in my mind when you have a relative or a person who is disabled and you live with them 24/7 you are automatically their caregiver 24 hours a day even if you do get that occasional break for an hour or two you're still caring because you never quit thinking about them but I think they have a very beautiful relationship because it is based on love and not on the fact that she thinks that taking care of her husband is a burden it is a loving relationship. it is not a burden and that's why the relationship work because she doesn't look at him as a burden when is her husband an equal partner in their relationship.

Its also a role that is the ultimate expression of love. I was my mother's care giver when she was going through to go home to be with the Lord. She would often apologize for being a "burden"...I would always respond to her with "No mom, I have the best role, I get to be with you and laugh with you and love on you all night, just like she did for me when I was a kid going through Crohn's disease and that yukky devastation. Guys y’all are awesome! My father was paralyzed from neck down when I was ten and it was the worst and the best thing that ever happened to me. I learned real quick the world didn’t revolve around me anymore and how to truly care for someone. I learned how to transfer him to a car yes a 87 grand national. I learned so much and I grew up real fast which wasn’t all that great but I survived. He passed away after 22 years. My mother never once left his side and loved him the whole time. She taught me what a real women is supposed to be. I’m 43 now and both parents have moved on to Jesus. Seeing y’all , Shane and Hannah have brightened my life and I thank y’all for that. My mother said it wasn’t caregiving it’s just good ole LOVE.

Thank y'all so much! I take care of my grandmother who is 102 years old and I have been so encouraged...sometimes I feel that I am forgotten but I am also reminded that she took care of me when my biological mom left me with her at the age of three years old. She can no longer do the things that she used to, obviously. But I am grateful that she took really good care of me and she made me feel safe to the point where I have had the best childhood! Even though my mom didn't want me...my grandmother did want me ,so I am going to care for her until the end! She was my caregiver in a sense so I decided to be hers in return...God Bless you two!

You two are doing so much to break stigmas and it’s so wonderful. I work in the aging and elder care field, and so many older adults need full-time care. I know independence is important, but I think we need to reframe how we look at it. Humans are supposed to be in communities and be around other people. Working together to assist someone is a really beautiful thing and not a burden. I know caregivers can have burnouts sometimes, but that’s why it’s amazing to have a support system around, and to reframe the idea that caregiving is nothing but a full-time job. It’s also spending time with a person. Ya’ll are the cutest.

Cole and Charisma I am disabled and I have to have help at times, I have an aide that helps me or family members it was difficult to get use to ,I was born with a disability but as I got older I was able to do less for myself, that was a hard thing to take as when I was younger I could be more independent but my body is less able to do things I used to do, as I think is the case as people age.You are right that most people will need a caregiver at some point in their lives, weather it be for a short term illness or a long term we all will probably need someone to care for us,so we should have compassion for those who need care as it could be any one of us at any time.

My brother broke his neck and was paralyzed. He recieved rehab at Shepherd in Atlanta also. They did a great job, it was a very scaring time for our family. My brother was told that he would never walk again, but would be able to operate a special chair. He never gave up, fortunately his injury and his determination allowed him to learn to walk again. I sometimes forget that he was once paralyzed, he walks well and can skip (not run) if he's in danger. I say that because someone targeted him and tried to rob him and he laughed about how he skipped away as fast as he could. Needless to say, I was hot as fish grease and it was not funny at the time. I wanted to hunt that dude down and kick his butt...I'm the baby sister. But dont mess with my brother and he's disable too😡👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽. That lead me to your moms site and then yours. I have watched your journey, which is miraculous and empowering. I cracked up at the vid when you went to the historic site where Charisma’s dad was so ADHD!! Awww great video! My husband had had cancer in his colon and had to wear a bag after surgery. It was terrible because the bag was full and no one was around. Couldn't find any nurses so I texted his sister who is a nurse and she told me to KZbin it. So we did. I learned how to change the bag from the first day and it was an adjustment especially for him. Thankfully they were able to reverse it later that year and he is healed and back to going to the restroom normally. But it made us more thankful for good health. He learned to have compassion for those who have to live with bags. God bless you both! Very refreshing!

You're right, Cole & Charisma, and thank you for bringing that up. Not much attention is given to caregivers and what they must endure during the whole process. I am the sole caregiver to a 24 year old son and it has not been easy for me at all. A tragic event impacts not only the disabled person but the family members who must step in and assume new roles. Life changes for everyone involved.

Charisma you are a blessing to Cole and his family, they all have to appreciate and love you for your unselfish giving and positive spirit. Sometimes in care giving it's easy to neglect oneself without even realizing it so please Cole continue to keep an eye on her to take care of herself. Also, Cole you are a blessing and inspiration to everyone! Both of you have positive spirits and care for others and it's beautiful! The two of you - keep up the good work, stay strong and enjoy your lives! God bless you both.

Cole and Charisma I just love you guy’s Cole I know what it’s like to be taken care of most of my life my mom was my back bone. She had to watch me go through many sicknesses and lot’s of pain not to mention cancer, rape, domestic violence but I survived and when my illness hit she lost everything just to take care of me. So when my mom became sick I was there for her until god called her home last year, I just want to say that you two are such an inspiration and you also so that love can come when you least expect it I love you guy’s

It is awesome when can give back as far as caring for our loved ones. Sometimes people just don't understand how hard it is on us emotionally receiving the care all the time. The fact is we have to make it work and it finds it's own way with lots of love and understanding. You guys are great..thank you for sharing.

I work for the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving and a great quote (right along the lines of what you were saying) from Rosalynn Carter is "There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers."

I agree disabilities are a family thing... I have epilepsy and have since I was 3 years old and I’m lucky in the fact that as I have aged and learned to manage my condition the only thing it truly effects is my ability (or lack of ability) to drive. So my family and my friends help a lot when it comes to getting me around to work and other places and things like Lyft have given me some independence. You definitely have to thank the team behind you.
