produce a more efficient and fair system that evaluates insurance premiums according to driver's experience . Some tech and social credit system is necessary to detect smoking and anti social behaviours . And maybe a cultural shift like everyone should be wearing their personal white driving gloves. Not too difficult to change these habits when COE hits 200K.

The high insurance excessive cost and poor customer service is a deal-breaker. I was a happy car-sharer until there was a small dent found on the car and it took Tribe 2 weeks to notify me. Instead of "recommending me to their appointed workshop to fix it and/or seeking a second opinion if the repair costs are too high" (as stated on Q&A from their website); they charged me $400 for the dent, 2 days of down time ($150) and GST at 8%, which came up to a whooping almost $600. To be honest, for the small dent I could easily use a day or few hours, drive the car to a workshop and get it fixed with less than $600.

I don’t think Steve Chia is the targeted customer for car sharing platforms like Getgo or Tribecar. Wrong sample size - residential area (perhaps some landed , private property area) not close to any major parking areas. Very bias reporting. These car sharing services usually target folks who don’t own a car, but needed to drive on a certain day to run errands or just have a lot going on that day. Maybe CNA shd have gotten someone who don’t have a car, but could drive and use this services.

I just used Getgo today after watching this video. The main advantage for the car sharing services is that there is a car available next to my place. The cost is slightly higher than renting from private company for full day, but it is worth it since I have a one year old baby and traveling with a baby to a remote location is a pain.

When you(Steve) live in a condo/land area, there is not much car sharing option around you. But if you live in an HDB, there are a lot of service providers available. Although car sharing has a lot of issue and need to improve, I prefer using car sharing service as I have less liability in terms of living cost.

Yes. It's just a principle of supply and demand. There's simply a higher ratio of people living in HDB than land/condo area. We also know almost every land/condo will have their own private transport.

Singapore should do away with the notion of making Cars only available for the Super rich. Given that Singapore has extremely low birth rates and it’s society is aging rapidly. Families with the Old and the very young should be given a chance or priority to own at least a basic family car at a lower cost. This will greatly improve their standard of living. Singapore so convenient no need car.. mrt is conveniently connected to Malls. No traffic jam, no headache to find carpark. Even handicap in Singapore can move around freely better than in Malaysia without car they literally handicap cannot go anywhere..

Great article. Very eye-opening. However, perhaps you could have interviewed the insurance companies with regards to the policies that are taken up by the car sharing companies since they stated that the excess is determined by the policies (yet interestingly the sharing companies could lower the excess rate by 40% on their own). 11 thousand SGD for the accident? Was there even any coverage by insurance? Also, you could have spoken to the sharing companies about the maintenance of the vehicle. I wouldn't want to rear-end a BMW because my rental/sharing car's brakes weren't up to the task.

you are absolutely right. the $11k example is just insane. That is a massive deterrent for people becoming car sharers. At Drive lah excess can be reduced to $0. That is real peace of mind. Also, if the damage is lower then you will only pay the actual costs. It seems that with the other players are charging the full amount of excess even if repair for the damage is much less.

Car repairs after an accident - you will never get the breakdown as the car rental company, insurance company may be in cahoot with the workshops to have lump sump repairs - after all they all benefit at your expense, the customers.

For a small savings, you have to face uncertainty if you are able to book a car when you want it time spent travelling to and fro the rental car's location deal with potentially dirty, smelly, disgusting environment god forbid you get into an accident, any savings you think you might have would be wiped out 10-20 fold. If you really need the car on a ah-hoc basis, taxi/PHV is a much better option IMO

GetGo’s cars are poorly maintained. I don’t believe they ever check and clean the cars, as claimed in thus documentary. Many users are inconsiderate and don’t take the trouble to top up fuel and water, or clean the interior after use. From used face masks to mud, scratches, dents, stench, it is overall, horrible. Yes, you would have to spend time wiping down the car, filling up the tank and checking the tires. Factor that into your rental time. Secondly, the connection to car app often does not work, and you would need to waste time getting customer service to intervene. Customer service also do not check inspection photos uploaded.

I have used Drivelah! And find that the cars are much cleaner and better maintained, which make them safer to drive. There are owners living near me who list their cars with Drivelah. But charges are by 24 hour blocks, so if you only need a car for a few hours, you may find the charges too high.

I just got in an accident last week when Get Go driver who doesn't have a driving licence bang the 2nd car and 2nd car bang on my car. The grey area is anyone who can book the car although the account belongs to him and his register driving licence belongs to his dad. Now on the road, we have already got a few cases using car sharing to practice or driving on the road. I used to drive bluesg for about 3 years till I own my own car. The initial phase was good where there were less user, cars were generally clean, but when more people adopted car sharing, the car became so dirty. I have once experience having strong vomit smell in the vehicle, no aircon and there was no compensation. It gets so bad when you have to wait for couple of hour for car and the need to reach your destination within 45min for the parking lot you book. As I stay far from city center, reaching town within 45min comes with risk of me having to drive faster, else I could have missed the parking lot and have to find alternatives. This is a major problem where during the day time, most lots in the city center were fully occupied. There were also once, I walked 20min to pick up the car and it was not able to start, wasting lots of time, screwing up travel plan. So its not just about the amount saved, but the hassle you have go through.

I have an idea -> just take grab/gojek. If you like driving that much, then allow an option where the driver/owner of the car allows you to drive the moment they pick you up, but at a slightly higher fares and also you pay the premium if anything happen to the car. Singapore has world class public transportation compared to neighbouring country. Using car sharing is actually quite useful if you are travelling with friends or family or grocery/IKEA trip, otherwise it is wise to just take public transit. If you don’t mind the cost then I honestly suggest ride hailing service. With people who abuses the car sharing cars I really don’t want to risk myself getting involved in accident and I have to suck up all the excess liability due to the car condition (you won’t know the car exactly condition until you drive it).

Changi to Tuas is more than 30km each way - remember you can't drive straight haha. From Jewel to Tuas Checkpoint is 49.9km via PIE and 48.7km via ECP/AYE. If one "drives" only 20km a day - just take the bus, why bother with ride hailing and car sharing?

With the convenience of public transportation, I don't see why people would consider car sharing. You go through the extra hassle of having to book a car and time slot, deal with subscription fees, and potentially having a dirty car, only to have minimal savings compared to owning a car. Plus some of the cars like BlueSG only fit 2 passengers, which means families won't even consider car sharing. And on top of that - you need to park at a designated spot, and being a car, you still face traffic jams on the roads. At that point, just take public transportation - it's way cheaper and probably won't take much longer than driving.

Some points you got it wrong, Bluesg can fit 4 people comfortably, there’s backseats but only 2 doors so you have to move the front seat forward. There’s a reason why people still use carsharing instead of public transportation even though ours is top class. It’s more convenient for people with mobility issues. Imagine your family needs to go to a family gathering, would it be viable to ask your ageing grandparents to take public transport ? So your only options are taking a private hire or use carsharing and with the ridiculous surge pricings on the platform apps nowadays, some people opt for carsharing instead. The extra hassle of having to book a car and a time slot with the convenience of getting a car so readily available for just a few hours of usage, with transparent prices near where you live is minor as compared to calling a leasing company, enquiring for cost and availability, paying a rental deposit and going over to the workshop or collection point, signing a waiver , with a minimum usage of 24 hours. Potentially getting a dirty car either way. . 6. This serves a need, a need where public transport doesn't fulfill the purpose/outcome the person have at the point of booking a shared car.
