Can you save money by taking Grab or any other private-hire service around, compared to owning a car? And how much cheaper is it?
In this episode, we sent our host Nicole (@superdamncool) on an experiment to take a cab everywhere for two weeks, to see how it fares as an alternative mode of transport against owning a car, renting a car or taking public transport.
This is TBH, a new series where we investigate, experiment and find the answers to some of Singapore's biggest millennial problems-rising costs of living, the terrors of technology and AI, and much more!

Throughout the whole video, unfortunately there was not 1 interviewee who fulfilled the actual point of this experiment. The first female interviewee cabs/grabs to work everyday, but she splits it with another person, therefore making her account less relavant to the experiment. She also does not grab back home, which means her actual expenditure should have been ~$17*2 for 2 trips a day, 5 days a week, amounting to around ~$750 a month. The second interviewee rides a bike, which basically is directly irrelevant to the point of this video. The third interviewee also does not directly speak to the point of this experiment. In fact, it is contradictory because it shows that you NEED a car, but if you cannot/do not wish to afford one, you can try renting. I could only take reference from the actual results of your experiment - which amounted to $469.20, meaning around $1,173 per month. As stated in the video, to own a car it costs around $1.2k/mth, therefore proving that owning a car is akin to cabbing/grabbing around, without the downsides of i.e. waiting time. Conclusion - If you cab/grab everywhere everyday, you may as well own a car.

@@wennnnn2307 Oh right, I misunderstood that. I stand corrected. Then based on an 8-year loan and $170,000 for an Altis, its around $3k/mth. Which means cabbing/grabbing everywhere everyday is almost half the cost.
@miriarch7177
@miriarch7177 10 ай бұрын
A Toyota Altis costs 170k, of which you'd pay 40% in downpayment upfront ($68,000) and the remaining 60% ($102,000) via loans. A 7-year loan with an interest of ~2.8% would amount to $1,453 / month. This is of course not inclusive of petrol, parking, road tax, insurance, and maintenance. A realistic monthly spend for a car of this price range would be ~$2k/month. However there are other cheaper car models such as a Honda Fit which would bring your overall spending down to roughly 1.5k/month. Slightly on par with grabbing around everywhere especially with more costly scenarios not shown in this video (ie. rainy weather / past midnight cabs). On top of that, you also avoid nausea inducing cab drivers, for the inconvenience of driving yourself around. haha

If you have the kind of jams in Singapore that you do in Bangkok and KL, you'd be spending as much time travelling by car as you do now on public transport. It's not necessarily either or for bus, train or cab. You could mix it up depending on timing and what you need to do.

I feel like the cost-benefit analysis changes for a young family. I have 2 kids. If each of them takes the school bus, it's $250/month x 2. I bring my grandmother who is 95 to the hospital for checkups and visits regularly (averaging 4 trips /month). A round trip costs $30 in cab fare, x 4 = $120. My wife and I each spend $200 / month on public transport. A car costs roughly 1.4k / month, but saves me $1020 / month. The difference of $380 buys me at least 30hours of transport time saved / month. What is each hour worth to you? Because if you're willing to pay $13 to get an hour of free time, a car is actually (possibly) worth it.
@lsjtony

@@wennnnn2307 the wait time for grab and taxi's have increased sometimes longer for certain times of day and night and that goes up more on rainy and hot day's. Searching for places to park adds time. But having autos listed as luxury is to inaccurate as handicapped, sick, injured, elderly that moves slow or might fall and be injured, then infants and toddlers with he prams and the bags need to care of them. Having an auto is important and essential. The hygiene is another reason as some of us know that weakened immune systems are another factor and if anyone had surgery that makes having a clean auto very important.

Ya agree. In Singapore and my point of view, if you are a Solo rider or with additional one more pillion that's the way to go. It will save more money and also travel anywhere you want in a short period of time. The benefit of a motorcycle there is no Jam but only slowness, so the time consume from point A to point B even way shorter. For a second hand motorcycle, on cost average per month with inclusive of all the hidden cost (Insurance + petrol + Installment) likely $600. However, with family a rented car or grab will be financially more accommodating and practical for average house hold.

the society at large is bearing the cost of car ownership and subsidising car owners. Public transport should really be give more priority despite what has been uttered all along. The roads surrounding MRT/LRT stations should allow only buses and bikes to enter, most residential areas should assign only one lane per direction for private cars, pedestrian should not be made for more than 10 seconds at every junction.

Reach a mall to have dinner, too crowded, no problem, change and drive off to another mall, can go to remote places anywhere anytime. The only time when taxi/grab is practical or necessary is 1) When you work in CBD area with too expensive parking, heavy traffic and need to do sales or meet clients all within CBD area. 2) When your car go for servicing/repair/respray, LOL.

You forgot to factor in the time spent queuing to enter or leave the carpark, as well as driving around looking for a parking lot. You'll be surprised how much time one can waste in this. With a cab/grabcar, you just get in/out and you're in the mall/office already. On weekends, 99% of SG malls will have long queues of cars waiting to enter and park. There goes your time saved with a car. The malls with no queues.....got nothing much in them in terms of shops and food also....lol.

@huaiwei 10 ай бұрын
With a car, you are restricted to going to places where you can actually park. This means some popular areas without sufficient parkin are already excluded during peak periods. And some people make decisions based on parking rates, which again reduces your freedom. Or you have to park at some ulu point and waste time walking all the way back. So I would counter that by saying you only really need a car if you are the wishy-washy indecisive kind who needs total freedom to cater to last minute whimps and fancies. And sometimes, even the MRT is faster than either grap or the car. For example, it is usually much faster to get from Plaza Singapura to Punggol Central via the NEL even during off peak, such that I would turn down lift offers from friends. So it also really depends on where you usually go. It takes me just 15 minutes to get to work by public transport, so I will stick to that. ;)
@sleepy_dobe
@sleepy_dobe 10 ай бұрын
I've either owned a car or a motorbike, or both at the same time, for over 20 years. And I've also relied public transport before. I love cars, I love bikes, and I love both driving as well as riding. But I will never ever buy another car in SG, unless I have a real need for one. And I don't think having kids makes the need for a car real. If one is talking about taking the kids out, infrequent trips to the hospital, grandparents etc, you don't need to have a car 24/7 for that. Even if one needs to send and pick the kids to/from childcare, using a cab twice a day, 5 days a week is still better than owning the car yourself. Those who really need a car are those who need to go to several places in a day, everyday or almost everyday of the week, the wheelchair-bound who has to go to the office or elsewhere everyday, and those who cover at least 100km daily. For everyone else, just call a cab or a private hire car, or rent a car for the day or hours you need. Just because one can afford it, doesn't mean one should have it. There are many other ways to spend your money responsibly.

It really depends on what’s important to you, isn’t it? As a female driver & owning my own car, I prioritise my time, comfort (coz I have motion sickness, or worse, headache & vomit from bad jerky driving of cab drivers) & convenience (like sleeping in a bit more) than an expensive luxury handbag. If that branded bag is more important to you, then you would buy the bag & take public transport. Nothing wrong with that if you are willing to get up earlier & spend a lot more time on commuting to work. No judgement. But if you are like me, I would rather have one expensive luxury handbag & own the car. Car sharing is a good idea / option and of course much cheaper than owning a car, if you are not OCD like me about cleanliness. We all make our choices according to what we feel is important to ourselves.

This “cheaper to cab” statement is passe and overly simplistic. Depending on how far you travel, how often you travel and the time you travel, its NOT necessarily cheaper to cab. Plus anyone who tried booking cab or PHV in ulu areas during peak period when its raining knows its impossible. A car is still more convenient as you just hope in & drive. If you compare cabbing vs buying a Ferrari or a BMW then of course its cheaper. But if you compare it to buying a modest korean or japanese brand, it might NOT be cheaper especially if you remember time is also money so good luck getting a PHV or cab during peak period rainy weather.

The assumption is that you're single. When you're shuttling the family here and there then it adds up.

I still remember back when my father felt that its inconsiderate for us to have children if we can't afford a car, as young children board/alight more slowly & thus hold up other passengers. With only 1/3 of households having cars now, if we applied my dad's logic today, our replacement TFR would skyrocket from 2.1 to 2/(1/3)=6!

I remember some wheelchair commuters being disappointed at how few some stations' entrances are wheelchair-accessible e.g. Tg Pagar & Raffles Pl MRT used to have only 1/9 of their exits wheelchair-accessible, though that has since increased slightly

Cmon, do some in depth research... there are electronic vehicles available in singapore... Hence why singapore introduced singapore green plan 2030 So the arguments of contributing carbon emission is invalid

Dear young lady, Please be mindful that on the whole S'pore being a very small nation, definitely does not contribute very much to the Carbon Footprint as compared to USA,India, Vietnam, Central and S.America.Indonesia,Thailand and other heavily populated nations. I think the Western nations never point out the fact that our world population is over 8 billion and it's very tough to reduce the carbon footprint realistically- Don't forget poor people in third world countries don't even have enough to eat, let alone thinking of the environment. Look at the 800 US military bases and their military Aircraft-carriers,warships,submarines, military planes etc..etc..etc..military exercises. Please,please do not be bullied or blinded by the rich nations trying to bully others into submission. I am not against trying to help our planet, But we have to honestly calculate the pollutions brought about by the rich First world countries!!!!!! Besides even EV vehicles need electricity-produced by Power stations...EV batteries productions use lots of energy and actually contribute to environmental poisoning/pollutions etc..etc..etc..MUST ALWAYS LOOK AT THE COMPLETE PICTURE.

Just because other countries are producing more doesn’t negate the fact that we are still contributing significantly as individuals. It is definitely not necessary to drive in SG and we can cut down on a lot of unnecessary emissions just by taking public transport.

💯 people who tout environmentalism never research objectively. Get companies and gov to stop deforestation and promote reforestation.

EV is not so environmentally friendly as what you thought. Do you know the damage they had done to the earth sourcing for lithium and cobalt for EV batteries. The so-called green technology like EV actually had done more environmental damages than petrol car.

Your thinking is way too optimistic, which doesnt work for most of the folks out there. There are more reasons why folks own a car and they dont give you a damn about putting up an argument on the 10 WHYs and waste their time.
