Thing is, in real life the absolute majority of studies - any kind of studies - are funded by those who want them published because they believe the outcome would be favourable to their cause / business. This is not a bad thing per se as long as the studies are accurate. No one but the primary benefactors would have the money and willingness to conduct all that research anyway. Key is honesty, though. For example, I have come across studies funded by protein powder manufacturers that showed that supplementation with protein powders didn’t do jack shit for muscle growth. And they still published those

The claim that the sugar industry blamed saturated fat is also wrong. The researchers back in the 60s were funded by the dairy industry and they expected to find that sugar was the cause of heart disease. When they actually found saturated fat was the cause, the dairy industry yanked their funding and the sugar industry picked up the bill because the research exonerated their products, at least as the primary cause of heart disease. The reason people who eat cheese have a lower risk of heart disease is because cheese functions as a marker for higher socio-economic status, which is also associated with a higher fruit and vegetable intake and better healthcare and such. (i.e. The health of 'cheese eaters' is better despite the cheese, not because of it.) Proper research would control for these variables, or even better yet, would consists of double-blind, placebo-controlled experiments. Well, this had nothing to do with whether cheese is really bad for you. A moderate amount of organic cheese is good for you. It adds to the diversification of intestinal flora along with other benefits. Most people who are lactose and/or wheat intolerant actually suffer from weakened digestion from the terrible American diet. They have leaky gut syndrome. If they detox, change their diet, and rebuild their digestive fire, then harder to digest proteins like wheat and dairy aren't a problem. Humans throughout the centuries have always eaten wheat and dairy. It just wasn't the toxic, genetically modified shit people eat today that's pushed by corporations.

So, if candy and dairy are consumed in quantity by rich Europeans, and rich Europeans enjoy relatively good health, who is to say that candy and cheese really are bad for you? Greger laughs at the idea, but it seems like an obvious obstacle to his conclusion.

@alexxander17682 жыл бұрын
Upvote this if you want to be educated. Cows milk has 10-20x more estrogenic compounds than human milk. The industry will tell you it's 'insignificant' but anyone who has cut dairy out of their diet knows the truth, it's a major effect. Now for the kicker... cheese is compounded and takes 10 lbs milk per 1 lb of cheese. So eating cheese hasessentially 100-200x more estrogenic compounds than human milk, which already has a lot of estrogen in it. After I gave up cheese and dairy, I noticed a greater drive to get things done, I was making more decisions less impulsively, and I was sleeping better overall. Another thing to understand about cheese is it is loaded with morphine (painkiller) compounds and other antibiotics if you buy it in store (even natural/organic). And it's not a small dose. And one of the worst things about taking painkillers is it turns off your bodies natural ability to regulate them... so when you want to go out and play soccer with your kid, or lift weights, or whatever... you don't have those painkillers to keep you going. It's so insane how there is a monopoly on information and it took me 20+ years to figure this out.

It's a great practice to encourage/remind people to account for the source of funding in studies, and I understand the concern with conflicts of interest when certain organizations clearly have much to gain by certain results; however, it's much better to focus on debunking their results/claims and not IMMEDIATELY ASSUMING they are lying. Research costs ALOT of money (especially in food science) and it's unreasonable to expect a random organization to care about your random research focus and throw money at your project than an organization that specifically cares about that field of study. Ex: Would you give your money to someone who contacts you and proposes to identify whether the use of a certain ply of toilet paper leads to an increased risk of hemorrhoids? ...No? Me neither, but a toilet paper manufacturer might. Again, amoral research practices do happen and skewed data can sneak its way into publishing, so it's of relevance to FACTOR IN the source of funding. However, it's of secondary importance to the legitimacy of their methodology, and the interpretation of their results; which you determine by reading the study and not JUST the headline and who paid for it.

I am someone who avoids cheese, but I'm still not sure why. I think you did a fantastic job of showing the propaganda behind these studies, but it didn't really answer the video's title: Is Cheese Really Bad For You? So there is no evidence that cheese is unhealthy, but the studies that have been done are non conclusive because of the funding from the dairy industry and the influence that has on the studies. I am a dietician myself and i find it very difficult to find a study about milk/cheese etc. that hasn't been funded by the dairy industry. I hope that an unbiased meta analysis comes out soon.

@@earthpet Firstly I've just checked the first 3 fully viewable studies that the PCRM were involved in on their website and none of them were actually funded by them but by the government/official institution. Secondly even if there is an ethical bias funding a study, it doesn't mean the study itself is wrong or flawed it just means we could question the motives of it and check it's design etc. Thirdly an ethical bias is not the same as a profit based one, if I need to explain how the difference is important then I think I'm done here.

Isn't it not even a conspiracy theory that the US government actively promotes dairy consumption because it's an easy way for them to funnel hormones into children? At the time it probably originated from honest well-intentioned efforts to supply B12 and other newly discovered undersupplied essential nutrients, but by now it's gone all over the place. My ex-girlfriend from the USA talked about this to me, and it makes a lot of sense, looking at the younger ages for puberty there. Also, in defense of the US: This is one regard where the EU has lots of backwards bullshit, too. In many regions, animal husbandry is among few agricultural industries, so governments easily get into the habit of dumping money into it when farmers suffer from insufficient demand for their excess hyper-efficient cow farming products.

This is why I advise people to take all nutritional studies with a grain of salt, always find out who is funding the studies. So many that encourage people to consume meats and other animal products like eggs and dairy are funded by people who have an obvious conflict of interests. Animal agriculture has enormous lobbying power.

The dairy checkoff program taxes dairy producers and uses the funds to increase dairy consumption. USDA runs the program. They start these programs as "voluntary" taxes that the producers choose to pay, and then years later make it mandatory for all producers, large or small. Interestingly, if kale producers wanted a checkoff program, they too could go to USDA and get it set up. Then for every 100-weight of kale they produced, they would send in a payment to USDA, who would develop and run a program to increase kale consumption in the US. They haven't done this. The reason you see milk ad campaigns is that the dairy industry funds them by taxing themselves. Hey vegetable farmers, are you listening?
