It is somewhat of a disadvantage for marginalized communities to have a cashless society, especially in rural areas. The local tuckshops usually charge R10 per transaction. Now imagine paying for the bank charges and the ones imposed by the tuckshop owner. However, cashless purchases benefit people who like convenience in urban areas. We could also note that when you deposit cash in your banking account, you are still charged, not forgetting the monthly charges. Also, some people feel that their money is safe in their banking accounts, and some do not feel the same way. It's actually a contradicting topic.

This is true.. But change is inevitable and all will be numbers on a screen . The transition is gradual rather then quickly especially in a developing nation. I know Fintech businesses currently working on solving issues around transactional fees and financial inclusion of small merchants and underbanked communities.. Exciting

We can't be completely cashless as a country. We can talk about how having both options available in a lot more places. I personally use digital ever since the option was available. For the convenience of not standing in queues or having to carry my wallet every time I think I might need to buy something. There is always paper trail with digital (you can track yourself) and it's much much safer. It also brought about an interesting side-effect, I spend way less money now that I avoid cash. It's almost like when I have cash my brain thinks, "there is money" vs when it's digital the brain thinks, "how much money". There is a difference there how one might behave between those 2 situations. I admit there are situations where I have to have cash but I don't prefer it.

Loved every point mentioned here, and all are valid. This goes to show that our government is not so consideration of it people. Like it was mentioned here, that we as a country still need to figure out this digital stuff and also make sure no one is left behind because this gap thing is really getting old now. But they don't seem to care as they want to things as if this gap doesn't exist. And then they option to do, what best suit the minority and then later they will complain about increased rate of crime. But honestly, I believe no one get into it by just wanting to do it. It is due to lacking that put most in that position to commit crime. Unfortunately our leaders would rather pay more money for security than to get to the root cause of the majority of it citizen and actually find ways to help it people.

What SA banks should do is invest in cash apps/ venmo type services like other African countries did. SA acting like we aren't like the rest of the continent People avoid banks because of costs. Our curent system is tring to ignore the fact that a majority of South Africans' income is informal. It helped for countries like Zimbabwe, it can work for us Low fees = More people moving to digital finance.
