Today's video is a discussion all about clickbait. I will be sending out a limited edition signed poster to 3 people who comment their opinions on clickbait down here in the comments. I will also be responding to as many people as possible. I have posted hundreds of videos to this channel, and always tried my hardest not to clickbait - but recently, the "clickbait" comments keep coming regardless of how accurate the content is to the title. Been waiting a while to open this discussion, and keep to hear your thoughts. PS - this video is 100% clickbait. Normal service will resume next upload. Much love.

JaackMaate for me clickbate is weird, I understand why it’s done gaining viewers, making money etc. Along with this it doesn’t change the content, therefore in some ways what the issue right? But then again to me it seems to bring down the professionalism of the video, especially when it is along the lines of ‘omg I got ___?’ As a title. This then seems off, in comparison to tv for example, and subconsciously makes the content worse for me. As a viewer this is also frustrating, not fully knowing what you’re going to watch. A good example of this for me is Phillip defranco, who I love, but I can never go back and find specific old videos with some of his titles. I just want simple titles, that explain the video e.g. ‘playing gta’ ‘the news today : election results’ ‘thoughts on clickbait’ etc. I dunno, sorry to ramble but it does annoy me

I think it is right because it's a way of self advertising, it's your job and I don't mind if it's slightly exaggerated but where the line stops is if the title is nothing to do with the video or completely exaggerated

Clickbait is what makes all channels now a days it’s just stupid like it’s lost it’s meaning. Ppl are using the word so much that they no longer know what it means. It’s not bad because KZbin is dying anyways so ppl need to do it however it is annoying if the contents not good after being clicked on

A clickbaiter is someone who cares more about the click, than the content. If you're providing an interesting title to lure people in to watch your stuff, that's okay, as long as the title is relevant. If you're willing to put absolutely anything in the title because you want to be a big name and claim that monetisation, then you can fucking do one.

Click bait might get you more views and audience, but I feel that it's temporary. To keep that type of audience you'll be sucked in the cycle of click bait, then sucked into trends etc (essentially things that get you views), it's inevitable you'll loose integrity. You may be popular but then you could become unpopular so quickly. There's so many examples of KZbinrs like this in different stages of that cycle. Honestly, i feel that you should title your video in a way that sums up your creative content, and people that actually appreciate it will want to watch it and become an authentic viewer. Create an authentic fan base, you will last longer. As a Long term source of income I think that's the best thing to do.

My main issue with clickbait is that it feels like I've been duped out of something. Like I've seen the video title, and decided to click it - it's almost like the KZbinr hasn't held up their end of the bargain when they clickbait. Or when I click on a video with an interesting title, only to find it's the last question in a Q+A where the answer lasts 10 seconds. The title should have been that it's a Q+A, not one specific question that's hardly answered. It infuriates me to no end, because if your content is good, people will watch regardless (which is what I do with your videos Jack).

I cannot agree with you more in the QA issue, I absolutely hate it when they put the one question in the title and then dance around it and never even answer it in the end.

Around the part where you said that you hope we click just because it's you (regardless of the title) is exactly how I feel. I genuinely enjoy your content, so it doesn't matter what you name the video or what you put in the thumbnail, I will click on the video regardless of what I see. I get excited when I see a new upload from you. When I saw your "My Girlfriend Cheated On Me" video, I was like "OKAAAAY, let's see this." and I enjoyed the story (other than being revolted by her actions in front of you). Anyway, I went into the video with an open mind. People become disappointed because they created a story in their head that didn't come true after finishing the video. I feel pretty strongly about it being the fault of the person who got tricked into clicking. Lol, I can tell when I'll be pissed off by the content of a video because of either: 1. Disliking that person from the start and knowing the kind of content they post. 2. Seeing how obnoxious the title and thumbnail are along with the annoying shocked face that's in every clickbait thumbnail ever. *** *This is for the salty viewers* It's called clickbait for a reason, you can't get mad about falling for the bait. You were never obligated to click the video. You made a conscious decision to click and it's no one's fault but your own that you were disappointed. And lol if you're disappointed, so fucking what? It's just a video, it's not that serious. *** I feel like copying and pasting another comment I wrote about clickbait like 2 weeks ago, lol I'll post that comment later. The only time I won't tolerate clickbait is in the news. The news should always be objective and serious. I expect (hope) not be lied to in those situations.

Personally, clickbait titles most often have the opposite effect: When I browse through KZbin and I detect a clickbait, I already assume that the title promises more than the video could deliver, so I avoid to click. Just in certain cases, when I am not aware or I am strongly interested in filling my knowledge gap, then I might click, but with a slightly bad feeling because I just supported clickbait.

I haven't been subscribed for long, probably around like 3 months or so, but everytime I see one of your videos in my sub box it just makes my day because you are funny and don't care if you get negative responses to any topic you talk about and you are one of if not the only channel that still makes mature content after the adpocalipse. I can relate to you on so many levels and just love every video you upload. on the topic of clickbait I think that it has been blown way out of proportion by the bigger you tubers who are mostly just cunts and suck ups. it has ruined most of the KZbin community and has caused viewers every where to be over dramatic and bias towards thumbnails that are just trying to entice views so that you can make a living doing what you love, when a lot of the time your videos are not clickbait at all they are completely true to the topics you are talking about but once again you are just trying to get views so that you can carry on living. I completely agree with you jack and don't change for anyone or anything. keep doing what you are doing because your videos are great.

I don’t mind click bait. It’s what makes money. If you end up clicking as a result and you don’t get the content you wanted or would have liked, you can always do this crazy thing called exiting the page. 😱 It’s basically the same concept when you see a trailer for a movie; they show you what will bring you in (potentially) and there’s no guarantee that you will like what you see once you commit to the content as a whole. The only difference is that you pay to watch the movie, you don’t pay to click (usually) and view the creator’s content. So I don’t see what the issue is.

You really just opened my mind about this topic. I think clickbait it's an awful thing, and I mean the shameless clickbait, when people will put titles and tumbnails that have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to deal with the video, but exagerating the titles and tumbnails just a little bit it's not a bad thing, it has been done since the begining of times (just in diferrent forms) in newspapers and tv shows, it's just a way of "community management", trying to call peoples/viewers attention, what really bothers me is when people like the Paul brothers come along and make things like I JUST MURERED MY PARENTS, LIVE FOOTAGE and then when you click on the video it's just them playing a videogame with their parents and winning, it's just straight up lying, it's not like the video you made on your ex girlfriend, you were actually talking about that story, everyone exagerates a little bit to call people's attention, it's lies what make me so incredibly angry about youtube these days, like if you've got good content there's not need for you to be lying to people, for fucks sake. Just make interesting topics and have a "catchy" personality that people will like and you will get a loyal following instead of 1M views of people that will never watch your content again because you're a fucking liar.

jack love your vids mate, best youtuber on the platform tbh. you used the title because you knew you would equal more views. rice also done the same thing. you used a title that makes sense as click bait and as a true comment about your past life. but rice also done the same thing because she is his "girlfriend" but not his lover, you made the point if your girlfriend did atm did cheat on you it would be "drama" in a way. if sommer was ricedicks lover then that would also be "drama" in a way. also every company uses clickbait. e.g. mcdonalds use amazing pictures for their products but when you get the product its nothing like the picture, yet we still go and buy their food. keep up the work man.

Everything technically is clickbait I'd say (minus videos titled, my own video.mp4) but many viewers have given the word 'clickbait' a new meaning. Now it's seen as misleading and a lie. I always say that all titles should be clickbait (in reference to growing a channel) just not straight up lying. I relate 100% to using a 'clickbait' title such as your "My girlfriend cheated on me." because myself and other KZbinrs have posted videos that aren't *strictly* clickbait but we title it in that way with the knowledge that our viewers will assume it's something else. In my opinion that's totally fine, also why I enjoy your 'clickbait' as I enjoy the content. The only 'clickbait' that I think is a problem are the straight up lies (I mean... Does this video count as that? Kind of but... Mehhh I expected it ;) ) Q&A's are for sure the easiest way to clickbait... Just find any ONE question that someone asked that could be made into a title, not technically clickbait but... I suppose a bit underwhelming? But yeah I guess that is just viewers assuming something from a title as you mentioned. To be honest, it is what it is, people have kind of ruined the meaning of the word/given it a new meaning. I don't think enticing someone with an intriguing title is wrong, but misleading titles and it can't be forgotten THUMBNAILS (the main reason viewers assume things about videos) are annoying... It works because let's be honest, we all love clicking on a clickbait video because otherwise you'll be asking "Hmmm, I know it's clickbait but how have they done it, what is the video about?" It's tough... Very open ended here, I'd also like to hear people's opinion, as a creator it is VERY difficult seeing your friends grow on clickbait and you therefore wanting that as well... Yeah, rant over I guess xD

You put these big names and pictures in your titles to get people to click on them because you want people to watch it. In my opinion there’s no difference between what you uploaded and what Ricegum did. Both were clever titles but not particularly click bait, yours was the truth, but just made viewers assume otherwise. Ricegum’s title had a space in between “girl” and “friend”, so maybe leading the viewer to misread and interpret it to believe he meant girlfriend, but ultimately it was a truthful title like yours, point made.

Hey Jaack, very entertaining video as usual! On the topic of clickbait. 1. I rarely watch new people, so wether the channels I regularly watch clickbait or not, I will click regardless. With channels that I don't know, the chance of me clicking on their video because of an inviting thumbnail + title is just very small. Theres only so many videos I can/want to watch per day, in which case I usually just stick with what I know. 2. Now for my own channel, since I am trying to grow this a bit further then 14 subscribers! I think clickbaiting is a must in order to expand my potential audience. I will never stray too far from the true content of the video, but I would title it at least in a way that I think would attract the most viewers. So in a nutshell, if other people do it, I dont care. But I do it in hopes of tricking people into finding me, potentially liking what I do, and sticking around.

As I have no life outside of work and my relationship I have a squillionty channels I subscribe to. Then when I actually have a social life for a day or two I end up with a back log of videos to watch. This is when video titles and thumbnails grab my attention. I tend to prioritise the videos that look the most “entertaining”. Mind you this also comes into play when I have zero social life or I’m sick off of work and completely catch up so I start looking for new “creators” and fall into a hole of sifting through absolute shite (because the title includes the name of someone I already subscribe too)hoping to come across someone worth bingeing on. Which is how I actually found your channel last night hahaha I’m actually half way through watching the majority of your content. When this video buzz buzzed on my phone this morning I watched it straight away because of the title. Click bait works on me but as long as your not trying to sell me something and I get a giggle out of it I really couldn’t give two shits (I could have just typed that last sentence 😓)

First of all rice gum is a lesbian, however, what he did I think was no different to your clickbaitish video on your ex girlfriend. Clickbait now is something that has become the norm and has to be done, simply because everybody else does it, and if you didn’t do it then you probably wouldn’t keep the view counts as high as the rest so it needs to be done. I also think there are 2 different types of clickbait, there’s the one that you did, and then some videos, for example some that the sidemen do, that have a title saying one thing and the video doesn’t have any relevance whatsoever which I think is cheap clickbait and just annoying

Though in your instance you could have put "The story of when my girlfriend cheated on me" which would imply it was a while ago and less "clickbatyy".

Tbh in my opinion i dont think what ricegum did was that bad and i think his clickbait and yours is around the same it isnt too far but rather funny, neither of you lied and most of your video is based around the title. However clickbait which i cant stand is 1. When it only lasts a few seconds of a video, something you will often find with vlogs which in some cases is understandsble but for the most part it is just a giant piss take, i dont have 20 minutes of my life to wait to watch you apply one layer of liptick in the car and accidentally smudge is as you claim to have a “car disaster (bad news...) 2. Clickbait where you completely lie, fair enough if you want to make the title more interesting but if you are just saying utter bs then you can honestly piss off 3. This is just about clickbait in general but you are LIEING and MANIPULATING the ppl who got you to where you are in the first place and i honestly feel ppl are in no position to do so as without having the support they would still be living in the parents basements fgs. Its not fair on the fans who will support and watch you for whatever you will show amd if all you will give them is a 20 minute piece of shit where all you do is talk about how unfair your life is bc you dont have the new iphone X whilst naming the video “worst day of my life” then you dont deserve any of it. I could go on but i dont wnat to bore anyone anymore so if you made it this far then here have some merch- 👕 (btw this took me a long time to design so no hate)

Honestly, browsing KZbin for the past few years has kind of felt like being a dog. You're offered various treats from different, hollering "masters" (ALL CAPS TITLES!) in exchange for tricks (or... clicks). But by the time you finally cave and approach anyone, you end up being offered one measly piece of kibble. You're left disappointed, unsatisfied, and unappreciated as a loyal companion. KZbin has been facing a major quality crisis for years. This is no secret. But unfortunately... this is just how the algorithm works now. Just earlier today, I read a post on Tay Zonday's Facebook page where he said, "[KZbin] is obsessed with identifying LONG content that you will watch regularly and stay on the platform to see more of. Is it brutal for them to completely shun content which doesn't cause the user behavior they want? Sure. But if I prioritized making money over operating a charity for the good in humanity, I'd make the same brutal choices." I think he's got a point, here. KZbin is a business, and short, sweet chainmail videos aren't what's trending anymore. You know part of the reason Vine might've died? People turned their material into 20-minute KZbin compilations that earned way more views, along with way more consumed content than those viewers would normally get in one sitting on Vine. In the end, a clickbait title will reap those view counts, and should be able to keep viewers on a video until they see the "outcome"... or lack thereof. So in the end, having a showy title is fine. Mostly because it has to be. But as a viewer, I'd rather the creator uphold their end of the bargain and deliver on whatever they're offering. For instance, I've started watching ElleoftheMills this past week. Part of the appeal of her videos (to me) is that a lot of her titles look like clickbait, but they really aren't. She promises something out of her content, and then she actually delivers. I'm going to keep returning to her channel because at this point, I treasure any KZbinr that can keep their promises and remain genuine, while still having actual fun doing what they do. ...It's 3:30am so this was long and a little all over the place, but there's my 2 or 3 cents I guess lol

I only get frustrated with clickbait when it feels more like a lie than just a shortened version of a truthful statement or something with buzzwords thrown in. Like you said, there are creators I watch regardless of what their titles are, and even if the video isn't exactly as I expected from the title, I still enjoy seeing it and feel generally entertained. And that's all a video needs to do, really.

You got it 100% right. For me as soon as I see that you’ve posted a new video I click on it straight away regardless of what it’s about or what you’ve titled it. You’re on of my favourite youtubers because you make me laugh more than any other KZbinr does and as a bonus you’re videos are honest depictions of what life as KZbinr is like. I’ve never come across a KZbinr more honest as you and to me that is refreshing.

The thing that gets me about clickbait is how in the video they discuss the click bait they will put in the title, to act as tho it's not clickbait because it's featured. Sounds confusing but because the topic is vaguely mentioned fit 2 seconds then they can say the whole *not clickbait*. It basically shows who's hungry for the money and who actually wants to give back to the loyal fans who will watch whatever despite the title.

I think click bait is tricky on KZbin, I’m fed up of seeing youtubers like jake Paul and rice build there channel off of it, but tbh I think it’s funny if youtubers like yourself use it ironically or at least acknowledge they use it. That’s why I respect you as a youtuber because you’re so honest with your opinion which is rare nowadays

I genuinely just watch the videos of youtubers as I like them, whatever the title is about as I enjoy watching the youtuber no matter the subject of the video. Click bait is blind advertising, advertising to get views without actually begging for them. Great video

The problem is that such a large portion of the audience on youtube are little kids, who get pulled in by clickbait so easily. So the question is do you want an audience of 10 year olds, like Ricegum and other less successful clickbait youtubers, or do you want a more mature audience who actually care about your content and don't just watch your videos to see your hot "girl friend".

The idea of media, as you quite rightly said, is to bring attention to a topic and for the creator to earn add sense money in their own regard. Everyone's happy. Naturally, creators noticed (be it traditional media or KZbin) the more shocking the title the more attention it gets. It only makes sense that in the end they will lie in the title to gain more attention. As everyone does it, you can't really not clickbait for fear of being left in the dust by those who are. It shouldn't be viewed as an innately negative thing, moreso something that can be utilised positively with the correct creator, and it can be used cleverly and tactfully in order to gain attention but not completely lie. But abusing clickbait by means of making a quick buck out of tragedies, disabilities, or otherwise is simply wrong and is pushing KZbin in the wrong direction. So to conclude clickbait, like most things, is a good thing when used in moderation and with some class and finesse, but when abused can end up ruining a platform. For comparison, pranks did a similar thing. Scaring my girlfriend pranks were were pranks started, and the more shocking the prank the more views, so naturally people started doing more intense pranks and then fake pranks were doing the rounds *shooting my best friend prank ffs* and suddenly unless your doing some recreation of 9/11 prank you can't get any views. So people had to change content or fake it to make it. Hence the reason the shitty "prank" channels are pretty much dead. Peace

I feel like the creators whose click bait is constantly a stretch ( i.e. a line or occurrence from one sentence or moment from a 40 minute video) are not the creators who strive to build a committed audience. I've been watching youtube evolve since it came into existence and I get really annoyed when creators that I once liked feed into this trend. You don't, but a lot of people on here who do this for a living do very much abuse it. I also design advertisements for a living so I 100% understand effective marketing and why it's important to successfully run/grow your business, but it's almost along the same lines as people who put out shit products often just for sales (even though they aren't truly passionate about creating said products). Idk...just my thoughts. It's also kind of annoying because I want to start creating and sharing my own content soon, but the thought of having to stretch and come up with ridiculous titles for every video is off-putting. This is why I appreciate your channel...you make good content but also stay true to who you are as a creator and don't play into the fad it all.

Clickbait is heavily reliant on the user now rather than completely down to the creator. When clickbait first came around on KZbin it served its purpose of fooling people into watching something that isn't as described and so it was objectively 'clickbait' - now that clickbait is a common term in the English language, it is subjective, there's no longer 'clickbait' that isn't completely obvious to some, and so it relies on the viewer to interpret in one of three ways: 1. The original 'I think this is something but it turns out to be something else, I have been clickbaited 2. 'This is obviously clickbait, I'm not going to watch it' 3. 'This is obviously clickbait, but I'm intrigued as to what it actually is so I'll watch it'

What I don’t like is people clickbaiting that pretty much has nothing to do with the actual subject. For example I see so many challenges that are fairly entertaining which has the challenge in the title but turns out it is a 9 minute blog and a 1 min challenge

i mean, in one sense clickbait is the thing keeping youtube together. in extremes, its pretty shitty, but in moderation it's not only a big thing keeping channels alive, but it aids viewers because we click on them because we see it may interest us. if there wasnt any kind of clickbait, most of us wouldnt know many of our favourite channels. even in many cases, videos without clickbait are worse than videos with in the way they are created

To be honest I'm going to watch the KZbinrs I like .. ie like you! ;) regardless of what the title of the video is. I'm obsessed with Helen Anderson, her titles are typically very simple, but I love her videos so I watch them. A lot of KZbinrs use clickbait titles because of course they want people to watch their videos (we don't put content up for shits and giggles), and for a lot of them that's how they make their living. As long as the content is actually good and it's not just an exciting title with shit content, I don't seem the harm in it. I think we almost come to expect it now. With the way KZbin is at the moment, you're lucky if your videos come up in a large percentage of your subscribers feeds. I'm sure this has upped the clickbait titles as well. Personally I don't really give a toss what the title is. I see a KZbinr I like uploaded a video, I watch it! Simple. As for suggested videos, if the thumbnail looks interesting and the title, I'll watch it. If I start watching it and it's shit .. I stop! :) x

The clickbait I hate is the type of articles that use an image not in the article, or has stories where each is spread out over several pages. When it comes to videos however, it doesn't really bother me. The people I follow don't tend to use clickbait type of titles, so it doesn't affect me.

I agree with you. Clickbait is fine as it's a way of advertising. Loads of websites do it, especially shitty articles on Facebook. It's only wrong when you say one thing, and it doesn't happen/isn't shown. For example, I read an article saying that Disney whitewashed Pinocchio. I was interested in the optioning and how it was whitewashed, clicked on it, and it didn't even mention whitewashing. Just complained about how brutal the original story is and the fact that Disney changed the story to make it light-hearted. Didn't even go into why Disney changed it, ie consumerism. That kind of clickbait is bad, when it outright lies. But if the truth is bent so that it tricks people into assuming, I see that as manipulation but it's not harmful, so it's fine.

The kind of clickbait differs, like jack said. For example, the kind of clickbait the Paul brothers use is like a perfume advertisement: it starts with hot ladies and sexy men, and then at the end shows what the advertisement was really for; the perfume itself.

I feel the Casey Neistat reasoning is a pretty solid one- "The thumbnail should be intriguing but not misleading." I this case "My girlfriend cheated on me" is pretty intriguing and also leads the viewer to click on a video 95% related to the title. In Ricegums video he has totally mislead viewers to believe that the girl in his video is his current relationship with a GIRL/FEMALE which as we know is 0% true.

compared to the other issues in the world, clickbait doesn't even make the top 1 million, however I think the thing people hate most about clickbait is the dishonesty so in actual fact it isn't the fact people waste a few minutes of their day on a video they dint expect to see, its the concept, the fact that someone they idolise and look up to has essentially lied to them for monetary gain, which raises the question in their mind, is is this person really a role model when they're lying to me? how can i look up to his person? clickbait is like stealing 20p from your mum, as yeah it's only 20p but she's your mum, she's essentially made you what you are and you repay her by stealing from her? It's all about the concept.
