A pair of J-20s were tracked on Indian radar from nearly 100 miles away as they flew through Tibet on practice runs. The F-35 flew into Iran, and over Russian and Syrian airspace in Syria, both undetected by Iran's defense systems, or the Russians' so-called "F-35 killer" S-400 and their S-300 SAM systems. My impression is that the J-20 isn’t meant to be a Chinese version of the F-22, but rather, a large airborne missile truck tasked primarily with using stealth and long-range air-to-air missiles to attack AWACS, aerial refuelling and non-stealthy aircraft, and then operate in conjunction with H-6 bombers with both using cruise missiles to attack American military installations, bases, key infrastructure and naval vessels.

@chromazome501
@chromazome501 2 жыл бұрын
Stealth is not designed to keep you invisible at all times. It's more so designed to keep the enemy from radar lock on you and it does this by the radar cross section being extremely small. The smaller the better, but on radar it would look like something really small blip in and out of existence. Because it's impossible to completely erase your radar cross section something will always blip in and out of radar. The United States has perfected the tech with the F-22 and B-2 bomber. They are still picked up on radar, but not long enough to actually track them and get a kill. So it's a game of whack-a-mole. Besides, DARPA does not release their best tech to the public in the United States. If planes like the F-22 were produced in the 80s - 90s, then you can almost bet that whatever they have now that is hidden is super advanced. Those people get paid an astronomical amount of money every year to remain 50 years ahead of the curve.
@ApplePotato
@ApplePotato 3 жыл бұрын
I think this is a fair comparison. But stealth planes main goal is avoid ground based radars and weapon systems. Some stealth plane have large radar cross section when looking from the top. So a difference in altitude might negate some of the stealth advantages. Just to respond to some Indian comments down below, most stealth fighter are equipped with a lunberg lens. This increases the radar cross section to aid in tracking and avoid problems with civilian aircraft traffic control. Both the F35 and J20 has them. F35 flying to airshows are routinely tracked by civilian aircraft controllers with conventional radar.

J20 stealth is practically nonexistent according to the Indian Airforce so the detection argument is somewhat moot. Especially due to sensor fusion which allows the F35 to detect and engage targets with the radar turned off. The J 20 is not able to do that and would have to rely on active radar to find the F35 which would give away their position. It’s a little like using a torch in dark room to find someone but everyone can see you. Note that active radar waves can be traced back to their source.

In your defence, yeah, it isn't really that fair to compare a multi-role fighter to a air superiority fighter (simply because it isn't apples-to-apples), but even a multi-role fighter--as the name implies--can still fight in the air: it is not specialised in any specific task, and, therefore, may not always excel at it; the same idea--regarding the latter statement--could still apply to any military aircraft being given the "fighter" (or "air superiority fighter") designation. It's better to be a multi-role fighter (despite the fact that they have a specific loadout per individual sortie) than to be a "specialist"; their uses can be nearly endless and implies flexibility. However, that does not mean multi-role fighters are end all, be all.
@superfamilyallosauridae6505
@superfamilyallosauridae6505 5 жыл бұрын
Both are multi-role. J-20 will be flying around with smart bombs and anti-ship missiles in a few years. F-35's IOC was just AMRAAMs and maybe Paveways? In any case, they're both multirole and will both be used for all roles. And while we know very little of J-20, we know a LOT about F-35. You're literally less accurate than Binkov, with a 50% falsehood rate.
@mickeyg7219
@mickeyg7219 5 жыл бұрын
@@daviddebroux4708 Multi-role fighter doesn't implies sacrificing certain advantages of an air superiority fighter. The only major difference between an air superiority fighter and multi-role fighter is that a multi-fighter also have more sensors and targeting system for ground attack. So multi-role fighters are usually heavier because it carries more avionics, as F-15E and F-18E/F are heavier than F-15C and F-18C/D. Most countries do not have a dedicated air superiority fighter, so they often buy multi-role fighters such as F-16. But F-16 is also known for its dogfighting capability as it's was its original design. Multi-role fighters are the main workhorse of the air power, and stays relevant throughout the conflict where air superiority fighters are only cost-effective in the opening of the war, but once you gained air superiority, its role diminished greatly. If we pinned F-22 against the F-35, the kill ratio should be roughly equal, as the F-22's only advantage is its maneuverability, but F-35 has much more defensive suit and sensors, and it can also use helmet to target in HOB mode (F-22 pilots currently use conventional helmet).

Two concepts that were left out of this video is, which would be another advantage for F-35, are Data Link and Sensor fusion. Really only one aircraft, being it F-35 or supporting AWACS would need to have its Radar on. All other 35's would share the data in real time and could acquire their targets totally silent. If performed perfectly, the first sign of trouble for the J-20 would be the AMRAAMS radar locking them up.

So, in beast mode f35 can carry 14 or so aim120d missiles and can fire a salvo of about 4-6 at a time? Now, with the low payload of f22 raptors and current uplink, the f-35 (from safe distance since it cannot be stealthy with all those missiles) fires a salvo of 6 missiles and have 6 f-22 (already used up weapons yet still undetected by enemy, and also still tracking multiple targets) take over those missiles, each one engaged with its own target. F-35 now stealthy with no more missiles can RTB and also have x2 aim9x sidewinder for self defense in internal weapons bay. F35 platform was worth it!

This video made me give up on your channel. Firstly the F35 is designed to be totally integrated with every unit on the field of battle with instant information sharing creating a totally new class of air warfare. Secondly the J20 is an old experimental MIG 1.44 that was first designed in the '80s. The Russians gave up on it as it was a failure. The Chinese made some cosmetic changes to the nose and air intakes and called it a 5th generation fighter when it hardly deserves to be called 4th generation. The Chinese still have not been able to develop an engine for it and as you stated, are using old MIG engines, leaving them severely under powered and hard to maintain. The operational statistics of the J20 that you stated are a Chinese fantasy that they hope to one day achieve. The few that are flying are used as propaganda and are far from battle ready, while the F35 is currently in active service with participating air forces around the world. As things realistically stand a F16 would have no problem dealing with the J20 providing the J20 doesn't crash before it reaches the battle field.

I would suspect that the J-20's higher super sonic acceleration and air speed design elements in its fuselage are because it uses afterburner(s) for quick and brief burst of speed around Mach 1.5 to 1.8. This is older tech than what the F-22 and the F-35 use for their super sonic modes. It is also at a severe disadvantage if you have to withdraw or intercept.

The nature of modern warfare is changing. The way planes are designed now, and the level of sophistication of modern radar systems, essentially makes the way fighter jets operate now almost obsolete. Fighter jets can now see other fighter jets hundreds of kilometers away on radar, and can lock onto targets well out of visual range. Pilots now don't even have to be in the direction of enemy planes in order to shoot them down. Missiles can lock onto targets via helmet-mounted displays, so all the pilot has to do is look in the direction of an enemy fighter. Dogfighting is very, very difficult to do these days because of this, so maneuverability and top speeds don't mean much. What matters more is being able to stay undetected for as long as possible, and being able to see the enemy first, before they see you. This is where the F-35 excels. In addition, jet fighters need to be able to do more than just air-to-air missions. They have to be able to provide support to ground troops, do tactical bombing missions, and perform reconnaissance. The F-35 was built for a new era of warfare. It's almost like comparing a Ford Model T to a Lamborghini when you compare a fifth-generation fighter to a Cold-War era fighter design, like most 4th gen fighters are.

They stole the F-35 designs and built it into the J-20 and FC-31 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenyang_FC-31)So yes, apparently, they couldn't figure it out. Knowing math and physics is one thing, but knowing how to apply them is something else entirely. The Iranians and every nuclear scientist in the world knows how a nuclear bomb works, but knowing how to build one is different. The "technical specs" you point out are suspect, as they aren't independently verified. And I'm sorry, but I don't take anything the Chinese say at face value. Maybe you do, but that's your problem. The F-35 has been purchased by several nations, and if they couldn't be verified, we would have known by now. The F-35 has been sold since 2016. And even if the numbers you flout are true, the jet isn't believed to even have AESA radars. And not only that, the J-20 was observed on Indian radars several hundred miles away as they skirted their borders, and were spotted quite easily. So much for stealth.

Your claims are either made up or outdated. Your simulated fight against SU-27 is strange as Canada obviously doesn't have SU-27s and I call BS unless you come up with facts. The SU-27 has no chance whatsoever against the F-35, the F-35 has stealth, better sensors, excellent situational awareness and better missiles. Exercises have shown (Fact) that the F-35 can't be detected by radar unless it's very close and Russian radars are generally worse than American ones. The maneuverability of the SU-27 is good for airshows but in reality it will be destroyed before it can use it, even if the F-35 can be outfitted with the AIM-9X missile which can fire at 90 degree angles so the F-35 doesn't need the enemy to be in front of it. Just a couple days ago Lockheed Martin reported that they are working on a new air to air missile called the AIM-260 it will have higher speed, higher range and of course better sensors and technology than current missiles. When you look at the aerodynamics of the J-20, it becomes obvious to anyone who knows anything about fluid dynamics that the J-20 is not maneuverable at all. It's flight surfaces and size screams bomber interceptor and nothing else. It was designed to climb high and intercept incoming bombers, but could never tangle with real fighters. It probably couldn't even beat a 3rd gen fighter. As far as stealth goes, it has none. Recently the Indian airforce using Russian Su-30s with older radars, picked up a number of J-20s flying inside the Chinese border. So any claim of stealth is propaganda at best. the bigger missiles give evidence of its bomber interceptor role.

【Recently the Indian airforce using Russian Su-30s with older radars, picked up a number of J-20s flying inside the Chinese border】is due to the Luneburg Lens J-20 used in non-combat transitions with other China non-stealth fighters just as the Luneburg Lens F-35 sometimes used. When stealth aircraft are flying in non-combat transitions, a Luneburg Lens is also generally temporarily installed to facilitate detection by the civil aviation control radar. I am not surprised that ordinary people know nothing about this, but I am deeply surprised that Indian Air Force didn't know this and made a such stupid judgement that they can see J-20 through SU-30MKI radar that will lead to fatal battlefield mistakes.

The 100 % stealth is not possible, there are reductions of RCS or radar signature. The Rayleigh Effect, and others, explains about the transformations, like Lorentz, Riemann, and the cuantics. The question is to find the way of amplification of the weak radiaton of an F-35, and logarythms for the velocity of reaction. Obvious the sun irradiates the plane, the sun has visble light, IR, UV, and a minimum of X Rays, the radar uses microwaves, the BVR ones uses Ionosphere like mirror, But the resonance, termical noise, based in Max Planck is not posible hide them. But the sky is big and sensor are not so sensitive. Well is hard science, the point if your plain is less vissible to the radar, is a good advantage, make the active missiles perhaps discard your aircraft, the SARH missiles depends of the aircraft radar but the plane get exposed to other enemies, in the sky all is so fast, is better in all be less detectable than other. More in a war where is a place infested of noise, electric al waves, is a dense place.

F-22s fleet of 187 is very large by current 5th gen standards and won't be outnumbered for years by anything but the f-35. Also f-22s can be deployed around the pacific to cover f-35s and everything else so acting like they aren't a factor is strange. Aim-120D may have less range but it's a more mature design and has much more experience and testing than pl-15. Also if it's smaller and slower it may be less detectable. Aim-120 also benefits from being fed information from the best sensors and network of any other fighter which one would think would raise it's effectiveness. There is not much known about pl-15 but I am taking claims at face value. Aim-9x benefits from being guided by datalink with block 2. F-35's DAS capability is known to make it difficult to get anywhere near f-35 without being detected and that info is fed into either aim9x or amraam. j-20 isn't known to have much in the way of IR suppression and should show up nicely and with it's current engines will heighten it's IR signature if it speeds up. The same is true for any fighter but it's worse for non super cruising engines. Also f-35's helmet give additional situational awareness than to simply tell the the missile what direction to go. J-20 tries to compensate for all that by being able to hang the non datalink guided missiles out so it's sensor can get the look it needs but that has a signature and drag penalty as well as pl-10 still can't attack targets behind j-20 like aim9 can. Since f-35 has superior stealth and sensors and most likely networking as well and a gun the odds of an f-35 getting behind j-20 seem high. Not much is known about j-20s sensors but they are no slouch I would assume and would at least match 4th or maybe 4.5 gen fighters, same goes for software and networking as china does not have a history of fielding systems like that but they are developing quickly. Also j-20 likely doesn't have the "spike management" software that has taken a long time to develop for f-22/35. So even with the inferior stealth it has it probably isn't as optimized as it could be to know when and where it can be detected. This amount of information gives f-22/35 an advantage but how much can't be known. Also US fighters probably have at least some advantage in both LPI methods to stay stealthy as well as electronic warfare. These things are the more sophisticated parts of a stealth plane, more difficult to engineer than stealthy looking shaping or some sort of radar absorbing coating. Little is known about either but j-20 is the newcomer. At close range f-35 is much more likely to detect first and set the engagement how they want. Also f-35 is not is sluggish as some have suggested and little has been seen with j-20's maneuverability, also j-20 doesn't seem to have a gun. As it stands now it seems j-20 closes the gap in capabilities but a gap still remains and is outclassed by f-35. It's hard to make verdicts with limited information.

The F-35 is a mature stealth design with a lineage over 50+ years old, serving in an Air Force with 30+ years of experience in stealth operations. The USAF has thousands and thousands of hours of actual combat experience. China can't produce a native turbofan engine and are forced to rely on under-powered Russian jet engines; which have terrible reliability compared to western designs, which easier to maintain and have far longer service lives. The F-35 with its next block upgrade will carry 6 AMRAAM missiles internally. When the Small Advanced Capabilities Missile (SACM) is available that number will increase to potentially 12 medium range anti-air missiles carried internally.

China has indeed lagged behind the US in terms of electronics and software up until about the end of the 2000s. For the past 10 years, China has rapidly closed the gaps with both microprocessors and the software needed to manage and integrate complex systems, courtesy of a combination formalized technology transfer from Western civilian companies, research and cooperation between Chinese and Western Universities, espionage and increasingly internal pure R&D.
