Another clarification about Christmas in Colombia, to add to the clarifications made by other people about everything starting on December 7th with noche de velitas and the celebration of novenas from December 16th to December 24th, is that, traditionally, the gifts are brought by baby Jesus ( el Niño Dios), contrary to what is said in the video by the Colombian girl. What happens is that in some recent years commerce has adopted the tradition of the United States that makes Santa Clause (Papá Noel) the one who brings the gifts. Another thing that has been adopted from the US tradition is the Christmas Tree. In Colombia the tradition did not have Christmas Tree but only Nativity Set (Pesebre).

En Colombia quien pone los regalos es el Niño Dios, y la fiesta que inicia la temporada de Navidad oficislmemte es el Dia de las Velitas (noche del 7 al 8 de diciembre, fiests de la Inmaculada Concepcion). Del 16 al 24 de diciembre se reza la Novena en preoaracion al Nacimiento de Jesús. En algunas partes de Colombia, como en Baranoa, Atlantico, en la costa caribe cerca a Barranquilla, se hacen puestas en escena por razon de la fiesta de los Reyes Magos. Con esto culmina la fiesta de Navidad en Colombia.

In Colombia we celebrate Xmas from the 7th December with the lighting of candles (immaculate conception) in all cities and towns. From the 16th December we start the Novenas which are daily gatherings in neighbourhoods and households to sing, eating traditional Xmas food and reciting the journey that Mary and Joseph made culminating the 24th Dec with the born of Jesus. That day, families gather to celebrate and eat Xmas foods and exchanged/give gifts. In most cases it all ends in dancing and big parties. In Cali, from the 25th to the 30th December people carry on celebrating all week in La Feria de Cali, a type of Carnival and festivities all around the city with lots of dancing and live music and food festivals. On the 31st December families gather again to celebrate the new year's eve and some people carry on celebrating until early on the first day of the new year. Some people erect effigies of a character or a person which are filled with fireworks and they burn them signifying the burning of all bad things that happened to them the previous year and others go around the block at midnight with a suitcase and their pockets filled with foreign money in an attempt to travel more the following year. The first weeks in January people go on holidays to coastal towns/cities or to regions with opposite weather (of what you have throughout the year) to rest and travel. People tend to dismantle all Xmas decorations on the 5th or 6th of January marking the end of the Xmas season.

Me gusta el acento de España cada vez más. La neta me encantan un buen de acentos españoles pero de vez en cuando me fijo en otro acento. Al principio escuchaba más el acento mexicano , o sea los acentos. Luego los colombianos y después el rioplatense. Pero hoy en día y no sé por qué quiero escuchar el de España. Aqui en Estados Unidos solemos celebrar La Navidad muy parecido al estilo Argentino. Nochebuena es lo mas importante, nos quedamos hasta las 3am/4am de la madrugada despierto. Y despues manana dormimos hasta las 12pm, comemos los sobres, y despues compramos cosas enlinea y salimos de compras o dormir.

En Argentina se celebra la noche buena, se va bien vestido (nada de pijamas como en USA o UK) y dura toda la noche, hasta las 7 am, quizás más los que son muy fiesteros. El 25, como decís se comen las sobras del día siguiente y se levantan tarde. Pero también está la otra costumbre igual de popular, que es que el 25 muchos se levantan tipo 11 am para irse a almorzar y pasar el día en familia en el río/playa/campo/etc.

Very Interesting that in Spanish speaking countries it is 24 that is most important unlike in many other countries, with us in Croatia it is 25 that is most imporant but on 24 of December there are still some customs for example on that day people eat Codfish or as we call it Bakalar and make Fritule for desert, fritule are kind of pastries that are made by frying in hot oil and are best eaten hot, midnight is time when People usualy go to Church on 24/25 and tomorrow usually there is lunch and family comes together. Also day after christmas is important.

It surprised me too. In Sweden and the other Nordic countries (and some other European countries) we celebrate on the 24 as well. For us it goes way back to when a day started and ended by sunrise/sunset and not by midnight. I don't go to church so 25 is usually second christmas if you have extended family to visit or you just spend it on the couch digesting all the food from yesterday. Mostly just a day of relaxing.

Here in Denmark both the 25th and the 26th are holidays and, depending on family relations, it is common to use one or both to visit extended family. I suspect that the same applies in Sweden? Its not mentioned in the video, but eating Codfish (Bacalao) on Christmas Eve is actually a very common practice historically in Spain, Mexico, and Latin America too. Its still eaten, but depends on local family tradition. Varies from family to family. Its just that with such a diversity of food, locally some foods are preferred over others with time. Fritters are also popular in different forms. In Spain and Mexico churros fried in oil and coated with sugar and cinammon are popular year round. However in Mexico specifically, there's a Christmas tradition to roll out dough like a flour tortilla, and cook in oil, and coat with sugar/cinnamon or a liquid honeylike brown sugar. These are called buñuelos. They are accompanied by a hot fresh fruit punch or hot chocolate like beverage.

@@danmur2797 Very interesting :) I know that "Bakalar" came to east Adriatic via Venice from Norway and it was a kind of status simbol when it came here but after years it became a custom to eat it before Christmas , day before Christmas. Actually there are so many recepies with "Bakalar" that it is hard to count them all, there is even Pizza with Codfish that people eat during this time of the year.

22:19 en Colombia ( no sé si en otros paises también ) hay dos calendarios estudiantiles, las vacaciones que menciona la chica son los de el calendario A (que se usa por lo que tengo entendido en la mayoría del país), el otro calendario es el calendario B, en este los estudiantes comúnmente salen a vacaciones entre el 12-16 de Diciembre y entran entre la segunda o tercera semana de Enero..... El calendario B se usa más que todo en los departamentos de Valle del Cauca, Nariño y Cauca, aunque no significa que no hallan colegios en estos departamentos con calendario A

En México se celebran tanto el 24 y 25 de diciembre como el 6 de enero. El 25 de diciembre los regalos los “trae” Santa Claus (pronunciado “Santaclós”.), aunque la noche del 24 las familias se dan regalos entre sí. El 6 de enero, los regalos son traídos por “Los reyes magos”, o tal vez por “el niño Jesús” en la tradición de ciertas regiones o familias.

Soy de Los Estados Unidos, y acuerdo con el punto en la video que es muy irritante cuando gente intenta celebrar el Navidad demisiado temprano! Básicamente, después de el Halloween en el treinta y uno de octubre, todo el mundo quiere tener música navidades y decoraciones navidades. No en todos lados es tranqui el día de reyes en olavarria el 5 de enero a la nochecita por lo general es mas bien en sierras bayas que esta en el partido de olavarria bajan los Reyes magos del cerro y es una tradición ir a ver la bajada por lo general hacen un recorrido como 1 mes antes se empieza a preparar algunas personas le entregan el regalo para que se lo entreguen ellos a los niños otros les dicen que cuando vuelvan van a estar los regalos pero quieren que vean la bajada. Esta tradición era desde antes que yo era chica y tengo 46

Seguramente habrá quien coma pavo en España en Nochebuena-Navidad pero la verdad que yo on he conocido a nadie que tomara pavo en esas fechas (en mi experiencia no es común comer pavo asado en general, quizá últimamente más). Si conozco gente que toma capón o pularda y algunas comidas comunes son: embutidos, marisco, cordero, cochinillo, besugo al horno (u otros pescados similares)... y luego turrones y mazapanes.

Soy del norte de Mexico y antes de navidad son las posadas (fiestas) y comida, en navidad el 24 es la comida y fiesta en la noche y abrir regalos el 25, el 31 es fiesta grande con todos los rituales para mejorar el año, el 6 de enero partir la rosca de reyes y termina en febrero con los tamales.

En Colombia nadie le pide a papá Noel, aquí es el Niño Dios, en un 99.99% de los casos, y tampoco se come Paco por regla, ni ensalada de manzana. Hay muchísimos más platos, pero pavo no es habitual.

El pavo nunca fue un animal de sudamérica. Hoy en día, con la globalización, se pueden conseguir alimentos importados de cualquier parte del mundo, pero es lógico que en Colombia nunca hubiese pavo. Por ejemplo, en la Ciudad de México se acostumbra comer romeritos y bacalao. También en el minuto 10:11 dijo ¡tremendo error! ¡Los Reyes Magos llegan en la madrugada del 6 de enero, no en la noche! Los niños disfrutan sus regalos el día 6, no el 7. En el minuto 12:15 dijo que la rosca de reyes (el pan) se come el día 5, cosa que es incorrecto. Se acostumbra reunirse la noche del 6 de enero en familia y amigos para “partir la rosca”.

Depende de la familia. Muchos solo les dan a los niños, lo ponen abajo del árbol o simplemente los reparten. En muchas otras familias también reciben los adultos. Lo que se suele hacer es el juego del "amigo invisible" (hay trabajos en los que también lo juegan, generalmente en empleos de oficina), a cada uno le toca una persona y se pone el regalo en el árbol con el nombre, sin que se sepa de quién viene. Otros simplemente se compran y regalan todos entre todos y listo

In Spain, adults also receive gifts. Both at Christmas and on the day of Reyes Magos (January 6). Although in many Spanish homes, only a minor gift is given for Christmas, while the best gifts, the ones that will make the people most excited, are given on Reyes Magos. The way gifts are exchanged varies depending on whether there are children in the home or not. According to tradition, the Three Wise Men or Three Wizard Kings (los Reyes Magos) bring gifts for all good people, not only children although especially children, so when children wake up on the morning of January 6th they expect to see gifts for the whole family, not just for them. In fact, in some homes, children are told that in their letter to the Three Wise Men they shouldn't only ask for gifts for themselves, but also for the rest of their family. This teaches children that they should also think about others. When I was a child I was very happy every time my brother, my sisters or my parents opened a gift and I saw that it was one of the ones that I had asked the Reyes Magos to bring them. That being said, two options: 1. If there are children in the house, the adults keep the gifts hidden (both those that they are going to give to each other and those that they have bought for the children), and on the night of January 5, while the children are sleeping, they place the gifts in the living room of the home. Previously, before going to sleep, the children have left something to eat and drink for the Three Wise Men, and in some homes they also leave a bowl with water or even straw for their three camels. In the dedications of the different gifts, both gifts for children and gifts for adults, dedications are usually written pretending they were written by the Three Wise Men, often trying to put a handwriting different from the usual one if the children already know your handwriting. The dedications can put things such as: "From Melchor, with love, to (insert child's name here). This year you have been very good, I hope you enjoy your gifts", or "From Baltasar, with love, to (insert child's name here) I know you will like this toy/book. Remember to continue being good and studying hard. A hug", or "From Gaspar, with much affection, to (insert the name of the father, or the mother, or the grandmother, or grandfather, or older brother or sister)". Normally there will be more than three gifts, so each Wizard King will leave more than one gift. The examples I gave before are just examples, in reality you can make each one of the Three Wise Men gives one or more gifts to whoever you want. For example, when I was a child, the Wizard King who brought me and my father the most gifts was Melchor, the second one who brought me the most gifts was Baltasar, Gaspar was the one who brought me the fewest gifts. Obviously, my favorites were Melchor and Baltasar. However, the one who brought the most gifts to my brother and one of my sisters was Baltasar, and the one who brought the most gifts to my mother and my other sister was Gaspar. Each family organizes this as they wish or they can even do it completely randomly (which I think is usually the case in most families). If there are more adults in the house besides the parents (grandparents, uncles, etc.), then for the adults to know who each gift really comes from, you can simply look around and the person gives you an affirmative gesture without the children noticing it, or you can even put hints in the dedication of the gift, for example: "From Baltasar to Lucía, with much love. Gonzalo wrote me a letter telling me that you woul love this present, so I hope you enjoy it". 2. If there are no children in the house, then you simply hide the gifts so that no one finds them and on the morning of January 6 you exchange gifts. Throughout the day of Reyes Magos, it's tradition for families to get together (parents, children, grandparents, uncles, cousins...) to eat the roscón de Reyes Magos, a traditional sweet of that day. The uncles and other relatives take the opportunity to bring the gifts to their other relatives, the children are given the gifts and they are told things like: "The Three Wise Men left these gifts in my house for you." If the roscón is eaten at the grandparents' house, the grandchildren look for the gifts that the Three Wise Men left for them at their grandparents' house. Hidden inside the roscón is a small figurine, often made of porcelain, and a bean. Whoever gets the bean on their piece of roscón must pay for the roscón. Whoever gets the porcelain figurine can keep it and according to tradicional beliefs will have good luck during the year. Christmas is simpler. Since there is only one Papá Noel (Santa Claus), the children already know that all the gifts come from him, so you simply leave the gifts under the tree on the night of December 24 with a label with the name of the person for whom each present is. Then, on the morning of the 25th, the presents are opened. And if there are no children in the house, then the procedure is the same as for the day of Reyes Magos in the cases when there aren't children involved, but instead of exchanging gifts on the morning of January 6, they are exchanged on the morning of December 25.

But, just to give you an idea of just how slow they are really talking, at 1.75x speed is how they would sound like speaking normally. Heck, depending on the region, they could sound like 2x speed

Exactly, the words are not pronounced in the way that you have learned them & the speed doesn’t help, particularly in some countries like Spain. We have to hear the sentences and words thousands of times to be able to recognise them when they’re not pronounced properly, as a native speaker would naturally be able to through exposure.
